Title: To be or not to be.... Window tint or not....
Post by: Laszlo on January 06, 2021, 11:43:25 AM
Hi everyone  !
I'm repainting my modified Fe, all the windows is out at the moment.
I just removed the 20 years old tint.
I'm wondering anyone used the clear (UV and  heat  resistant) film. If yes worth to do it ?
What your opinion using the normal (darker) tint on the already modified FE . Don't forget the Queensland sun. 😰

Cheers: Laszlo

Ask and ye shall receive, Laszlo!

Here's exactly what you asked for: a maroon FE with tinted windows.

I done a bit of homework  about the clear tint.
Uv reduction can be good,  but the heat reduction maximum 16 % . The coloured  film can reduce the heat up to 85%

So I still has to be decide  tint or no tint......

85% ?

What does that actually mean?

I would assume it means that if the ambient temp is 35º, and the temperature in the locked car is 50º, then the film cuts the 15º difference by 85%, meaning it would only be 37º in the car. But then there's those weasel words "up to"...

Look it's your car, you do what you want, but personally I think the tinting on "Rosie" looks awful, and I have my doubts it makes that much difference, even in Queensland. I have seen tinting on obviously modified cars (which Rosie was not), and it has looked okay. I think it's the tint against the cream roof on Rosie that turns me off.

Bottom line, if you're going to drive your FE in the baking sun, you'd do it with the windows down, cowl vent open, and the quarters turned inside out to give you as much draft as you can get when moving.  :)

Hi Laszlo,
Look under members completed FC/FE projects and Injected V8 FC (page 12). I had all my windows tinted including the rear windscreen whilst they were out of the car. Not sure of the tint or heat rating. Looks ok and have had no issues.

G'day RET !

About the "up to 85%"  I just believed what I was reading on one of the website. Since I done a bit more research on the subject I found it if you park your car windows up under the sun for hours and hours the temperature will be a same no matter tint or not.
If you have a tint the temperature will rise slower but at the end you still can cook an egg inside the car......

My Fe is not a two tone like Rosie and a bit different colour  too. 1994 Honda Prelude metallic bordeaux red, with a Detroit flash. If I learn how to upload photos I will post a few.
If I decide to tint the windows I definitely  will go with the darkest shade off black. "If a goose, better be fat !" like the old Hungarian saying. I just have to explain the cops I always driving front windows down in sunny Queensland....
Thanks for your opinion
Laszlo

G'day Brett !

I had a look your car : looks good !
Sounds like ok to tint the windows when they out from the car.
I guess you just have to be extra careful when you are putting the tinted glass back not to scratch them.

All the doors an glass back on the car after painting. All the windows cleaned up nicely.
I think I like it better without the tint.

Just an other thought on the tinting. The blue Fc ute we bought for my son Dean about 4 weeks ago had a blue (!) tint on it. Yes, a blue ute with a blue tint.  We cleaned off, looks lot better....

Tinting simply polarises the light getting into the cab. Darkening the tint may make you feel better, but won't help with rising internal temp. "2/80 air".. is what we used back in the day.
         [ 2 windows down....2 vents wide open & sit on 80 mph ;)] Kevin.

You right Kevin, specially with the 80 mph  ;D
Lucky the Fc ute has an aircon in it,  so we can seat on the speed limit..... :)

Hi Laszlo. The only way we got to 80mph was downhill in angel gear. Kevin.

Kevin, my Fe has a V8 Chevy. I done 98 mph (on a private flat road :)
My son Fc has a 3.8 Supercharged V6,  we didn't try it over 75 mph....

Laszlo

Ps : Back in the good old days, when I still had a grey in the Fe I was hitting the 80 mph mark with a milde cam and twin Stromberg ( and a bit of tailwind  :)
