Title: Diffs
Post by: Snoop on November 22, 2019, 10:37:49 AM
Hi Guys and Girls
Thinking of changing diff centre to 3. 36 plenty of diffs for sale but not sure if I have a course spline or fine spline diff n axles! Is there any way to identify what I’m running without popping an axle out?
Also pretty sure a eh, hr, hd diff will bolt straight in without changing uni connections
Any advice appreciate.

Most likely coarse spline snoop, unless you've fitted some thing fancy. Stock is coarse spline.

Original diff flange differs to EH on but the tailshaft flange is the same so just fit later uni joint and you'll need the u bolts which attach to diff flange.

Snoop,

Clay's pretty much covered it.  FE/FCs have coarse-spline axles.

If the diff casting takes short bolts all the way around, it'll be a coarse-spline diff, and will suit FE/FC.

Any 3.36 from EH right through to HG will be suitable.  I have no experience of HQ-onwards to guide you though.

Most LC LJ are coarse spline too. Think XU1 May be the exemption. Very rare now so not likely. Like Rob I’ve no clue on HQ on.

The banjo diffs were course spline through to early HZ (6 cylinder). The fine spline banjos were LJ XU1, LH/LX/HQ-HZ V8s and late HZ 6 cylinder.

Thanks so much for all the info guys , all of the diffs I’ve seen advertised are course spline and I didn’t know that fine spline were so rare. Thought it might have been luck of the draw what you actually have installed from factory.
Thought I’d try a 3.36 ratio after reading some threads on the subject of diff ratios with quite a few agreeing that this is an ideal ratio.
Thanks Again

To my knowledge fine spline Banjos began in large Holdens around early HX around late 1976 (LX also at around the same time). Late LJ XU1s and 5.0 LH/LX also had them. 4.2 V8 LH/LX had course spline.

HQ-HZ V8 & all One-Tonners had large Salisbury diffs with 28-spline axles.

Think you will find the ideal ratio for a stock fc would be 3.55 .cheers Steve . ;)

Unless you're running interstate or stupidly low profile tyres on stock rims

. . . and of both I am guilty.  A 3.55 works very well in my stock Humpy, and I have a 3.36 in my FC.
