Title: Manual box behind a grey
Post by: black57 on November 19, 2018, 01:29:14 PM
Hi all,

Not sure if there is a thread on this. I had a look but couldn't find anything.
I would like to keep my 3 spd shifter on the column, but want to run a box that has synchro first. Probably a red 3 spd.
Is there a simple solution?
Should I be looking to some other box?
Either way, what components would I need to make the change?

Thanks.
Pinky

Just to add to the confusion ,I tool a look at the link and …..well back in the early fifties Hillmans had similar linkage on the box and they operated the gearchange by using 2 heavy cables . I was going to utilise this idea but with a steel outer and cable inner from firewall bracket to bellhousing . Just another option .

Hi Keith, yes you did.
My apologies, to be honest I forgot I posted that a few days earlier. Thought I had started the post and never uploaded it.
Thank you for the follow up.

Interesting concept HSV001.

Pinky.

If you're going to fit a synchro 3 speed and keep the column sifter, I reckon you could go an Aussie 4 speed with your column shift and have a secondary gearstick on the floor for reverse. All four forward gears should work off the column. It will change the shift pattern though.

Some of us may remember the twin stick shifter that was available for Aussie 4 speeds in the early 80's, these used a separate (and smaller) stick for reverse.

Very interesting! I actually had a 4 spd with separate reverse in an LH Torana for a while.
