Is it a conversion harness? What wiring did you end up with?

Most snap on readers are OBD2. VR V6 is ALDL (or crudely sometimes called OBD1). Your reader won't pick it up.
BUT if you have a warning light you can bridge pins 5&6 to get the warning light to flash in a series of blinks to give error code numbers

I ended up using the harness that came in the kit with the body control module. I am not to good at this techno stuff.

Hi mate I would have said exactly what NES did best way is to bridge the terminals as stated on the diagnostic plug if you have a commodore manual it will give you a list of the codes and you want it to flash 12 that means everything is ok

not sure which scan tool my mechanic is using. Being a mechanic I hope he knows what he is doing. I have a transmission leak atm so wont fire up again until this is fixed.

Well I'd hope he knows. Otherwise it'll be a loose wire on the port which is unlikely?

You could buy a cheap ALDL scanner and see if it works when on accessories...
