So, don't hold back.    What's the story that goes with this one.

Post by: customholden on December 03, 2010, 10:10:33 PM
was going to put a 350 chev in her but i have found out it would not be legal in Qld so i am going to use my Rb30 instead and look at putting a rb25 head on the rb30 block and turbo it. I will be doing all the work myself except for the retriming of the seats and door trims. I am going to start stripping it down in the morning.

Good to see that you are getting your teeth into it. I can see why you want to go the route of fabricating a new chassis, there is certainly a fair bit of tin worm in there. Keep us posted on your progress :)

Good luck with it

i have pulled all the interior out and cleaned up whats left, wich is very little metal and all rust. by the time i cut out all the rust the will be No floor, No sills, half a front subframe, even half the rear left door will be missing. I have desided it is too far gone to just fix the rust and modify but i will have to re fabicate and reengineer the car as a hot rod. i will buy new outter skins for the sills and doors that need replacing. and i will be fabricating my own inner sills and chassis kit to fit a new sheet metal floor (keeping the original bench seat mounts to refit the benchy. I will be shortening a commodore diff from a vn to vs which i am still looking for a full doner car to buy. Will use the same brakes and hubs on the front from the doner car and make my own hot rod style front and rear end. running airbags all round and lowering the body 50mm over the standard suspension height so once bags are lowered the sill will be as low to the ground as possible (if not on the deck). i have realist that while i will be going as refabing the chassis and suspension i might as well go the whole hog and do the V8 instead of the Rb30. i will deside later if i use the 350 chev or twin turbo my 253. but it will now be V8 not a street 6. i will find a less rust old holden for the street 6 rb30 motor and make it a daily driver. missus wants an EH

sounds like yer gunna be very busy. may as well make a full chassis as u want to and go full fibreglass panels  ;D make it a light v8 runner for the strip! I wouldn't bother twin turbo'ing a 253 though, i may as well turbo the rb30 and it would shit all over the 253 for durability  ;)

Floor , fuel tank, handbrake , wiring etc. This is a link to Pedo's build and can give you some idea's of what is possible. Hopefuuly the page will take you to the floor replacement.

i had a play around with the two wagons on the weekend and has desided to use the whole commodore car and fit my FC to the commodore. the only mod plate i will need is for the front bench seat when i remove the buckets.

I reckon blend the rear of the commo guards into the FC guards and get the wheel sitting centred in the FC guard to start.

doesnt this mean you should really be on a commodore forum lol. You have given me crazy ideas that I only think of for like 2 minutes when i am pissed, but you are serious???  ;D

Now u got me thinking all sorts of crazy shit. perhaps I should buy a vl and tack on the fc panels cos i have an rb30 engine too! the roof would be the main issue.  ???

There have been forum members that have put Commodore floor pans into an FC, I wonder is it at all possible to effectively cut the Commodore body off, leaving the floor pan and subframe etc and grafting the FC wagon body onto the floor and subframe of the Commodore.

Just a thought

There was an guy that did the same thing with an FJ a couple of years ago, although I didn't see the end result.... not even sure where the site was now. Am pretty sure that he had to make the whole of the car wider to accommodate the chassis of he commodore that he used.

realisticly tho i cant see it happening windows door jams width height shape  everything is different

that fc wagon is a very very sad old girl evrything looks shagged or rusty.

but prove me wrong many have i think i would cut my losses and find a half decent wagon shell or car and use the old girl as a donor. :-\

the front curve of the fc bonnet is exactly the same as a commodore. i have check this with fc on top of the commodore. just for a laugh. but i like what i sore.  this mod has been done before using a ek and a vn commodore sedan.(on the fbek forum) i like it originally but after closer looks, i think it would be better with the FC and not a sedan..and has been done with a fj to vr sedan on the old Holden forum not completed that i know of, and just didn't look right from side on. i have spoken to a lot of people about the mod. I agree it is a way out there modification. More people would prefer to put the commodore gear into a fc then  to put a fc onto a commodore, but there is more work and engineering to put all the gear in a fc the put the shell onto a commodore and mod is classed as a commodore with a body kit. but when you drive both cars the fc may not have power steering, aircon and a comfortable ride BUT will have a lot more power then the original and look FC cool. my plan is to have the look of a FC Cool car( which i love). it was my first car and always wanted and other. i have had fx Ute as well but still love the FC. I like the handling of the commodore, the power and the reliability and fuel eco of the v6 commodore but i DONOT like the look..

With putting the FC shell onto the commodore i hope to get the Cool Look of my favorite Holden the FC. but the drivabilty of a more modern commodore. i am planning on trying to make the interior to look like the FC as well. I will get the seats changed to the double bench seat, using the bench seat out of a taxi or Ute and collum shift and get the re-trimmed in the FC tuck and roll look. i will look at changing whole fc steel dash  and flat door trims to match later.

I know it will take a lot of time but for now i am going to do the out side and get it regoed. plan for Sept this year.then consentrate on the interior. It will be a Cool daily driver family car.

i have almost decided to abort doing too much to mine and do a stocky but very quality resto using just hr front end and a decent rack and brakes etc. everything standard.

Commodores dont handle that great anyway, so it would be cheaper to have 2 cars, a safe original cruiser, but also have a decent jap sportier car that actually goes fats and turns corners without all the dramas.

Ive only had satisfaction in handling from the latest VE out of all the commodores. I currently have a fg falcon g6, not bad had 2 ve's before that, in 3 weeks I will be getting the ve sportswagen sv6. Should be a nice ride. I have plenty of time to decide while i am doing the body work. I am always in 2 minds, but I think I wanna have something prehistoric but just enough mods to pull her up so I dont run up the ass of the hotrodders on downhill runs at club meetings  :D

Good on ya customholden for both thinking outside the box and havin a crack at it  ;).
Doesnt matter what you do, you'll always come across nay sayers in life, and if we all listened to 'em, life wouldn't be worth living!
So what if ya build doesn't come to fruition, it's yours and so long as you have fun playing with it, well in my books that's the main thing  :).
Now I got a similar build on the back burner been happening for a while, ( not even sure it will continue in same direction yet ) but haven't said a thing about it as, although there is so much GREAT WONDEROUS HELPFUL PEOPLE and INFO in here (which is truly a credit), some people are very quick to jump on the negativity bandwagon and seem to enjoy dampening others creative spirits.
Anyway customholden, this is the way I went, got a running VN commodore (drove it for 2 weeks till rego ran out  :D) for $150, then cut the thing to pieces  ;D. Cut it down so I had all the front still with motor in it and floor pan, then put FC sedan shell over top. Wasn't bloody easy by myself that's for sure, but at moment all is sitting as it should, just recently took motor out so I can work out next plan of attack for matching together the firewalls. I have some pics on my phone, but have updated my pc & now have to get phone software working so I can get the pics on here, will put them on soon as I can for you to see.
Here's the only pic I have at moment on my pc of what I did to the VN.
By the way, for those people who think it's a sin for what I've done to the FC, you don't realise just how BADLY RUSTED this body was, so way I see it I'm saving it through organ donation  ;D :P.
Cheers all,
Moon.

Will take a few more shots of project and post 'em up soon,

Well done both of you - luv recycling!!  If we didn't like hot rods it would never happen - keep going

I will probably get drawn and quartered for adding this picture of a single spinner F##rd recycled over a Toyota, but it shows how people do think out side of the square and how the finished product can be a great job. This is a local Tasmanian vehicle.

Hey Weddo, cool pic i have seen a few done like that in the US and thats is my what i had in mind while doing mine.

Hey Moon, i like the way you think. nice work on your build, a bit different to everyone else. i found a lot of good info on all the builds on this forum and other forums and they will always help you out with info, even if they do like you build they still respect it.

I am working on the rear guards for mine this weekend. got one side on today. i will do the other side and tailgate tommorrow.

Hey Customholden, the rear looks great! The front needs a new radius on the guard lip but should work out OK. Are you going to put FC door handles on or leave as is?

Can you post the ID plate and chassis number off the FC for my collection please.

regards  Ken

Thanks for the update pics. It is coming along well.
I think Ken's idea of putting FC door handles on is worth considering.
Is there a flap to go on where the fuel filler is?

Cheers
Paul

i know the front guards aren't the standard fc wheel arch but when you have to extend the front half 150mm it was the easyest way and i am hoping that once i get the front bar on it won 't look as bad and look more like a 50's merc style guard

Cheers Tony

Tony sorry about the delay in getting back to you but my home computer had a coranary(heart attack) so went and bought a laptop and had to try and transfer all items out of the old one. Anyhow I recieved the hood bows about a week ago and are verry happy with them.   Thanx for doing that for me.  ;D             Grubby.

LUV YOR WORK BUDDY! HOW ABOUT SOME UPDATES & KEEP IT GOIN,  GAZ. 8)

project had been put on hold when my drive car broke the radiator and had a slipping gearbox. i use the raditor and gearbox out of this project to get the drive car going again. now i am wrecking that drive car and putting all the good bit back into this project. i have swaped over the brand new radiator, gearbox, rear nolthene suspension bushes and lowered king springs. now i am working on the front end, have to swap the k frames ,front springs, steering rack( that doesn't leak) and bushes into this wagon.
