Title: FE sedan
Post by: FCRB26 on July 28, 2010, 04:20:55 PM
I have finally winged it and found a sheded FE sedan no rust has had a full re build at some stage

The photo does not do it justice its covered in red dust from that storm.
Found it under a car port near my home.

It has every nasco option i can think of.
Taxi rail, heater, parcel shelf, nasco mud flaps, rain deflectors, vaccum washer bottle, scuff plates, radio, rubber mats, spats, rear venetians,
New king springs. shocks. new exhaust, recod motor
came with fats as well with new yokohama tyres extractors heaps of other bits.
Took it for a lap brakes are a bit sticky ran like a dream with fresh fuel.
the only mods are electric wipers and booster.
Did have number plates FE138 but he handed them in (nob)
Paint is pretty good acrylic chrome is excellent.(http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/ad278/fchoon/28072010295.jpg)

Very very happy shame the wife doesnt share my happines.

Good to see you finally got the old girl Pete and she's in even better nick than I expected, hard to come by cars in that good a condition with all the accessorys nowadays, I agree with you Jase there should be a smiley face type of symbol for jealousy coz I'd be using it right now, great score 8) 8).

Wow, now I am twice as jealous.
That car has had a nice rebuild at some stage.
Can't understand how someone can spend that much attention on a car and then just leave it parked to gather dust.
1 persons loss is your gain.

Post by: FCRB26 on August 03, 2010, 07:10:00 PM
would like some history but it was last regod with police numbers so weather it has had a front end swap who knows.

All the shocks look brand new no marks or even tar on them front springs still have king springs sticker on them exhaaust has no dicoloration tip looks like it was put on last week.
The engine bay i started cleaning it today has had VH40 fitted and the harness fiddled with has had a valve lube bottle hooked up.
Either the oil bath air cleaner is NOS or been fully recod has a new sticker on it and very shiny clean paint.

Am trying to get time to do brakes next week.

Took it for a hot lap down the road yesterday

i should have stayed in the shed pulled up about 10 ks down the back road of the mine centre of rusty radiator cap blew off letting coolant go everywehere smoke pouring from front brake so a very slow trip back to the workshop and a few things to fix.

I am going to remove all wheel cylinders and have them re sleeved in stainless.
sorted radiator cap out today.

Like all the other comments it is a great find.

Obviously gives you a buzz to think that all it needed was some TLC to bring it back to life.

Well done

I'll start by saying I know very little about paint.
I was under the impression that these cars were painted in acrylic lacquer. If so, I bought some Royal Marine about 9 months ago.

Beautiful car. Truly sorry to hear about the damage.

Hi Dean

F90 simmons 16 X 7 running cheap arse blue streak or something they are 205 45 16 16s are a bastard of a tyre i have a set of new245 50 16 and i also have 225 50 16,s and they are all too  wide cos of the rim offset.
I have a full set of 215 55 16 and they are too tall  so i have 3 spare sets of tyres.

205/50/16,s would be perfect but not an option on the day.

Pete

nice.
shortening the banjo at home i love it.....
how did ya do the axles?
angle grinder haha?
just did my first  9 inch for our topolino altered.
love it when people ask "who shortened it?"

Title: Re: FE sedan
Post by: FCRB26 on March 26, 2012, 07:55:57 PM
I do a fair bit of that sort of stuff machined the cut ends and chammfered in the lathe.
tig welded ends back on they were cut 100mm in so its just on the outside of the u bolt.
axles are 10mm shorten 1mm cut off wheel
there was enough spline to not have to respline.
No noises or vibrations very happy and a first for a holden no diff leaks.

Title: Re: FE sedan
Post by: waynos on March 26, 2012, 09:04:26 PM
haha
the ol' 1 mm cut off wheel......
thats what i thought.
people say you cant do that sort of thing,
really ya arent changing the grain structure much at all
i'm a fabricator i really worry about all these technicalities,
at the end of the day its about safety hey,
and the know alls tellin you "ya cant do that"
can get stuffed in my opinion..............
awesome mate
love some ingenuity

Title: Re: FE sedan
Post by: FCRB26 on November 26, 2012, 05:15:09 AM
They are the ones from turkey.
The first one took a bit of stuffing around as the rims have tubes so i pulled the valve out
And clamped one edge of the tyre down to my work bench sit the insert around the edge and use the palm of your hand to slap the insert back under the bead . I also used meguirs clear tyre shine it made it slippery and easy to insert.
This stuff also cleans the white to a beutiful finish..

I had a brain storm after a friends EH use to have one of those liquid nitrogen old school air con things .

Im really struggling shaping the front i have thrown 5 test ones out...

A carton of beer and some shed time tommorow and i might have something i like.
I have a new clutch arrive, new water pump, 1  member has sent me a alloy rocker cover i got 4 litres of dark blue 2K to paint motor box and detail the rocker cover and intake.
Ordered some heat proof KBS coatings clear coat so i can bead blast the intake and thinking of doing the rocker cover and clearing it ?
I hate mis matching polished and bead blasted easy to keep clean.

This looks good Pete.  Do you have to modify the back of the air pump for the car by to fit or make a pipe that loops back?

Yeah it will do but when i did the EH with one on it i saved all the drawings in the water jet so its easy to cut a new one.
I use the original intake and modify both ends.

I tried it on its side by the time it clears the headers its the exact same footprint.

Battery tray needs removing generator needs changing and regultaor .
It clears the bonnet hinge with a dellorto.

really dont want to muck up the reliability of the old girl it runs so sweet and never misses a beat .
But a supercharger whine would be nice...

You can buy a cd with a pre-recorded supercharger whine on it. Play it in the FE when you're driving her - problem solved  ;)

Getting excited to tow the van.
So i found my annoying noise which i suspected NES gave me a diff with original wornout wheel bearings how dare he...

So i replaced the rear wheel bearings
replaced front and rear unis
oil change
gearbox oil changed
The linkage rods are very worn so repaired them
tidied up an old tow bar  cut a new plug mount as per original
made a new tongue on the waterjet and fitted a shackle mount thingo as i couldnt get any second hand pig tail looking hitches.
Fitted crush tubes into the body welded top and bottom (photo before welded)

The semaphore blinkers on the FE FC's make the blinkers go haywire!!!! good luck with it all! I was told you have to run a fresh line to both to get them to bypass the semaphore set up , otherwise your blinkers are stop lights !!

The vintage caravan forums should have diagrams for the FE/FC setup showing where to tap in & anything else required to overcome issues with the combined blinkers & brake circuit.

Just found this

Hi Brendan.

There are 2 solutions to your problem.

The simplest, I think, would be to convert to the late FC set-up of amber rear blinkers. Sure you have to change the lenses, & some like the 50's look of the red rear blinkers, but you don't have to run any new wires.

To do this, you utilise the currently unused reverse light wire for the brake lights & use the old brake light wires for the new amber blinker lights. Under the dash, attach the  other end of this reverse light wire to the brake light switch & that's it. It's then simple to wire up the trailer socket, same as a late model car (in the boot).

If you currently use the white lenses as reversing lights, attach the reverse light wire from the reverse switch,  under the dash to the connector where the brake lights were connected to.

The alternate plan, if you wish to stay with the red rear blinkers is to run 3 new wires from the dash to the boot area.

1 wire from the brake switch for the trailer's brake lights.
2 wires from the blinker switch (LH & RH) for the trailer's blinkers.

You could, if you wanted to, run the 5 core trailer wire all the way to the dash to reduce the number of connections.

Hope this helps.

Dr Terry.

I allready have the pointed caddilac style lenses in amber to fit.
i had all intentions of changing to a conventional blinker set up .
As there a lot of stupid people around our area that just cannot get their head around a brake light flashing.

I had the pair bolted to a plate to keep thwm steady while I de dagged them so I never noticed the face they would have never sealed.
So that then put the inlet manifold out had to mill 3.5mm off it too.

I seen them Jim they are pretty.
Was going that way but thought i would just set it all up and tig the arms to the rod but may not be able to as i have to see if i can remove the rod with the arms welded on.
Might run the old set up to get me going first then go down the hex bar route.
I used braided lines for the heater and plan on doing the same as yours in black for the fuel.

came up with this set up this morning
milled the round bar with a flat on it then cut on the waterjet new arms from 3mm stainless.
Then i cut from 10mm s/s a piece with a D cut into it i will drill and tap the lump on the back and put a grub screw into it. its very snug fit atm ayway.
then i tig the 3mm to the 10mm at the desired angle solid as a rock then.

My mistake was trying to get the linkages to go on the outside but i couldnt get the travel i needed. so after seeing jims on the inside i copied that now everything works fine and i use original throttle set up just have to make a new shorter linkage rod.

I need to shorten the rod .
I asked on the grey motor page the best way to lock it all in but my mate spammed the page.
Do I put a spring on the rod between the front throttle link and rose joint and put a washer and split pin on the end that way its always locked in place.

Thanks Pete, when I pull it down I can check it all out and see what has been done. I doubt if it has been ported and polished or had the flywheel lightened and balanced,so if I can,
the plan is to get larger valves, double springs and hardened seats as well as port and polish. Spoken with Clive Cams in Melbourne, so The cam will be similar to yours,I'd like to weigh the pistons & rods as well as a few other things Weddo has suggested to aid in better oil flow.
Jim

Title: Re:

A crank, flywheel, balancer, piston and rod balance is $240 in Melb and worth it.  Also look at some stiffer single springs rather then doubles, cheaper and less stress.  If you need the head dine talk to Eddie at HSD he is the best and price is OK aswell but you can gatentee it will be amazing.

Also polishing is no good, you want the ports rough to aid atomization of the fuel, helps it burn better so never polish inside the inlet ports or inlet manifolds.

Well what can i say.
I learnt a valuable lesson about buying a "fully recod" engine
Should have just built one myself to save the heartache and let alone the money wasted.
After having a fully recod ebay stromberg drop the vent tube into the engine i have had enough.
This is the 2nd "fully recod" carb to fail
Upon stripping the engine we found the below list of problems.
so i have ordered all the parts to put fuel injection onto the new engine.
Haltech computer , custom throttle bodys, LS injectors
MOB race engines which are 5 minutes from home have just opened up he seems extremelly knowledgable with greys. He has given me a hand to rebuild the old girl doing all the machining work what we found was laughable the engine was junk in the end all i saved was the pistons and block and head.
also upon stripping the engine bay i found some rust so a quick re build of the subframe and lower sill section was neccesary.
Yeah i wasnt going to touch it but have had issues with the generator and the engine bays a mess so i have ordered  a tiny alternator and smoothed out the engine bay to make her look pretty again.
This is just a prevenative build to stop the rust hopefully get it back together sooner rather than later so i can start assembling the ute.

specs on the motor ..
Re-bored and honed to 3 1/8 (standard bore)
Engine block surfaced & ground  (NOT surface ground )
Crankshaft re-ground 20/20 - Complete engine balance ((crank was 30 thou under with big grooves so in the bin it went NOT balanced)
Camshaft re-ground 25/65 mild - Flywheel lightened machined & balanced (Camshaft overground had allready started wearing bad)
(Main cap bolts on crank were loose mitre ten spring washers had split fell into sump) crazy
New gudgeon pins fitted to rods
Cylinder head port & polished, fitted with oversize valves & Speco inserts (ported no new inserts fitted)
Now suits Unleaded Petrol ( ULP )
Rockers re-bushed & reamed
 NewPiston & Rings
Camshaft bearings, Conrod bearings & Main bearing
Timing Gears & Harmonic Balancer (Supposed alloy timing gears was a damaged old fibre one

It had some pitting but came up pretty sweet looks 100 percent on the old one.
I think doing engine and engine bay blue all smoothed out will make it pop they look so much better painted a light colour cos they are so small..
trying to de clutter the engine bay so its ultra clean..

Pete,

Impressive work..

Just wondering how the coils are fired.. obviously the crank trigger provides the signal but do you need to run some sort of ECU?

Am thinking of doing this down the track to the 1UZFE with an after market ECU.

Cheers
Ed

Looks good Pete, just a suggestion on the colour of the front of the subframe. The radiator side panels look better black - this highlights the chrome on the grille. Painted side panels tend to wash out the chrome. When I painted the van (light blue) I left the front in colour, but then painted it black later.

Re assembling control arms the rubbers to stop the grease were shagged so instead of having to buy the kit off rares i ordered some 25mm silicon hose works great.
Also i bought a new sata spray gun with a smaller 1.4mm nozzle to try get an even better finish.
Hopefully engine in on the weekend.

Pete I have same manifold and problem.

If you are in the mood make 2 and I will be happy to pay whatever costs.

I also have problems port matching and thought if you extend the runners ( allowing enough for solid 2mm gasket and about 3mm into ports) through mounting plates to locate into ports the problem might be solved.

Thanks,Gary.

Hmm im having enough trouble racking my brain to make 1 let alone 2  ;D

Im averaging 1 or 2hrs of a night or at 3am before work to get it done.
I reckon i have the port matching solved so 40mm throttle bodys. 38mm runners giving me 34.8 ID so i will chamfer outside mounting plate 2.6mm and im thinking of machining up a cone that slips into the original groove on the head and machining a rebate into the intake flange.
Havent got that far.

I mocked up my rare REPCO efi manifold last night.
So next big problem will be injectors im steering away from the XR6 turbo ones to stumpy little LS ones and im not going to use the billet fuel rail i bought in favour of a factory style LS fuel rail in stainless as i can get it heaps small and run a factory efi pressure reg so it looks less modern.
I have gone with stainless for the manifold but will ceramic coat to make it all look period kinda..

Excuse the cable ties i didnt have any long bolts

Hey Pete I can seeeee yooooooooo Yeah he's gotta at least get ONE finished soon hahahahahha

Why do you think i dont sleep at night the only car thats driving is the army jeep and look how that ended up big engine bay fire charging battery and lithium jump pack was still on it without me seeing it. had lunch came back over to a decent fire.
so all day was wasted re wiring engine bay new leads new rotor and cap re do all terminals clean alternator need to repaint a few things.. >:(

so the Ute will be rolling this week and hopefully get linkages and injectors done on the FE this week coming.

I have my eye on 1 complete..

Snuck out the shed and finished fuel rail and mounts also finished injector ports into the manifold.
Everything seems to clear the injector wiring will clear.
The tps sensor will clear.
Will have to relocate throttle arm return spring is the only set back.

Jeez Pete, I wish I had half your talent!! the whole setup looks fantastic. The roller rockers look like they were always there, can't wait to see the finished product. What is the capacity of the fuel tank?the FE is looking almost as cool as the FC. All you have to do now i find a couple more FE's and you will have a full set of both.

Been a few years since I frequented this place, but the first thing I see is that engine bay, bloody hell it was like seeing a naked lady for the first time, fuel injected grey is a wet dream come true. Had to go back and read more, you my sir, have class  :D

If you ever feel like making a few more of those set ups, don't be shy to advertise here, I get the feeling there would be many takers

Cheers

Bought the FE home

Slowlly piecing it back together.
A lot better bolting it back together with m6 guard bolts and everything nutserted .

Made 90rwhp in the end but smooth as silk and starts first go cold like a modern car.
Fuel pump is whisper quiet very happy.

Hi All

Nearing the home stretch with the FE

It runs simply Fantastic cannot believe how well it runs stone cold it just runs perfect no coughing no farting.
We had a issue after it came off the dyno it had a noticeable stutter from idle. We thought it may of been to much air getting in.
Turns out it was fuel pressure. i had used a RB25 fuel pressure reg which is 45PSI turns out the LS 6ltr injectors need 58PSI so a quick search on google turns out a RB26DETT regulator is adjustable.
Lucky i am changing the one off the FC sedan for a aftermarket one so changed them out and cranked it up a bit and it is perfect now.
Only drama i have mucked up the tune by increasing fuel pressure so will need a quick clean up on the dyno again.

I have been re assembling panels, Cleaning up the wiring trying to finish it. I have misplaced the tags off the car somewhere  ???

The video attached (if it works ) is 6am in the morning 5 deg to show how well it runs cold. Amazing that a engine almost 70yrs old can run like this.
we made 91RWHP but with the increase in in fuel pressure mark the dyno man thinks it will make more.

Been a while between posts
I have been re assembling the FE slowlly.
We have lots happening at work so not much shed time.
I had to re dyno the car after i increased fuel pressure made 90rwhp so took it for its first drive drove really well very very smooth power transition.
Only 1 glitch it surged going up a hill so can only assume it was because it was low on fuel or the pump sock is too close to the bottom of the swirl pot.
Front end was a pain to align as theres no screws its all m6 nutserted now definetly a lot stronger together as you are not scared of stripping like the screws do.

Hi All

Been in Hiding for a while with work commitments.

Sold the FE regrettably and still not sure why i sold it.
Recentlly had a re tune using TPS and Map mix and it made 98rwhp totally tranformed it.
The new owner has been driving it lots of late getting many kms on it.

Would buy it back in a heart beat.

Whoa, that would've been a big call Pete.  Sorry to hear you regret it, but maybe one day you can get it back?

Thanks for the journey you took us on during the rebuild - it was fascinating and some real outside the box stuff went into this, not to mention the workmanship and detail.  I still refer to this thread for ideas every now and then.

All the best,

John
