Here is a photo update to where it is at. My upgrade includes fitting the V8 and other bits from a VN donor.

I am not sure with the current mods planned as I may need to refit some headrests.

My thoughts are to refit headrests and then make up a cover plate to cover the mounting holes.

What's your thoughts

If it worked before i'd leave it as is, you dont need to change the seats and if the engineer says you need headrest then just refit them.

The subframe and firewall just need a cleanup as both Brake and clutch M'Cyl have leaked and eaten through paintwork.

I have managed to modify the VN wiper motor similar to Brett FCs. I have also had to modify the mounting crank using the VN taper and the original EK mount (??). The reason for this is to give enough depth, through the firewall, to allow the crank rotate without hitting anything due to the shaft on the VN Wiper Motor being about 1 cm shorter. The modified crank increases the distance between the shaft mount and the wiper arm mount to about 15mm. I will get some more photos to show the mod. I would like additional thoughts on how this may be a cost effective option for those seeking the two speed wiper motor option.

Update 2010

I have started the mods firstly with the new transmisson tunnel.

Firstly was the deed of cutting the old tunnel out. That was a little daunting :o :o

Then came the fittiing of the new tunnel which I tec screwwed in as per advice from another post.

Then the job of welding it in. The larger task was to clean up all the old sound proffing on the floor.

I have since started to mount brake booster and have my front end back to mount back in and start sorting the Engine/Transmission position.

Regards Craig

Here are some more progress shots. I have repaired the pax side A pillar, LHF floor as well as manufactured some engine mounts to get the correct height and position at the firewall.

One of the motivators is to get the damn steering wheel on and drive it out of the shed ;D ;D ;D

The pearled wheel is courtesy our friends at Bega. It is a white and cream pearl with the chrome seperator bands. I am really happy with the result. Now I just need to rechrome the horn ring and sort out the steering wheel badge.

Here is my dog Molly who was missing for a week during the QLD Floods. Thank god she is back home ;D ;D ;D

Trial and error has gotten me through the engine mounts. I have slotted the mounts onto the engine to allow me to move the engine forward or back about half an inch. Running Gilmer Drive so will need a little more room

I have also had the VN Diff shortened and looking to connect all brakes etc. in the next few weeks.

Until next time

Just a quick progress report.

I have completed all the underfloor strengthening and have modified the under floor subframe and manufactured a new transmission crossmember.

Also manufactured a new handbrake lever to suit match the VN cable to the original FC Handbrake front cable setup. Now looking to maunfacture new brake lines and fuel lines to suit.

I have also fitted B&M shifter, rear diff, front end and modified steering column.

I will upload some photos shortly.

Very chuffed a my enigneer came over and passed all these mods. I also quizzed him on the engine capacity ruling and for my car all will be OK to fit the 304ci.

Cheers

Craig

Here are some photos of my mods passed by the engineer this week:
Gearbox Chassis mounts. These are made from 65 x 45RHS and have been reinforced with 40x5mm strap with captive nuts welded into place.

I hope you enjoy them.

Well here is some more photos of the handbrake setup as well as the shifter I have fitted.

This setup as you can see is very basic but it does the job.

You will see the handbrake lever on a slight angle downwards so that there is enough clearance for the front cable when it is attached to the lever.

I have used the outer handbrake cable retainers, off the VN, but may need to extend them off the floor about 60mm to give me more room for the tailshaft. Other than that it all fits pretty well.

Just a few shots of the trannie shifter as well.

Have a good week everyone.

Hi Craig,

Thanks for posting progress pics.

Just a question with regard to the chassis rails.

Did you go up through the floor with the rails?

it's certainly a beefy trans mount, not worried about it hanging too low?

I know mine used to be the lowest point of the car.

Cheers

Ed

Title: Re: Here we go again!!!
Post by: FCV08 on May 10, 2011, 09:11:39 AM
Ed

The rails are profile cut to the shape of the underside of the floor. I stitch welded them on utilising a 4 inch weld. They are also butt welded to the front underfloor crossmember and welded and plated at the rear front spring hanger. At the rear they are also capped to seal the top of the rails. Although you cannot see it the kframes are also plated with 3mm plate for strengthening the front end as part of the mod.

Craig

It has been a little while since the last update.

I have since fitted a under dash heater assy, radiator, battery cable, and new alloy fuel tank.

I am avoiding the inevitable wiring like the plague. I will eventually ruin out of other things.

Here are some shots of my work so far.

Modified the radiator support brace.

Along with the grill support panel

Also recessed the front subframe and made up lower radiator support mounts whicxh have the original VN commodore rubber mounts

Boot floor removed and modified floor bracing and sheeting fitted waiting for new tank

Part 2 (too many photos to run all at once  ??? ???)
and here is the new tank all fitted. Thanks goes to a great freind who build this off a set of hand drawn plans. Not bad !!

The two slots at the rear are for white LED lights strips as reversing lights

Enough room to run the exhaust down both sides

Capacity works out around 70 litres or roughly 15 1/2 gallons. May need and extra couple of leaves in the rear ;D ;D

You will see the rear sway bar hanging underneath as well. I am currently chasing a modified sway bar and need to measure and send this one off to get one made.

So there it is for now. I will add some shots of the heater core as well in the next post.

Oh yes and that wiring  >:( >:(

Hi there,
great build you got going on.... the craftmanship in your welding and fabrication is inspiring to say the least

2 questions please

1. What MIG welder are you using ( looked kinda like a 130 amp in the pic ) ?.... i think i need a MIG welder soon

2. Is that a B&M Megashifter you installed ? if so can you post more pics of that install please ??

keep up the great work... i'm sure we all are looking forward to your next posts

Not a B&M Shifter but the parts are interchangeable.

I built mounts onto the tunnel so that it added a bit more strength to the setup.

Will take some more photos at the weekend.

Here are some photos of the interior.
Seats - Embroidery, although not original, is a due to a touch of inspiration from Jack's efforts in white. Thanks Jack. I showed your photos to the upholsterer and he was certainly impressed.

Just a qucik update on where i am up to.

RE WIRING THE WHOLE BLOODY CAR ??? ??? ???

Toady I have nearly finished the engine bay.

Had to work out how to mount the alternator a little bit higher to clear the inner guard.
I designed a mounting plate that allowed me to rotate the alternator a little bit higher.

As Pete (aka FC Hoon) is a little too far away I sussed out an engineering firm in Toowoomba who cut it off a cardborad template.

For any of you fellas out ther if you need one I can get one made for around $45 per plate.

Will post some photos shortly.

Cheers

Hi Craig;
Where did you get your fuel lines made or did you buy material and bend them up yourself if so what size material. Anybody else have ideas I am at the point of running my lines from the VP fuel tank to the V6 I have a set of commodore lines but being prebent they are hard to reform or are they able to be annealed and reused.
Yeh I know lots of questions but need the help.
Don't mean to steal the thread Craig but your lines are so nicley laid out.

Neil H

Neil

I did attempt to use the original lines but ended up making my own after much sweat and tears.  Oh how I wish I had a rotisserie. :D :D

I used 8mm or 5/16. I bought a cheap double flaring tool kit from Super Cheap and half flare the ends to bell out for extra grip on the tube.
Also bought a multi pipe bender (1/4, 5/16 and 3/8). If you still have the donor car grab the tube mounting brackets as well as they are very handy when mounting and insulating the lines.
The tube I have used is mild steel and a little difficult to bend. I did get my hands on some lighter tubing that was way easier to bend and flare. I went back to the same shop and they had run out and only had the thick wall stuff. ??? ??? ???

I will try and get some photos of the fuel lines up into the engine bay as I have relocated the inline filter between the engine and firewall and return line in and around the steering mount plate

I have also done a similar layout, utilising these insulated mounts, with the transmisson cooler lines along the subframe legs to the front subframe.

Hope this helps.

Thanks
Craig D

Neil

Something else I came across when setting up my custom made tank was the fact that the fuel return line drops fuel directly onto the internal fuel pump to cool it.

I had to go and make some adjustments to the tank to allow me to relocate the line to the appropiate spot.

It was an educated guess which was spot on.

Cheers

Craig D

Title: Re: Here we go again!!!
Post by: FCRB26 on March 26, 2012, 07:13:08 PM
I thought it drops directly onto the pump as its in the swirl pot to get that last drop of fuel into the pump and to keep it always swimming in juice.??

Title: Re: Here we go again!!!
Post by: FCV08 on March 26, 2012, 07:48:39 PM
Hoon

It could be a combination of both as when the fuel gets low there is not enough up around the pump body to cool it. When fitting the pump  the base of the pump was sitting about 15mm off the bottom of the fuel tank at an angle and the top of the pump was about 100mm above the tank bottom.

When the return lines sends it back it would run off the pump housing into the swirl pot.

Thanks for your comments as all is good for my progress.

Cheers

Craig D

Post by: JB on March 27, 2012, 09:24:36 AM
I re used the original VT fuel lines, straightened them carefully with a block of wood and small taps with a hammer so not to kink the lines... Then re bent with a pipe bender. Not perfect but not a show car.
Cheers
JB

Title: Re: Here we go again!!!
Post by: FireKraka on March 27, 2012, 03:35:05 PM
Thanks guys great answers as always. I think I will try to straighten the original lines first and see how I go as I'm trying to stay on budget which isn't much not that a budget seems to matter when trying to build a car if you ever tried to add it all up you would never do it again.

I did get the rubber mounting blocks Craig and am going to use them, it was one of the things that I liked about your set up it certainly keeps them nice and neat.

If I can't straighten the originals satisfactorily I will go to the brake shop and get some of their line as it is very easy to bend.

Look forward to some more photos when you get a chance Craig.

Your right JB my car was never built to be a show car either so I am not trying to be anal about them just don't want them to be all over the place and with the position of the return pipe because I'm using the standard VP tank and in tank pump I have not altered the position of the line so hopefully no issues there.

Neil H

Work has been kinda busy so progress has not been too fast

I did have trouble with the alternator being too low so I designed a mounting plate that allows the alternator to be moved inwards and upwards from its original position. Belt needed to be a little longer but it all fits and works. I did have to mod the top alternator mount by around 5mm to move it forward. The mounting plate was laser cut from a cardboard template. (how easy is that and only $40 ;) ;) ;))

did you get a Commodore unit modified, or a complete new unit made?

JB will work out the video upload later.

Was looking for the headlight buckets for the front speakers and came across what I thought was an inexpensive substitute.

Don't look too close but you can buy them from Woolies for about six bucks. I rivetted and sealled them in.

Here is my underdash gauge mount. I modified it a little as the steering clumn bracket is chrome and I want to see it as well.

Have fitted the bonnet now to start on the front guard alignment.

JB

Finally had a crack at getting a video done. So here it is but not real long and had to jump the fuel pump relay to get it started.

My daughter got it on her iphone but came in at 93MB. I have reduced it down to around 13MB.

Will do better once I work out how to upload a little smaller file.

I have not ewired it up as not sure with running the 85amp Alternator whether there will be any damage.

The temp light is actually my charge light but well keep that a secret ;D ;D

I chose the mixing bowls as they were easier to come by for the speakers.

Hopefully up town next week to get the full exhaust fitted.

 - Rears are 15x 7 (3.75 in. BS) running 215 60s

I spent bloody ages tracking these down and ended up buying in direct from the US.

I had them drilled to the Commodore PCD of 120mm as well.

It took 4 weeks from ordering to delivery to Toowoomba. Could not recommend Billet Specialties enough as they were very helpful.

They have some other styles as well that will suit the older cars. Must warn everyone though they can get a bit expensive but I am very happy with the end result.

Cheers

Craig D

To all

Car is engineered and registered as at 2.00pm today. ;D ;D ;D :D :

What a fantastic feeling.

To all those who are still on their build keep going as this feeling of being able to jump in and take it for a spin whenever you want is fantastic.

I deregistered it back in 2002 and finally back on the road today.

I guess my post now gets moved!!!

Good luck to you all

Regards

Craig D

Thanks to all who have made such positive comments.

I would also like to thank the many who have indirectly contributed to me reaching this fantasticlmilestone.

Inspiration
Pedro, for giving me a clearer outlook on life

Knowledge
JB - your build however long it has taken, gave me the drive to keep going along with some great ideas
Brett - your many posts on the technical aspects I.e. wiring the wiper switch etc.
Jack - you know, those damn seats  ;)
Ken - your knowledge and never ending source of spare parts
Pete - your skill, expertise, generosity and willingness to take things to a new level with you build
NES - your ability to keep taking pete's insults  :D :D and humouring us all

And finally to all those who contribute to this forum whether it be in humour or technical advice.

I look forward to meeting some of you at some stage in the future, hopefully in Tassie, or somewhere up the east coast. Anybody heading through Toowoomba please PM me

BTW I have had three requests for school formats just today. Not sure whether that is a good thing or not

Cheers Craig D

Thanks Craig, I feel honoured and slightly surprised and overwhelmed by your comment, it's taken me a while to answer as i didn't know what to say, I'm nothing special just an average bloke doing what he has to do to get by each day, some days i get through pretty well distracting my mind by working on my wagon or doing stuff with friends and family and some days i just fall to pieces dwelling on the past too much, anyway congrats on getting your car finished and thanks you made me feel better about life at the moment :) :)

Craig, The same as pedro. You created your own piece of history and yes you might have used some ideas from others but that doesnt mean your car isnt unique. Feel proud mate as even though some of us didnt use others ideas, it certainly prompted us along the way.

I haven't commented because I lost this thread when I went into the wilderness with my new house build and my 2 car builds. But I must say, the last few days I have been using your car and Jamie's build and others, Mt Isa Boy and Pete's etc, as inspiration to really get going again, despite not having my new shed up. There is always something you can plan, research, sort or clean up because it all adds up, in the end, to getting closer to the finish :P. There is something about your car that is drawing me to it. It's one of the most photogenic FC's I have seen. You must be really enjoying it.  8)

Awesome console Craig, the best flattery is imitation & I'm sure this will be copied quite a few times. Also I think the best job is if it looks like it came original, that's got it in spades!
