Title: 'Horn Badge' shaped dealer sign
Post by: Shayne on August 12, 2007, 10:21:31 AM
I've got a book from a New Zealand museum, and in it is a picture of a round enamel sign depicting a horn badge.  Around it are the words 'Holden Sales & Service'.  Sorry, I can't scan a pic.  Unsure if it is dome shaped or just a flat sign.

Has anybody got or seen one of these, or were they unique to NZ?

There is a cast aluminium sign about 40 cm in diameter with horn button on it and it is painted in horn button colours. It is dish shaped - this could be what you have seen

Thanks for your reply Ken.  I think this is an enamel sign, and although it is difficult to judge size in the picture, it is at least 700mm wide (based on the fact that it is above a truck grille).  It is round, painted red with white border and then the blue triangle with yellow lion emblem.  On top of the triangle is 'HOLDEN', left hand side is 'SALES &' and rhs is 'SERVICE'.  I will try to scan the picture when I get a chance.  It is a beautiful sign.  Judging by the quality of the museum, it wouldn't be a reproduction either.  It is a private museum with over 175 trucks (most restored), 89 fuel pumps, 9 tractors, and hundreds of signs and number plates.  I reckon Heaven probably has a foyer like it!

Most probably a dealer contracted the local signwriter to whip it up in the day.
Here is a common sign from the day.

Yep Alex - that's the one I mean - but sounds different to what is described.  The only other sign I have seen is the one off the back of the owners booklet with "Advancement of Transportation" around the edges and the comical car in the middle.
Clearly not the one described - but just adding this little bit for extra info.

Hey Ken.
This sign is flat and on timber.
Similar but not the same.
I have seen the 1 you described, even have a pic of 1........somewhere.

Thanks Alex and Ken.  This is a picture of the sign.  I should have posted it to start with.  I have a third picture which I couldn't scan, and it is possible that the sign is slightly 'dome shaped'.

Credit for pictures to Robert Dick.  Taken from his book 'Trucks...' published in New Zealand.
