Title: Heads
Post by: fcvan on August 13, 2002, 12:21:44 PM
I was wondering if anyone can help me, I have a 161 red motor and I would like to put an unleaded converted head on it, I can get a 186 head which has already had the conversion but will it bolt straight on.

G'Day FC Van
A red is a red, it should bolt straight on, with possible slight increase in Compression ratio as the 161 was a low compression motor ,in relation to the 186 that is ;)

Now if it was an almighty, all conquering grey motor it may be different ::)

Matey,

Before you bolt anything on which will ultimately run on unleaded, I would strongly recommend in getting the exhuast valve seat's hardened, otherwise you'll be coughing up heaps money a few miles down the track
with valves pulled up into the head and paying a bit more.

Hope this helps,  :)

149 and 161 engines had closed chamber cylinder heads. They were high compression engines. Look at the back of the head near the heater tap outlet and their should be a L stamped for low compression or H for high compression if you want to make sure. The chamber size is what affects compression ratio.
