Title: Wrecks - Poochera SA
Post by: Martin on May 21, 2006, 10:05:43 AM
I went on a fishing trip to the far west of SA and saw these at Poochera, about 650km west of Adelaide.

Not much to salvage here - and no i.d. plate, either.

Engine bay chalk marks show the colours India Ivory over Empress Maroon (1958 colour), and upholstery (what was left of it) appeared to be red with black inserts

Flanked by FB ute, XL Faolcon ute, what appears to be a single spinner Customline, and Mk II Zephyr utes.

While I was there these two rolled past, on their way back east from the V8 race in WA.  Had to catch them up for a pic:

Hi Martin,

Surferboy and I saw those wrecks on our way over to Jindabyne last year.  I stopped on the way back and got some pics of them...very similar to yours...  :D

It's interesting how the crayon marks eventually show through the firewall paint as it fades...

Catch many fish??

cheers.....Brad

I've driven past those wrecks probably more than 50 times & this was the first time I'd spotted them.

Excellent weather - 7 consecutive days in the boat - and bagged out every day by 1:00pm at the latest.  Great!!!   ;D  ;D  ;D  ;D

Always interesting to see the wreck pics.
I didn't realise that the 'later' models had the chalk on the firewall as well as the FX/FJ.  Does anyone know at which model GMH stopped this?  I've only ever seen examples on FJ's, and it is nice to see it on a few original cars still driving around as well as the sun weathered wrecks.
:)

Hey Shane
I was cleaning the paint off the firewall on my van the other day and found  "Dutchess" under the black paint . It was manufactured in  April 1959 in Adelaide and was assembled in Brisbane in  ? 1959.
It got me thinking how they designated what colour each car would be and I imagined some bloke on the line going (arr, we'll paint this one green and that one, err blue, wadaya reckon mate)
Anyway I thought I'd found something unique and unknown but there you go seems all and sundry know about It already.
                            Brad.

Actually it's not that common.  It would seem that only the SA plant wrote the colour on the firewall.  I'm yet to see a Melbourne vehicle with the crayon marks.

Leon, your car was originally Black and White

Leon.
He would have written the numbers down when he first saw your car and just looked up his database.  ;)
Interesting little bit of trivia Ken re the SA plant.

Alex

Leon, I saw your car at the Sydney nats, I think I actually mentioned to you at the time what the colours were.
The flame thrower remains in my memory banks as well:D :D
