Title: Can anyone identify this gearbox?
Post by: Dave_EH on May 11, 2006, 06:55:31 AM
Hello,

I am considering purchasing this 5 speed to put behind a red six.

The seller thinks it is a Borg Warner T5 from a toyota, which is very similar to the T5 fitted to the VK commdore.

I have also been told toyota never used a T5 box, rather another Borg Warner 5 speed that isn't that great.

Description....
******************
mate i was told it was a t5, it is a steel cased box with a aluminium bell housing, extention housing and top plate were the selectors are. it has a big number five cast in the side of the steel case. the shifter sits at the rear of the extention housing and is held in place by a big nylon screw setup with a lock ring with fold down tabs.

Hope this helps it is all i know and the wreckers said it was the same as the 5 speed in the vks but aperently some came with a jap version whitch is slightly different, we think it is the one i have.
*******************************

This combo provides good value as it is a complete set up for bolt up to red motor.  It is only half the price of the remaining clutch and tailshaft costs i need to finish my celica conversion.

If it is a T5, are they an ok gearbox for use behind a warm red?

Thanks
Dave

T5: Tremec 5 speed. Pretty sure they were fitted from vk upwards, where as the borg warner was a toyota box.

The borg warner tranny's have a borg warner tag riveted to them.

the T5 is quite a strong box, never had any troubles with the couple that we've had, and they did cop a bit too...

Hi Dave_EH.

The Borg-Warner 5-speed box you have there is an Australian B-W box & probably out of a Toyota Corona. The box itself was used in Sigmas, Coronas, Bluebirds etc in the mid 80s. A similar box was also used in VH/VK Commodores & XF Falcons.

Not a particularly good box & nowhere near as good as a T5.

Dr Terry.

Thanks very much Dr T.

You've been invaluable as usual and saved me a few dollars down the track.
