Title: brake pipe block off.
Post by: Ed on March 18, 2006, 04:22:28 AM
Guys,

I am trying to block off a brake line from the distribution block (HQ type).

what is the best way to do this?

normally the pipe flare seals against the inner taper  when tightened down with a nut.

if I remove the pipe and weld closed the nut - will there be a potential for leaks?

second option is to weld the pipe closed, therby leaving the flared end in place and hence no sealing issues?

any ideas?

Cheers

Ed

gday ed, have a talk to a brake shop they might have a trick or two. maybe if you place a plug in the pipe first then weld you might reduce the chance of leakage?

Hey Dean,

the brake shop gave me a blank stare... and then nodded when i asked if I should weld it... confidence inspiring stuff!

i reckon the flare needs to be retained for sealing, and the nut cant be welded because of heat distortion to the threads and obviously flare shape.

I may block off a vertical pipe at the lowest end so any air rises up into the block where it can be bled out.  this also gives the appearance of a non-modifed brake line.  this is for the installation of the line lock.

another question. Should a brake line lock be a discreet install or in plain view.

id prefer discreet mounted for rego purposes etc, but if i go to the track will scrutineering ask for a installation which is in sight? eg Nostalgia drags rules permits line locks but asks for visible wiring.. what exactly does this mean?  wiring to solenoid, or wiring from power to switch to solenoid etc.

any thoughts?

Cheers

Ed

*light bulb* I just got the solution.

In my keen-ness to fit up the linelock I forgot there are 2 pipes coming out from my MC, one for front and one for rear.

just need to place it in line on the front circuit.  the distribution block remains untouched and no need for any block offs.

d'oh.
