The Mobil map is obviously a bit up-market compared to the Shell version. As you can see the maps are the same, as is the text beside the wagon, so these were obviously done by someone else and "branded" for the service stations. I don't think my Shell one has the pic of the FE sedan on Zig-Zag, but I've only got these two scans from it handy. (I used them with a Run Report in Sideplate from a club drive around those parts last year.) The map (and FE wagon) is the same as on the other one I posted and on RETs.

They seem to have been produced by the same place though as the same type setting is used on the brochure as on parts of the map. Would anyone know if such maps turn up on Ebay from time to time? I sure wouldn't mind getting hold of some of those beauties, especially if there are any old Mobil/Shell touring maps of Victoria. They remind me of when I was growing up of how life was so much simpler and much less hurried.

My maps and brochures were on ebay - they were in a bundle of tourist info stuff on the Blue Mountains that someone had obviously got in the late 50's and then put away after the trip. Try searching under maps victoria and any other combination of words that fit what you are after. Something is likely to pop up from time to time, and with any luck it will be a real little gem emblazoned with FE and FC illustrations. I was just looking for some nice period pieces to go in the glove box, and also got an old Sydney street directory, as my FE was a Sydney car. Happy hunting. Cheers, David |
