Title: Fuel Sender Help
Post by: utey on January 26, 2006, 03:14:39 AM
Fuel gauge needle flutters goes to full/MT changed the gauge still the same.
Had a bit of a fiddle with sender worked ok for a while.
Can I do anything to get it to work or must I replace sender?
Rare Spares  sell them? Get them any where  else.
If I get a new one do I have to change over the float?

Nick,

Check the screws holding the sender to the tank housing are tight and making a good earth contact. The sender uses this connection point so it must be providing zero resistance in the circuit.

Clean all contacts, in a 50 year old car many issues are related to series resistance caused by dirty earths and connections.

Rares have reco ones www.rarespares.net.au

While we are on the topic of fuel senders, can anyone tell me what other Holden senders had the same resistance as the FE-EK which I believe is 30ohms.  The TG Gemini senders look like they could be easily fitted to FE-EK and are readily available for next to nothing and they look to be a better (cast alloy with plastic float) unit.

If they are not the same resistance, could they or an early model guage be easily changed so they match?

Hi Mike.

The only other fuel tank senders with the same 30 to zero resistance are all Holdens from 48 to '72 HQ & HB, LC, LJ & TA Toranas.

All late Holdens have higher resistances & work in the reverse direction.

Thanks for that Dr Terry.

Do all of those later models listed (that have the same resistance) have the fuel line take off come out of the sender?  Any idea which may be the best to modify the float on to fit the early tanks.
