Title: Something different......
Post by: Motörhead on September 09, 2005, 06:10:27 AM
Well this is my pride and joy, admittedly it's not an FE/FC but I love it all the same....a 1963 EJ Special sedan in its original Sepik Green paint with Atherton Ivory turret.

The photo was taken nearly 5 years ago but the only difference now is that a proper ivory-painted steel sunvisor has replaced that crappy aluminium mesh sunvisor. Still has the 138ci Grey motor, 3-speed crash box  and has many NASCO goodies including the spats and a Special Warmaride fan-boosted heater.

Any next project might just have to be a nice FE Business or Special. ;D  8)

Beautiful, Pete.
I love the EJ. Not everyones favourite, but I think they have rocks in thier heads. Beautiful.
There is one just down the road from me, which belongs to an old lady. Her husband bought it when it was 3 months old, from another old lady whose husband died just after he got it. The car is a Special, with Hyrdamatic. Great thing is, it is all black (Mega rare), with a beautiful red interior. Sweeeeet. She gave me all the original books, along with her husbands log books (He died 20 years back) & also the original advert from the newspaper. She has asked me if I want it when she is too old to drive..........Ummmmmm, OK! :o ;D ;D

All Grey powered Holdens are cool!

Ummagumma,

I too am a huge fan of EJ's, particularly the wagons. I love the rear quarters, much more sculptured than the plain old EH. Also the rear extension on the roofline is just beautiful.

When I was young a friend's older brother had a blue EJ wagon with a white roof, lowered down with 8" chromies on the back, 7" on the front. This car is one of the reasons I love old Holden's.

Anyone got one like it - swap ya an FC wagon!!! :-)

Thanks for posting.

Cheers,

Craig.

Ahhhh what would I give for an original Karlsbad Black EJ eh Rob ::). My psychotic ex would definitely be suitable barter material lol.

I found this pic of an original stock Karlsbad Black EJ Special at oldholden.com, a 64000 mile example with original Grey motor, Bolero interior AND....YOU GUESSED IT....NASCO accessories!!! 8)

And within the same month it seems, this vehicle was then reduced to something resembling not an EJ but an EA 'F$%D'......
One beautiful EJ (and a Karlsbad Black example at that) rendered less than pristine :'(

Hope you get given that black EJ Rob....you know where to find me though if you have second thoughts about taking the car on board ;D

Cheers ...... Pete

I have to admit that I like EJ Premiers, I actually owned a black EJ Premier for a short while.

The lady I bought it of said it belonged to her x & she would sell it to me to get rid of it :)

She could not locate the keys, so after I got it home I  found the number on a lock barrel and had a key cut.

Opened the boot and behold...........a complete set of Encyclopedia Britanica and World Books,   :( all wrapped and boxed, the x must have won it on Sale of the Century and shot through.

Any way, the dreaded rust had done it's work so I sold it on. Still got the books though.

Hi.
Pete, that is a very pretty car. Thanks for the heads up on the colours. I wasn't sure if they were FB EK colours still. I would love to get it back to that condition. Interior is spot on, but the car is a little faded & has some small amount of panel rust. But looking at those photos, it would be well worth the effort to get it back to 100%. I will let you know when she hands it over & if my wife tries to boot me out for yet another car, I will give you a buzz (For the car, not a bed ;D).
Zulu,
A black Premier must be a very rare car indeed. Look it up in the Britannica & see how many were produced! ;D ;D

Rob J

Craig,

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/holden-ej-station-wagon_W0QQitemZ4574614431QQcategoryZ32057QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem.  I'll buy it, then we can swap. ;D

Rob,

You make me sick (green with envy) ;D

Pete,

The sedan looks very nice.  Reminds me of the one that my uncle had - in 1968 it was painted in a blue very much like Cyan Blue.  It was the first car that I can recall wearing 'custom' paint.

Cheers

Brett,

This EJ wagon is too 'pale' for me. It's a mid blue I've always wanted. Not sure what the colour is called, but I am serious when I say I want one, and will swap the FC wagon to get one.

Better still if the EJ comes with big chromies.............

Cheers,

Craig

I just bought the FC crewman mentioned on this site as well - now 4 ol'holdens, and 3 ol'caravans - but no boats...yet!

Hey Ummagumma,
I just noted the aerial on the gutter mould. Is it a Ferris fold-down? What radio do you have for this car? I have just purchased an entire picnic radio set, but it doesn't have the aerial. Lucky I have a Ferris here. Just curious to see if the Ferris fold-down was used on other radios.

Earlee.
Yes, that was me on the caravan site. Still trying to get the old van off the guy down south. Good score on the FC Crewman. Poost some pics! We would all love to see. You're like me, I like ALL old stuff.

hey Rob saw your EH on this thread (very clean mobile), and couldnt resist but get a bit off topic.
are you going to run that at standard? ive inherited a 65 or 64 cream and ivory roof EH 179 HP and am over the moon with it.
do you know how to interpret the engine/chassis plates into information?

thanks.

Heya Rob

Yeah mate, that roof gutter aerial is a Ferris fold-down in excellent condition, scored for the princely sum of $10 four years ago. My EJ came from the factory without a radio and stayed that way till I bought it. The radio in it now is a NASCO Airchief with interstate radio stations marked on the dial as was found on early EJ-spec Airchiefs, the knobs on it aren't the correct pattern but I'm not complaining ;D.

Bob
I'd also suggest logging onto the Victorian EH club's website at www.ehholden.com.au as they have a complete list (with correct color names) of paint codes for the EJ and EH's. They also have a section where you can collate all the data for engine/chassis numbers etc. and then send those numbers in a pre-arranged format to the EH club whereupon they'll send you a reply with data as to the build date and such.

Cheers .... Pete

Hi Pete.
Good score. I like those aerials. They one I scored has a mint little red plastic knob on the top. The actual aerial is a little rubbed through in the chrome, so I am going to dismantle it & get it all redone.
I might be able to get a set of knobs for the radio for you. Not sure. A mate scored a box of old radio dials not long back & asked me to ID them,. there were ej ones in that lot. I will see what I can do.

As for that EJ EH site, it is very, VERY well done & has heaps of info. BUT when I sent my engine, chassis & ID plate in along with a story about my car, the person who replied was very rude, very arrogant & he gave me no indication of what those numbers meant. He went so far as to say I was making it up & had forged the paperwork I had. I have had a rant in the rant & rave section about this, so wont go on. Needless to say, I am NOT a fan of the fella who takes the calls there. But again, it is a very good & informative site.

Heya Rob

If you can get hold of a set of EJ-spec Airchief radio knobs, I sure as hell wouldn't hesitate to make you an offer ;). Please PM me if you're able to get hold of those radio knobs and I'll get in touch ASAP.

I'm sorry to hear about your experience with the EH club. Even though I'm not with the EH club, I've had nothing but positive dealings with them if I bump into any of their members at car shows and the like. That you were stiffed when you made your enquiry surprised me no end, stuck-up attitudes like that are the bane of some car clubs but I would never have expected that attitude from the EH club :-/. Oh well....their problem and I may rethink my position on recommending their service for decoding engine/chassis numbers.
