Hey Spinner... this one's for you mate ;)
It's a picture of The Southern Aurora train arrives at Spencer St Station, Melbourne on 14-4-1962. Plenty of onlookers trying to catch a glimpse...

... and look at this guy... I originally thought it may have been a Standard wagon, but on closer examination, I reckon it could be a Panel Van..... what do you reckon...?

I reken FE van ...it seems to have chrome tail light surrounds and no side spear and no back door handle

Yep, it is a good shot.  That was the first working of the 'Southern Aurora'.  The two diesel electric locomotives are General Motors units, built circa 1957-1960, so you could call them the FE & FC of the Victorian locomotive world.

I'd have to agree with FE_UTE that the car is a FE Van.  There is an FE Special Sedan & a FC Special Sedan along with two FE/FC Utes.

Having a closer look at the van, I agree it is FE too, you can see there's no black dash surround...

Definitely an FE Van, for all the reasons given by others.  I can't see the chassis number, but I can tell you it was assembled at the Melbourne factory.  :o

Actually, to be fair there is a slim possibility it was assembled at Mossman Park (Perth), but given this photo is taken in Melbourne that's pretty unlikely.

Anyone know why? (Apart from Ken ;))

Great shots of trains and of course the Holdens etc but have a look at the paving in the road how cool is that!! You can guarantee that is in some plush homes in brighton/Toorak now around the pools!!!

No other guesses?  Oh well, it is pretty esoteric.

FE and FC vans and utes assembled at Melbourne and Perth had the external mirror factory fitted, due to local regulations.  The guard-mounted job is the cheapest of the wing-mirrors (by about 2 shillings), so that's the one Holden used to meet this requirement.

You almost never see that mirror elsewhere, as it is a right mongrel to fit, and not even as effective as the door-mounted job.
