Title: PArking lights in H4 converted lights..
Post by: Ed on February 01, 2005, 02:47:47 AM
Hello I recently purched some H4 conversions to replace my sealed beams.

these dont have any provisions for parking lights however.

I have thought about the following options to incorporate parking lights.

1) drill out the headlight bucket for a small globe. (easy but undesirable)

2) add an additional relay which sources stepped down voltage by adding a resistor, and using this to supply low power to the globe for a dim parking light effect. (my preferred option).

Any thoughts on this matter? would the resistor get too hot?

Cheers

Ed

Ed,

Would it not be easier to rewire your indicators to become parking lights, as they are in FCs?

Edward

Ed,

You might be better of getting headlights like those fitted to Holdens with headlight integrated parking lights. I'm sure there is a version of the kit you bought with this option.

Here is some info a guy on oldholden.com who has done this before: http://gallery.oldholden.com/Headlights

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Craig.

Hi Edward,

it would be very simple to wire up the Parking lights thru the indictors however it's a situation I'm trying to avoid since

FE's had headlight parkers (Im not normally fussed on these details), and  my indicators are orange in colour.

Cheers

Ed

Hi Craig,

I avoided those H4 inserts because I thought they were too flat.  they do have parking light inserts though whcih would be a plus.

I shall look into the viability of either drilling out my reflectors which could be bad.. or the aforementioned low voltage source to low beam circuit.

Cheers

There are a number of H4 halogen inserts on the market. You should be able to find a set with the parklights already drilled and not too flat on the face. I have about 4 or 5 different sets in different cars or in the shed. I looked at my FC which has halogens with parkers, they are different! One is branded Autopal and has a more rounded glass the other just has a logo FEE and "Made in Germany" with flat glass.

I have a pair of Hella's on another car that are flat and with parkers, an unbranded pair which are rounded with parkers and some brand new Bosch in the shed which are rounded but no park light! Also found a matching pair of s/h Autopals from a car I wrecked recently, rounded and with parkers. One of these will have to go into the FC! Surely easier to just buy them with the parkers in them!

ED,
the link below is to a vintage light manufacturer in Adelaide, he does a couple of options,
1. he drilled the reflectors of my last car to fit the parking lights correctly into them.
2. he manufactures his own H4 kit which he uses a very similar profile to original, and can add the parking lights into them
He is very reasonable and knowledgeable, coming from restoring older cars himself(MG's)
maybe that might help a little.

Hey Ed, was just wandering if those lights were xenon.
I have only used my park lights once or twice in 10 years of daily use,
can you run clear indicators with two bulbs in the bezel, even if you make your own bezel, if it is too squeezy you might jam in some jumbo LED's.

Hi Guys,

Dave,

I bought these really "bling" lights which have multi facetted reflectors on the inside.  Unfortunately i now learn they have no parking light feature.

Matt,
Thanks for that link, I may get my reflectors drilled in that case, even though it be a case of all care no responsibility.

Leon,
These lights are not xenon, however a xenon bulb insert could be used in conjunction with the apprpriate ballast etc..  Be wary of cheaper xenon kits as most of them are Low beam only with no High beam provision.

the better ones have hi beam halogen and low beam xenon, and now they are making xenon Hi/Lo.

Im not really interested in using the parking lights however in my personal little book of rules...

"A good conversion should retain ALL the orignal features, not lose them".

Cheers all

Ed
