I did my number plate light not so long ago. I too was not sure exactly how to mount it but I improvised. I made a 'U' shaped bracket with two flat bits on each end out of steel. Then i screwed it into the holes provided by the number plate holder. The number plate light sat nicely into the bracket and is protected by the chrome number plate surround works a treat. As indicated by Mickus, there is a bracket which mounts in the two holes on the number plate surround using two rubber mounts. One side has a piece of brass strip which is your earth to the body via the bumper. The bracket has a hole in it into which sits the light body, the same set up as a dash light.
