Title: Cut it custom by Harko FC2dWag
Post by: HARKO on May 12, 2003, 10:38:08 AM
Im expecting this topic to start off a little contriversial based on the fact that I will be reshaping this rarer style of Van , So all comments are welcome.

This picture is as done in the last 3 plans, It is what I am working towards as a goal.
I have Ute doors to give the curve at the rear of the window frame
A second turret will allow me to have only one weld down the centre once its been spread.
and to keep the cuved side glass I may recess it into the roof when the height has been removed (1.5inches) ;)

A pic of the body at absolute starting point.
In my eyes I have just saved this car as the wrecking yard are just starting to send some of thier stock to the crushers.

Harko,

If you're going to save it, you may as well modify it to how you like it.

Cheers

No controversy as far as I'm concerned - it's your van, you do what you want with it!  But until the second picture looks a little like the first one, I'm inclined to think this thread belongs in the 'Unreal Cars' area.  What do you think, Harko?

cheers

I appreciate your thoughts all,I had this planned out both in my head and on the computer before I bought the wagon (1st one) in fact that was the reason for buying it but I didnt tell the wife that.
Now I have persisted and turned up a great starting point and I will achieve this in due time.
I have so far got the wheels Dragway dragalites (I think francine had ROH from memory)
V6 ,Transmission adaptor kit and rails.
All excelent stainless trims and B-Bars (Thinking about using FE special trim)
HR front ,commodore calipers.
Replacement floor sections.
And more - Everything but the time and space at the moment ,But I will keep updating once I hit it ,
"Shouldnt take that long when I get into it."

Hey Harko.
That is a noble endevour you have there. I had thought to do the same thing a few years ago. I got as far as buying the FC van for the project, but time, money and garage space got the better of me. Eventually I had to move house, and the van had to move on. My van now belongs to someone else in the club, as I had no space for it and I did not want to see it cut up. Here are a few pics of her.

Here is the design I drew up for inspiration. Featured extended doors, angled and bigger B pillar, tailgate leaned forward, with a slight roof chop.

If you want to throw around ideas on this type of project, I'd be happy to discuss my thoughts. Good luck with your project, hope you see it to completion, unlike mine.
Regards
Alex

Hey Harko,
IMHO there is just a tad too much unbroken window (pun intended) in some of those "adjustments". Makes it look a little like a hearse, here's a concept from the owner of Carafano Motor Trimmers. I understand the project is well underway with his sights set on Summernats Grand Champ.
If you don't know Carmine Carafano, he has worked on many top show cars, Howard Astill's Race Rock, Fat57 etc and has a beautiful Statesman that has won trophies all over the country for years.

It looks like I picked your brains Alex ,theres 2 more at flynns if you wanna have another crack at it,
(http://photo.starblvd.net/~flame/4-5-5.jpg?i=1035133257)
(http://photo.starblvd.net/~flame/5-1-1.jpg?i=1035133257) The strips on the tailgate I planned to swage roll in rather than chrome or stainless strips and thats about the only difference
The side glass I thought would butt together like a split screen Rod and the curve on the door frame as I mentioned will be with the ute doors.
Where did you get your inspiration from ?
I got mine from a rendering in Street Machine that looks unreal as they do but is almost totaly unachievable ,When looking in detail it has an extended guard with the front leaned  forward ,the wheel arch is reshaped, The chop lower to the front  with curved side glass (top to bottom)
The roof has been sectioned,The rear guard eccentuated,Tail lights reversed and hey wooden roof racks I dont think so !!
lots of things out of standard proportions
(http://photo.starblvd.net/~flame/1-1-2.jpg?i=1035133257)

Stinky I hope to see it soon ,Looks amazing and like a hell of a lot of work and/or $$$$, Extended front sheetmetal IMHO this would be a gigantic task - the bonnet tapers to the front imagine trying to change that angle of taper !
And those rear wheel arches are stretched hugely ,the inner arch will protrude above the window sill.
I love it and hope to be developing rolls of film on this ride when it appears but also I hope it can be achieved

Ret can you now move this thread back into the Real cars section ,This project is now underway !

Although Im not going to air the final photoshop plan Id prefer to keep it under wrapsand Im sure you will enjoy this build much more as you watch it come together.

I dont think the missus was as happy as i was to see the primed subframe  ???

Heres a couple more detailed pics .
The badge on the firewall reads  "Your warranty will not be honoured if car is over loaded or speeding " Or something to that effect.
I also found a magazine inside dated 1959 - iTS a photographic mag but pretty cool none the less.

Theres a photo of the rust in the lower firewall/silll which is great , You dont see many this good, The floor pans need replacing in the front and thats about it ,there is a spot about 5c peice at the rear base of the door opening but it will be removed when the pillars are moved.

The whole subframe looked like this and cleaned up a treat.

A photo of the tray area shows how clean and not knocked about it is.

Keeping in mind this hopefully will be my work car come weekend cruiser extending the doors will allow access to the rear seat and add some cool too.

Hey Harko
The project is moving along at a rapid pace.
Car is surprisingly clean compaired to the pics of when you found it. Nice score.
I would suggest you remove the firewall tags before the blaster. You will get all the paint and won't damage the tags. Squeeze the rivets in from inside the car and pop 'em off.

You're killin me Harko!

You may recall the pictures of "Hilda's" cancerous cowl vent and firewall base/sill.

I magnified your picture of the firewall base/sill 20X  and you're right,.......... there is a spot of rust there!!

Is this the same vehicle that left the wreckers on a fork lift? You've done very well. Keep the excellent pics coming

Thanks guys,
Yeah Emu Ive been there before too and its a good feeling to start realy getting into the areas you cant see and find theyre better than youve anticipated thats for sure.
The cowl vent rubber came out in one peice and complete ,and still flexible, Just amazes me that a car can sit untouched and exposed to the elements for 30 odd years and remain in this condition.

,Its gonna be a long week. cant wait to get it blasted

Harko,

This has turned out to be a great score. I remember this car clearly when it was sitting at Flynn's at Cooma, up to its windows in grass. Its great that you are on your way to returning it to the road.

How many blokes would have looked at it and thought it was unsaveable? Heaps I reckon, and look how good the body has turned out to be.

Congrats, like everyone else I can't wait to see what you produce.

Cheers,

Craig.

Whacked the wheels under the Dub that we had bought for it and dropped the car down to the rough height it will sit .
And we dont like em.
Might do the same with the commodore rims on photoshop and see if Im headed that way, disks can be machined and clearances should be OK

The guy gave me the full speel about how good he was and how he wouldnt warp anything . I said "dont do the roof or quarters and he did way more than I wanted just to prove he is capable.

Great minds think alike?
I watched a program on Foxtel the other night about Troy Trepanier (he owns the business Rad Rides by Troy in the USA, making famous cars such as Quadra-Chev, Sniper, Chicayne amongst others)
Anyway, he had been contracted to build a car by ebay motors using a car and parts from ebay only.
When stripping the paint they used chemical stripper on the large flat areas and left the crevices and hard places for the blaster.

Haha Alex Im not going the whole hog as I did with my ute and as you know Ive been playing with this one on photoshop for a long time.
For the measurements I consulted in my Highly technical Longitudinal diversity equivilator conducting algerisms of gravitational sparseness during the chemical imbalance with consideration towards the hypothetical rheamans theory and I came up with 41mm out of the front pillars and Im not sure of the rears yet ,Im going to lean the whole rear tailgate upper and lower forward about 5 degrees and possibly shorten the rear quarters a little.

Now between you and I and Nicko Im gonna have to quote "Another one saved from a restorer"

Title: Re: Cut it custom by Harko FC2dWag
Post by: HARKO on July 19, 2004, 12:03:56 PM
The front in the previous photo is at the height it will be welded at after widening the roof and the rear in this shot is only down about 15mm so it gives a bit of a false reading and it cant drop until i trim all the tailgate out.
Im only going 1.5 inches so it just enhances the lines with a couple of other body tricks up my sleeve to draw attention elsewhere - hope it all comes together succesfully.

Thanks for the comments fellas BUT
(And as much as I hate to say it) Theres been no progress this week apart from cutting the windscreen posts down an extra half inch so its 2 inches in total now,
Ive also been doing some more photochopping to get some acurate measurements .
And Ive made up templates for the entire car along with marking out where all my cuts will be .
This week should see some good progress ,Im on arvo shift and that means I can play cars all morning hehe

Ill post pics of the progress as this damn computer lets me .

Here you can see the gap produced that will have to have a new curved filler sheet placed in.

Hey Harko.
Nice cutting.
Hard to tell by the pics, but I think it needs more lean. If you are going to this much effort, you want to make sure it is noticable. You may have already thought of this, but be sure to keep the lower window line horizontal. It would look odd if it sloped up at the rear. Those rear windows will be a bugger....what are you thinking in this regard....perspex?

Alex

Post by: Glenn 'Stinky' Stankevicius on August 11, 2004, 04:44:33 AM
I had thought about the problems of the rear side windows too, being a curved piece. What about welding in a curved piece of steel to fill the gap between the side and rear windows and then you could use flat glass in the sides.

I have seen a picture in a mag of a US Style Nomad wagon that has a double sliding window set-up in the rear that eliminates the C(?) pillar (D being the last pillar). The effect of the pillar is still there where the two windows overlap and appear darker. Not unlike the sliding windows you get in Taragos and Spacias.

Thanks guys.
Shayne I was hoping somebody would pick up on the saw - you dont see any angle grinders huh  ;)
I toyed with the idea a while back and figured I like the tailgate up while driving and its already been done.
Im also toying with the idea of barn doors similar to an ambulance but chopped , I like the look chopped (photoshop) if I can get it to suit, and this would eliminate curved glass in the rear .
Not sure which way Ill go yet.
Alex I hear ya mate ,The line along the window has to be straight and the tailgate lower may drop a little with the tilt so Im concerned about that too.
Im just about to take some angles off my photoshop image to make sure im keeping to plan.
And perspex Alex "stick it up ya rs"  ;D Been there done that and dont wanna go back,Id rather spend a weeks worth of metalwork than drop in perspex.

Stinky I noticed on that hearse that the rear corners were filled to allow side glass to be flat but Ive gone off the idea of having side glass at all.
Might just fill a side panel full of louvres  ??? ,,,I mean I think Ill just fill it in and the kids can look out the lengthened door glass (theres a price to pay for being cool).
I realy liked the rendering you put up months back of the red nomad Alex but Im usualy one to rack my brains for an idea that someone hasnt come up with before ,sometimes takes me to the borderline of sanity but hopefully it pays off..
Hopefully this week Ill be working an area that will raise an eyebrow or two so watch this space.
10 4 over.

Hey Harko,
Gutsy effort so far, I love this sort of stuff. Bit squeamish to try it myself and besides don't have the talent.
Just a thought on keeping the glass line straight - If you make the top gate close over the bottom ala later model wagons, the frame can be extended to bring the gate glass back in line. Wont leak so much neither. Keep those artwork pics coming.
cheers,
Leigh

Hmmm.....problem with filling it with metal, is that it ceases to be a wagon and becomes a chopped van.
The thing with perspex is that it can be shaped to make it easier to insert.....in me rs.
Some pics for thought.

Better give you an update hey ,Ive been real busy blah blah but heres some "Progress" photo's .
Please give me some feedback on the overall proportions but take into account that Ive ended up chopping the front down 3 inches due to the drop away that the tailgate created ,The roof will have to be shortened about 7 inches to realign .

And this one shows the overlap of the two rooves that will be lapped using a pnematic lapper which will basicaly put a step the thickness of the metal which will sit under the roof line allowing less distortion and less chance of a blow through .

Hmmm ,Last posting on August 3rd    (scratching my head) Where did I go ? Well inbetween that update and this I repaired the floors and rails and totaly stripped and smoothed the FC sedan ,Bought a chev , finished off the 192 th700 conversion in the FB , Sold off an FC wagon and sprayed up some bits for the bommodore.

Whew still dont seem like much on paper huh but I sure have been busy.

Soooo ,I picked up the bat or should I say welder n grinder again 9 day's ago and started at it full time with no job to get in the way.

There's only 2 pic's here I know but more will follow over the next couple of week's.

This pic show's the height of the tailgate after raking it forward ,Unsure of how I'll deal with it but I think it realy detract's from the flow of lines on the car .
Also shows the pieces it took to build an extended fin.
And although the wrong angle it also shows the roof shortened.

Here's some final chop measurements for those interested.
Front chopped 2 1/2 inches
Rear 3 1/2
Roof shortened about 9 inches
Tailgate raked 7
Wheel arches extended 1 inch at this stage but may change.

And the B pillar will be moved back about 6 inches and raked forward at the window so doors will be extended and matched to suit.

The entire floor will be lopped out maybe early next week and the donor cars body lopped off then these two grafted together  :o

As i say I'll update pics when I have the room to take em ,Cheer's

Hi Harko
Like you said it has been a while. I can help you with that time you seem to have lost.

As we all know here on the forum you are a family man with a relatively young son, so I would say you devoted some of that lost time to being a responsible husband and father.

It is good to see you back on the chopped wagon, keep up the good work and we all hope to see more photos in the coming weeks.

Hi Harko,

Looking good, love the floor :)

it's hard to tell from the pics but the upper edge on the tailgate lines up with the pillar and this sits about 1.5 inches lower than the window line? so a taller sectioned tailgate is required to make up the extra length from the new angle?

anyway it's a mammoth job and great to see it still being cut up and re-done.

nice work

Cheers

Ed

PS how do u manage to do so much on your cars??

Yep thank's Jim your right on the buzzer ,He actually started walking on my birthday last sunday ,We were over the moon :) He still has trouble gripping and holding the grinder while its spinning though hehe
After nearly four years since becoming a Dad Ive realised time in the garage is great but time with the kid's is fantastic and looking at a finished welding job has nothing on watching the first step's of my boy.

The progress photos are sensational although what’s with using my old car as a storage area for your tools? ;D  The Chevy sure does look right at home next to the EK (or vice versa), whenever you find yourself lacking in motivation, you know that all you have to do is wander outside and take a glance.

So now that your metal skills are up to speed, I know of a certain EK ute that is crying out for a haircut.  You will be happy to know that my hiatus has ended and I have returned to the shed with newfound enthusiasm.

Merry Christmas

Chuck

P.S. FWIW, I actually prefer the taillights right way up, don’t get me wrong, I’m all for the concept, it’s just that I think that they got it right first time.  IMHO it would interrupt the rounded flow of the rear quarter.

Harko, I'm with Chuck on that one, the lights just don't look right upside down.  However, maybe if you graft in another rounded section from the top of the lights into the bottom you could have three frenched rocket lights or somthing like that in beween?

True , I'm keen on sticking with the original theme of the car and changing grille headlights or tail lights would take away the original I suppose. But I am going to invert the bumperette's
Caddy bullet's are killer and I love em but I've seen them used on everything sooo .........
I reckon they would look cool though not an original idea anymore.
Good stuff chuck ,You can make your first blast down to the south coast and blend the beautiful vehicle with the beautiful scenerie and let your virgin EK look at all the monsters and realise how lucky it was :)

Title: Re: Cut it custom by Harko FC2dWag
Post by: HARKO on December 29, 2005, 01:25:11 PM
Today's input is predominately just to remind me sometime in the future of what a bastard of a day can actually seem like.
I finished off yesterday with not much direction as to where I would take it today but I headed back out after breaky and pondered how it was all going to tie together.
Iv e been working on attaching the roof permanently so I can lift the body without twisting it and am at the point of attaching the rear pillar's.
I have finished the inner fin and side window work to stabilize the tailgate pillars and help the rear pillars support the roof, The rear pillars had to be twisted and squeezed with straps and clamps to get them to line up properly ,whilst setting the roof at the right height and in the correct horizontal and vertical positions.
Read through that slowly again Harko (later reference of how much you earned this car) and you will realize how almost impossible this task is ,With all the curves and poor quality control in their day,  Acurate measurements were almost impossible to achieve

OK lets start the technical stuff now .
The tailgate is now situated in a slightly opened position compared to the standard rake ,The raking tailgate has caused the top door to sit ajar and fouled the curves over the top of the top gate and has caused the side pillars and top gate to miss align as they flow down to the lower tailgate and a lot of the factory gaps to change especially around the upper gate.
after 8 Hours "8 HOURS" I achieved absolutely nothing .
In the ninth hour I cut the hinges with a 3 mm cutting disk and bolted the plate I had cut off to the tailgate ,I was trying to clamp the upper gate into alignment so it could be tacked but it was like fighting an octopus and when I finally got it tacked the heat had moved one edge of one hinge and thus putting the whole lot out of alignment and meaning the tacks had to be cut back off ,I know that sounds easy but the drama it took to get it all into position meant that  breaking the tacks allowed it to all drop way out of alignment again.
End of the ninth hour I poured a schooner of bourbon and coke and simmered.............and simmered ..............and simmered.
I poured another and simmered ,I noticed i was I firing when I was walking around the shed tapping the tape measure then smacking ,then punching ,Then looking for something to damage hehe.
If you know me well I just dont loose my cool when working on a car ,How would I get this far if I did ? .
I walked away ,Took a breather ,went over the street to see the neighbors efforts for the day on the FC wagon he bought off me  and he is absolutely kicking butt on it , So I didn't want to be there either considering he made it an open competition for me to finish the van before he finishes the wagon.
I went back home and watched.....and simmered....
Until I thought Im not going to finish for the day and allow this to beat me. A lateral approach is what I needed so I used a few planks of hardwood to gain better measurements over the tops of the quarters ,and set a 6 of the 8 clamps on different angles .
Ground some of the top tailgate frame down ,curved it to clear the gutter rail because of the new position and tacked in the hinges.
The roof position was looking good and I tacked it too.
After browsing and measuring and thinking of every possible scenario (I think)
"I had beaten it" and within half an hour just by using a different approach and some lateral thinking .
So I sat back and poured a schooner of bourbon ........... and grinned.
Tomorrow will be slow going as well ,Then I will hit some big "photo worthy" stuff.
and possibly tomorrow I will look a bit further into flush mounting the tailgate glass
10 - 4 ,over

Your ute is looking pretty awesome too mate ,If Im giving you motorvation then its reciprocating (hang on thats a big word)
Yeah legaly I can run a 427  , 429.9 to be precise but I have been looking for a healthy runner for over two years with no luck ,Imagine if I wanted the Canadian block  :o So it might possibly end up with a 400 small block yet ,I would love to run the big block purely for the torque (pardon the pun) and the throaty note but I guess if there aint none ,There aint none.

Today Ive just secured all the corner areas and final welded everything that attatches to the roof so with a bit of luck tomorrow will be a big day....

I think the few of us that are around are still picking our jaws off the ground. I have also been enjoying 2 days of peace with the wife and kids off at their Aunt's place, and I have been sorting brakes on the FE, so not a lot of time on the board.

I would like more details on the donor, but only after I finish off the FE Sedan  ;D otherwise I'd be off on a donor hunt for the next FE/FC build.

mate this build is something that a lot of people would only dream about achieving and look at you, i dont know what you do for a living, but i know a few panel beaters that would never take the chance of building whats going to be one of the most talked about cars around when its done.    i have only been on this board for 12 months and love it when you put up dates up of this van.  its just great to see some one that is not afraid of taking on such a job in there home shed.   please dont deny us of seeing the rest of the build up     thanks for the pics of the  build so far.    steve

gees mate dont go boo hoo on us now.,i for one have been watching this car go ahead and have not commented as im embarrassed due to the  lack of work on my own car.
your car is an inspiration to many. im just been lazy and will have to start working very soon as i have no excuses because i just got a half side hoist off ebay that lifts car up to 870mm high and is air powered ,yes that meens the sills are been done by me after waiting for two local welders this last year who never bothered turning up after lots of promises.
cheers bud ,go have a beer or two and relax for a day or so,you deserve it.

Harko,
Don't be despondent that we haven't encouraged you via this forum.  As everyone else has already added, we are just amazed and awed by the project.  Good one mate.  Most of us are in holiday mode.  I consider I've had a great day working on the FE if I check the Oil & Water!  (I'm a lazy BasT$#d)

I can add that I bet your little girl will be a bit embarassed about posing in front of Dad's car when you bring out that pic at her 18th or 21st birthday :D   Cute family photo.

Happy new year, and I'm looking forward to seeing the finished project by Anzac Day. ;D

OK OK I chucked a wobbly ,I think the heat had affected me a lot.
I apologise for the dummy spit but in my defense I had seen 130 odd veiws on the thread without a single comment .
I thrive on comment's good or bad but prefer the good ofcourse (like everyone) and to finaly get to the top of the hill and share it with great excitement and hear nothing in return it kinda feels like I am pissing into the wind.

Thank's very much for the kick in the pants ,I need to know what you may think I already know....
And in retrospect I'm not usualy the one to be posting good comments on other people's threads ,so yep I'm a hypocrit and lesson learned.

Well in that case I'll put up a few more snap's tomorrow night showing the body at full drop over the sills and at ride height, Im planning on dropping out the spring's because the donor weighed a tonne and the chassis is way higher without all the weight on it.

By the way Stinky if we can keep the donor's origin as low key as possible it may allow me to reap the benefit's of my labor's before someone else cashes in on them (not meaning yourself) Just I have a bad habit of needing a break from one project after a while and I drop the ball - if someone else picks it up and beats me to the punch I'd spew.
When I'm done though there'll be no prob's sharing any of it though.

No rush Harko, once the FE is done it is onto the wife's FE ute. If that takes as long as the Sedan, then it will be a few years yet  ;D
Just stay "on the ball", there are a lot of people who want to see this car on the road and all the stages in between.

Thank's Stinky ,I'm battling at the moment 4 week's hard slog and back to work Monday .

Here's a (that's what arm talkin bout !) pic.
It's on the bump stop's burt you can see the ride height once raised will be pretty mean.

The final stages of getting the body to fit right meant alot of trimming on the firewall's ,rear wheel arches ,forward area of the sill's/firewall ,donor's floor and spare wheel area ,Pretty glad it's on now and the only other thing to change is to move it rearward 5mm.

The extended wheelbase is hardly noticable with the extended wheel arch and 16 inch rims.

Quick update - I spent the afternoon trying to track down a big block chev to dummy fit in it and find out if its going to work or not.
Some of you may remember me trying to track one down about a year ago  :o I'm still trying hard.
So please please ask your Hot Rod mates or drag car or boating mate's if they know of anything (please)
The outcome being if I cant find a 427 (any big block for dummy fitting though) I will have to resort back to a small block , And when its legal to use a big bloke why would i fit a small bloke.

By the way for those who like excess info onboard ,I was told that a big block will sit on the same mounts for the engine and box but stretches 2 - 2.5 inches further forward.
In other words if you have the room in front of the engine you could drop out the small bloke and install the big bloke in a day....

The pic of the van is on the stop's so it will ride a few inches higher than pictured I spose ,shame ,but theres no way of turning the front wheels right now hehe.

Shame the hookup didnt go ahead Shane but there's always a next time mate... Atleast you know where I live now :)

Quick up date .
The big block is now sitting in place and all look's sweet ,(I think its going to work :)

I heard this today and was hoping someone onboard could back up the claim , He said "If you install a small bloke with a long waterpump you would then be able to simply remove it and replace with a big bloke and short water pump"
And at a quick glance and run over with a tape it would seem to be true.
Both are the same engine mounts and mounting position ,same position for the gearbox ,although the BB is about two inches longer forward of the mounts.

I guess time will tell ,I have some block huggers ,a hi-rise manifold, fuel pump ,heads and sump  (good mates)

Tomorrow will let me see a bit more ,Had to take it easy today and knock off early for my Son's 1st Birthday bash.

It looks real good sitting in the engine bay , definitely worth a tim the toolmans "Urrrrgh Urrrrgh Urrrrgh"

Hi Harko.
Big block modified FC Vanette done in a Nomad style. That is just too cool. I have been watching with interest & I gotta say, VERY cool & VERY clever.
I have always been a "Stockie" lover, but am on the road to being a convert to the Radical Modified style. Keep it up. I may not say much here (On this thread anyway ;)), but I have been watching from the word go.

Cannot wait until it is a goer!

Thank's Hammer ,A man of few word's but straight to the point and considerate :) ,Thank's mate I apreciate it.

Here's a couple more pic's from over the weekend ,
A few drink's and the boys thought it was due for a paint job.

Engine is only tight for the exhaust between the two middle port's on the drivers side around the steering box and it look's like it will mount real low and well behind the crossmember too so driveability should benefit well.
With the engine so far back and bucket load's of torque on tap I may have to think a little more about popping the wheels in the air (strength)  and rear suspension setup maybe. :) I've always wanted to have that sort of fun.

Quick update - sorry no pic's Torque lol.

Had a lazy week after returning from four week's in the shed to days at the paid job and nights in the shed :) and only managed to do a little more trimming of the tunnel ,firewall and pedal brace. and found a better position for the engine / box ,a little higher allows me to change the spark plug without tilting the engine and gives a little more clearance for big bore pipes to wind thier way out
Tomorrow I have to make some engine mounts to weld in and find an acurate height for mounting.
The gearbox mount at this stage will be HQ but am realy unsure if it will be a permanent fixture.

Its a good way to do it all at this point because I dont have to avoid any inner guards or subframe ,Just build the sheet metal around it all later.

I have no computer at the moment so be patient for some updates .

Title: Re: Cut it custom by Harko FC2dWag
Post by: HARKO on February 05, 2006, 02:26:45 AM
Yep Stinky the computer is fixed again but Ive had progress only in a small way by moving the factory engine mount's forward about 30mm ,I was planning on puting in some plate to bridge the gap then just weld the box section on top for the engine mount to sit on but after removing the engine and box I found that it was going to look very rough that way .
I then cut off the plate that covers a structural mount ,cut the mount out and shortened it ,reangled it and dropped it a little lower so that when the covering plate goes back into place it will fit flush with the crossmember rather than on top as per factory.

I know ,It all sounds a bit mumbo jumbo without seeing pics ,and I dont have a before photo to compare to ,but when I roll off a few more shots I'll include this area.

I'm shaping up a gearbox crossmember today from a HQ .

and some measurements that seem to be working beautifully are the powerglide although I had to remove nearly all of the original tunnel sits up nice and high ,Trans pan drops about 1/2 inch below the chassis rails.
A STANDARD sump will sit about 1.5 inches below the rails and should have 1/2 inch clearance if I choose to air bag the suspension.
The diff andgle is at 90' and the engine - box angle is 92.
That 2 degrees wouldnt be enough to cause any vibration and when welding on the coil brackets and panhard rod to the 9 inch I'll try to correct it anyhows.

Wow look at all that writing , I prefer to look at pictures myself hehe.
Thanks for the interest Stinky ,Much apreciated.

Heres some more showing the fabrication of the engine mounts ,It turned out to be a mamoth task ,Id say Ive had the engine and box in and out about 6 times up to this point...
The mount on the chassis if you look closely you will see that theres another mount under the one Ive spotted on .Kinda like an inverted U shape ,These were shortened and reangled ,Then the plates shortened and welded over them ,Then the box mounts plated off ,cut to angle ,An anti crush tube welded in then the whole mount welded into position.

I might add that with the engine on the mounts and in position if I were to move it in any direction I run out of room "Perfect fit) :)

If this update appears on page 9 ,Page 8 has a heap more relevant updated pics.

The engine blocks were set at the mounts angles whilst the engine sat in position and yep they are different angles to each other to suit.
And I have ground and smoothed the welds over to try to flow them into the base ,The rough looking welds on the front are filler welds over the structural welds that kept tripping the power to the house :)

Well thank you very much Burnsy and Alex .
But I am yet to inform you that I have sold the nomad ...

I sold it to a young bloke from Sydn   --- Just shittn ya's hehe.
but it is about to be put back in the cue yet again ,I have to make room for the body to come off soooo the Sedan is back to the front of the cue for reasembly.

Here's an interesting photo ,Ive given the 396 loaner donk back to my mate which is another story altogether but I'll tell :) .
The poor ol FB wagon was scraping her bum on any uneven ground with the heavy chevy parts in the cargo area ,Loaded up to the hilt .

So the photo is actualy with my small block and tunnel ram ,This setup busts the myth for me because it does bolt straight in the place of a big bloke or visa versa.
Just this setup allows the carby/filter height to drop about 2" compared to BBC
The big block is 2" taller , 2"longer ,and probably 2" wider in each head .

Before I pack it up in the corner would anyone like to see anything in particular photographed ? speak now or foever hold your piece..

I found this when installing a 428FE Big Block in place of a 302 Clevo in an XW Falcon I used to have.

That Mr Gasket scoop you have there Harko, they come with a spacer to raise it up to bonnet level, not needed with a BB, but required with a small block.

Title: Re: Cut it custom by Harko FC2dWag
Post by: HARKO on February 17, 2006, 12:10:04 PM
Aha I noticed those spacers could be positioned either way - So thats why .
Theres no hope of that Mr Gasket sitting on the small bloke anyways because the engine is so far back that the tunnel ram is hitting on the bulkhead and it still needs pushing back about an inch ,Doesnt suit anyways I think and the small bloke is only in there to get back some floor space for the time being...Cheers though but dont use that F word again :)

Mr Muscle reminds me of an Ad of a musclebound bottle bouncing around a bathroom :)

Dunno ,No idea what to call it ! Ive never been one to name my cars but a name for this one would be pretty cool.

My favourite part of this thread is that to start with I formed up a concept and one of the first reply's was "I think we should move this to the Unreal Cars section Harko !" :)
It got moved and it was moved back once it was underway :) .
Hmmm "Deliverance" ........ Nah Ive got no idea what to name it .
