G'day all,
               Has anyone out there restored their steering wheel , i have a large cracks at the base of the arm , what is the best thing to fill it with bog? or is an epoxy resin the best thing to use, and where do i buy it from , etc

Rusty ,I Redone my FBs steering wheel about two years back with bog and white 2k , The pretty large cracks have come back as a hairline fracture type crack but considering its done daily duty in the past two years and I hang off it for stability around corners with a face full of Maccas ,the flexing and bending had to do something.
And the 2k paint was sprayed on in the shed with no booth or lights and looks just as good now after all the grease and food and rubbing as it did when i sprayed it.. Would highly recommend doing it.

I had a go reworking mine. Had several significant cracks which I filled with high strength araldite epoxy. Took a couple of goes to overfill then rubbed back smooth. Then prepsol'd and undercoated with acrylic. Bit of spot filler and lots of undercoat sanded smooth then applied 17 top coats of acrylic black gloss. Polished back and looks brand new. Mind you, I haven used it on the road yet as I still haven't got a motor installed yet.

Trev it looks immaculate, did you restore the horn button as well? if you did you can do mine

I had a win at the last Bendigo swap meet. $10 for a complete steering column inc wheel, ring & horn button.
I fixed up the new wheel as mine was severely cracked.
The horn button probably looks better in the photo than it does in real life.

ten bucks! u sure had a big win mate, i paid 50 bucks just for the steering wheel and a crappy horn button

Hey there Emu ... I have restoring these wheels for a while now and was supplying thenm to rare spares for $165 on a change over basis. They were selling them for nearly double that!... The methods I  use are the same as above - boging up the cracks and a liberal dose of 2K .. comes up a treat and I have them fitted to the FC Ute and the FC custom. The hairline cracks have appeared and this will happen due to the nature of the original material. ...but they stay as hairline cracks.. so the trick is to start with a wheel with the least number of cracks and go from there .. let me know if you want yours done as we have to do my wifes soon as well. I have been charging up to $200 for this as the materials I use are expensive for one off wheels .. send me your Indicator stalk as well and if you want the whole coloum and I can do this for about $180 for you. Sounds like Streetneat may be a good option as I assume he lives in Qld as well? Would save on the postage down to Melbourne & back. Also he uses 2K paint which would be harder (less wear) than acrylic so would last longer and require less coats.

Thanks for the info. I think I'll leave my steering wheel down the priority list at the mo. It needs doing, but I need to budget for the absolutely necessary on Hilda - such as rust repair.  :'(

She's slowly being cured. Will post some more shots soon.
