Title: Rather Dashing (purists look away) Post by: Glenn 'Stinky' Stankevicius on March 07, 2004, 04:30:41 AM Here's my FE dash almost ready for paint, holes for gauges are done, just need to trial fit the small lights I am using for the indicators and warning lights.
Title: Re: Rather Dashing (purists look away) Post by: nicko on March 07, 2004, 04:39:23 AM thats very well done, looks like a factory sports dash should look,
Title: Re: Rather Dashing (purists look away) Post by: Digger on March 07, 2004, 06:49:06 AM Mate,
That looks dam good, should set the dash off when finished. 8) 8) I have seen this done on a fe ute in Melb but not set up as well as you have done. Steve. Title: Re: Rather Dashing (purists look away) Post by: Glenn 'Stinky' Stankevicius on March 07, 2004, 07:56:48 AM The dash itself has only cost a carton of VB so far, although the weld cracked between the two RHS gauges when the jigsaw was going around.
What blew me over was the template I was using, I got it from the local Gauge specialist as a dual 2 1/16 gauge bracket. If you put the bracket over the "bumps" that house the choke, light switch etc they line up exactly! So the spacings match quite well, had to cut some of the framework behind the dash though. The dash and glovebox will be mid-blue to match the material on the seats, the rest of the dash is the light blue that the car wore in it's previous build. Title: Re: Rather Dashing (purists look away) Post by: zulu on March 07, 2004, 11:38:49 AM Well I consider myself a bit of a purist Stinky, but that dash looks pretty good to me!
Title: Re: Rather Dashing (purists look away) Post by: Sarge on March 08, 2004, 07:02:21 AM Stinky
Dash looks bloody great. Something differant yet semi original. Well done. :) ;) :D ;D Regards Sarge Title: Re: Rather Dashing (purists look away) Post by: Phantom on March 08, 2004, 07:12:51 AM Stinky ,
The dash looks sensational, will look even better when painted and installed , good luck with it Cheers Rusty Title: Re: Rather Dashing (purists look away) Post by: Glenn 'Stinky' Stankevicius on March 08, 2004, 11:34:19 AM Thanks for all of the feedback fellas, it certainly helps keep the enthusiasm up. Also helps kill off any niggles about things being "not quite right".

Maaaaaate did you make another for me. It looks great and as zulu said is in keeping with original styling, I noted you even kept with MPH. Just one question were are you mounting the Tacho. Title: Re: Rather Dashing (purists look away) Post by: Glenn 'Stinky' Stankevicius on March 08, 2004, 12:05:48 PM JOKE ALERT!
Not really attracted to the Tacho, so I won't be mounting it anywhere :D LOL But seriously, I am leaving that until the dash and steering column are in, so I can try out different positions. I was thinking of it on the column, but I have also seen one mounted on the dash that looked good. The gauges are all Autometer (American) and there wasn't really a choice of kmh, but I would have stayed with mph even if there was. Title: Re: Rather Dashing (purists look away) Post by: Ed on March 08, 2004, 09:52:38 PM Nice one Stinky, tasteful indeed.
Cheers Ed Title: Re: Rather Dashing (purists look away) Post by: FC-V8 on March 08, 2004, 10:35:23 PM Stinky
Very very nice! I am currently playing around with something very similar if it turns out half as good as yours I will be rapped. Glenn P/s does anyone know of a speedo that has ignition & indicator lights in it that would fit FC Title: Re: Rather Dashing (purists look away) Post by: sgo on March 09, 2004, 06:45:26 AM I don't know about the ign. lights but the FJ speedo had the high beam indicater light at the top of the dial and with a couple of diodes in the wiring you can use this to flash for the indicaters as well. You don't need two lights as you know which way you're turning!
Maybe this can work with other similar speedos as well? Title: Re: Rather Dashing (purists look away) Post by: RET on March 10, 2004, 03:05:31 AM sgo,
You might as well stick with the FE speedo if you're going to do that, since it also has the hi-beam indicator integrated. Mind you, once you pull one of those speedos out, it certainly looks like it would be easy enough to fit two more lights in there to use for the indicators. just a thought... cheers RET Title: Re: Rather Dashing (purists look away) Post by: Glenn 'Stinky' Stankevicius on March 10, 2004, 03:46:51 AM Jaycar (www.jaycar.com.au) have some tiny (approx 5mm) 12V LEDs in a chrome bezel, that would fit almost anywhere. I have two green for indicators and some red ones for warning lights.
The indicator LED will sit between the smaller gauges on each side. If that is of help to anyone. Title: Re: Rather Dashing (purists look away) Post by: mickusmickus on March 10, 2004, 05:08:58 AM Stinky
You bugger I have been toying with that idea for ages. The other idea i had was to get one of tose 4 in 1 guages and mount it into the dash MICKUS Title: Re: Rather Dashing (purists look away) Post by: Glenn 'Stinky' Stankevicius on March 10, 2004, 08:23:28 AM There's a bigger bugger on the board, and they have been holding out on us! They sent me a pic of their custom dash and it blows mine out of the water.
I will let them reveal themselves though. Title: Re: Rather Dashing (purists look away) Post by: sgo on March 10, 2004, 09:51:08 AM slowly, quietly, the bird builds his nest??
Title: Re: Rather Dashing (purists look away) Post by: Ed on March 10, 2004, 09:50:38 PM .. hee hee
this bird has been hard at work over the last few months, with alot of pressure to finish the nest, perhaps even to present it as unfinished due to other factors, this is one project i must see to the end. The project shall be revealed in due course. Thanks Ed ;) Title: Re: Rather Dashing (purists look away) Post by: JB on March 11, 2004, 01:43:47 AM Does this count?

Using a bit of 1/4 " round bend this up to form an eyebrow (shot gun style)over the new smaller guages.... this would mimick the central eyebrow...I will try and do this for you in photo shop but no promises... I think this would be easily achieved and would give a more intergrated look.... Just my two cents worth... cheers streetneat
Title: Re: Rather Dashing (purists look away) Post by: streetneat on March 13, 2004, 10:05:57 PM Here ya go stinky... Maybe this one could be lead wiped for a better finish..its easier than you think....

Do not tempt me with such ideas. Anyhoo, with the gauges on the LHS being so close to the edge I'd never get it to look right. However, I think there is another person on the board that is building a dash that this could easily be done too? Title: Re: Rather Dashing (purists look away) Post by: streetneat on March 15, 2004, 12:19:33 AM Heh heh heh...badder than most.... Yep I am quite keen to give this one a shot myself... If some one wnats to send me some 2" guages I might give it a go... cost would be about $250 in making it which cosidering the hours involved is a bargain.. and would be metal finished ...no bog.... If any one is interested let me know..... gemini speedo fits well as it turns out but not sure I like the look.... Gives a resetable odometer and readsin KMH of course... The speed readings would be a bit optimistic for an FC but the factory posted up 110 Mph (albeit written backwards..) so maybe its not such a stretch of the imagination....... cheers streetneat
Title: Re: Rather Dashing (purists look away) Post by: Ed on March 15, 2004, 09:35:35 PM I actually made eye brows over my 2 inch guages but since I recessed them all on an angle the eyebrow looked strange, so I deleted the eye brow altogether.
now ive got the major shape right Im thinking of doing the lot in fibreglass. Cheers Ed |
