Hi Guys.

The 253 & 308 cranks have the same stroke & bearings why are you changing ?

There are 2 differences that do matter, the crank counterweights are slightly larger for the 308 (larger, heavier pistons).

Also the area around the rear main oil seal is different, to suit the earlier neoprene seal or the later rope seal, but this is regardless of whether it is 253 or 308.

Hope this helps.

Dr Terry.

:Pwell terry,i don't know where you come to the have conclusion that 253 308 have the same stroke.if this was so there would be no such thing as a 308,as for the bearing's the red and blue are differrent but are the blue and black different hmmm this is my question can anyone tell me before i buy a rebuildable engine.fact's not theory.reason being is to get my fe rego'd it 's got to have a 253 but as for the inturnal's it will be a 308,if ti fit's that is.thank's terry no offence intended... ;)COLFE58 8)

COL58FE  ::),
253 and 308s have the same stroke, it is the bore size that is different!
308s have a 4 inch bore. 253s have a 3.625 inch bore.
You can't bore a 253 out to a 308.
Why can't you fit a 304 Holden Black motor or a 307 Chev to your FE?

Col,

Ace and Terry are exactly right. I'm pretty sure 253 are 186 size pistons while the 308 uses 202 size.

By the way, Dr Terry is an EXTREMELY knowedgeable Holden enthusiast who also owns a successful mechanical repair business.

Terry Bebbington is his real name, get yourself a copy of his excellent  book "50 Years of Holden".

A quality and informative read about Holden cars. What Terry doesn't know about Holden and Holden history isn't worth knowing.

Cheers,

Craig.

Col,

The Chev V8's are the ones with countless stroke combinations. As everyone has already said, Holden 253 & 308 V8's differ in bore diameter.

Out of interest, why do you think you can only use a 253?  Unless the rules have changed in the last couple of months, the RTA capacity to weight ratios should allow a 307 Chev or a 304/308 Holden.

The Chev requires less engine bay sheetmetal modifications, and HK 307's are very affordable.

If you are interested, I have a brand new CRS Chev to FC Holden crossmember, engine mounts and extractors that I will sell for 75% of the CRS price list.

Regards

Edward

Hi Guys.

GraigA has been very kind in his praise, but all I do is to answer the questions as well as I can, as they're asked.

I should have included Craig on my Christmas card list.

Craig can you connect me be by direct message about the other thing we were discussing.

By the way Merry Christmas to all, especially the Holden fans.

Dr Terry.
