Thanks Craig,
They are the only electronic pics of the car I have !!
I Have just returned this last weekend from Mt Gambier with the car.
The club over there have just had their silver jubilee show and shine (25 years) and thanks to "Jockster" on here, who chased me up after you posted those pics from the AHD earlier this year, invited me over for the weekend with the car, as I won the first show and shine in 1978 !! And the car is basically still the same (the paint is a little sad now though )
My family and I had a great time and has even got me interested in the car again.
I may have to join a club again !!!

Cheers

ALAN.

Alan,

I have a few more of your car taken on that day.

Send me mailing address and I'll post down hi res versions on C.D.

Car's like yours and Norm Dawes (the FC racer) are like hidden treasure to me - so many of these have unfortunately disappeared never to be seen again. The great thing is that I know there's another old custom or modified FE/FC waiting in a dusty shed ready to make a reappearance.

Come on guys lets find them!!!

Cheers,

Craig.

Alan, what an incredible car you have, and to have kept it for over 25 years? is amazing, I remember seeing it in the '86 steet machine magazine with the Golden Holdens, your car was one of the reasons i got hooked on FC's, it looked so good.  :)    Tony

I saw an amazing purple dragster on a trailer heading for Heathcote a couple of years ago (which got me interested in adding some purple to my project) and after mentioning this to a spray painter who works for Victor, told me it was Victor's old car.
So there's 2 still around.

OK, This as much as I can remember???
Rick (FC 059) took his off the road to do a full chassis, jag rear, and V8 conversion. It was 3/4 finished when he purchased 57 chev coupe,so the FC took a back seat. I think it was sold in that condition,I have never heard of it again..

The other post about the purple car is correct,I did see it once on the road in the Lillydale area, in Melbourne.
It did look familiar at the time, and some one else told me that it was Victors old car.
Maybe it is still on the road as well..

AL.

G'day Al

Heres some good news for you, there's still a purple FC on the road in the Lilydale area, it an amazing piece of machinery. I had the chance to look at it when I was at the local racecar builders factory.
I remember this car taking on a HSV commo one night on the highway, what I remember most was watching it move passed us and seeing its tail lights in front of us as we were no match for it. I still remind my mate about it from time to time ;D

Some cool stories about some (in)famous FC's.
I first saw Alan's car at the 5th Street Machine Nats in Canberra in 1982. I was in awe, one of the standout cars at the show.

Hey Al, here is a pic of the old girl I took at the show. Hasn't changed in over 20 years. If I remember, Rick's FC was parked next to you, but unfortunately, I didn't get a pic.

Talking about legends from the 70's.  John Petersen strolled into work this week with a Consul he is working on for a friend (note careful not to use the F word)
For those who remember, John had THE TOUGHEST black Zephyr on the road in the 70's and featured in mags at around the same time as Rick's and Alan's cars.  We had a great chin wag with him over lunch as he recalled some of the good times.  The black Zeph is still around, and John has tried to buy it back but the current owner wont sell.

Hi Alex,
Whattya mean "it hasn't changed" I got new air cleaners on it since that pic !!! LOL....

That was another one parked with me then,,a silver and black V8 named "Gunnas dunnit" owned by Lindsay Atkinson. Another one that I have never heard of since,I used his car and mine at my wedding as well!!

Ken,Norm,

Wow,haven't seen John Peterson in years either,he and I go back a loooooong way as well, his car was a super tough MK 3 Zephyr,we had some great burnout comps and things like that back in the 70's and early 80's

Hi all
I can assure you that Alans car still attracted a lot of attention at this years Show and Shine, even with a few minor paint blemishes it was still one hell of a machine. It looked nearly as good as it did 25 years ago when it won our first show and at that show it was accompanied by Victor Reilly's FC and John Petersons Zephyr as well as some other very nice machinery. The 4 FC's on displayed got a lot of comments from the public, even had one group of kids about 16 year age group say that the four Chevvies were nice...oh well two of them had Chev engines I suppose...
It's good to see that you are becoming interested in the FC again Alan, it still looked good when it was here for the show n shine and it still smokes those back bags up pretty well, I had a good veiw from my position behind you. When I eventually get my film of the show developed hopefully I will have a good pic of the four FC's in line at the show, I should warn you however that one other thing that hasn't changed in 25 years is my photography skills (or lack of)
Cheers
Jock

Hi Norm,
That must be a later pic of Victors car. When we went to Mt Gambier in 1978 he had the Crower fuel injection on the engine.,I think he got sick of trying to keep it running at anything less than flatout ! and put the manifold and carbies on it...

Alex,
It was originally a sort of dull red,as in that pick above.
Then it was Candy Apple Red. Can't remember when that happened though. And now it is purple !!

And yes I think it was in black primer for a short time, but I could be wrong on that.

hi i was surprised when a friend of mine told me he was looking at this site as he is interested on buying a fe holden and he says iam famous -not quite .its good to see alans car is still going strong iwas also at the first mt gambier car a long time ago and still have the old trophys (made from grey motor engine parts) i have seen my old f.c holden at the last oct 2002  croydon tuesday nite crusie nite and it is now purpul colour its weird as this was the colour the car was when purchased in 1974 for $5.00 -yes 5 dollars.a ton of money has been spend by self and its 5 other owners since then.its good to here rick is doing well i like to catch up with these guys as time goes to fast these days. there was a guy many of you might also know bob grambiu (spelt a different way i think) this eh holden was also at mt gambier  first show.he has just rebuild this car into one of the best street driven cars i have seen a while. we both used our cars  (jans 66 mustang fastback also just complete a nice wake up rebuild from being a sleep in the garage for 10 years) and had a ball. great to hear people still remember the old days cheers -victor reilly

Hello,
About three weeks ago i saw a bright purple FC , looked in immaculate condition , mags and with no bonett on, did not get a real good look , lotsa chrome in the engine bay, looked like it was going for a test run and had stopped. But what a beautifull looking car.

Yeah, there was a few memories over in Mt Gambier,my kids are now really keen and want to go on cruises all the time now..hard to find the time these days though !
As soon as I saw that purple car in Lilydale,a couple of years ago I thought it looked sort of familiar !!
Anyway we should catch up some time maybe ??

These cars bring back great memories of when i first saw them. Vic Rielly's car inspired me to biuld GOA350. Vic didn't own the car then but the car venition red with Weld Pro Stars and owned by Duane Gerdes at around 1988. It was doing burnouts in the main street of Alexandra vic and man was it tough. It never used to run a bonnet or wipers.
I remember Gunners car used to sit in API's showroom on display in about 1990 then disappeared. It too gave me ideas.
Without these cars, cars like mine would not have been built, for that i thank you.

Tony told me he had sent the pics to Alex thanks for putting them up. I remember seeing that car at the Blind institute show in the mid 80,s. It used to be a huge show held on a close to 40acre block on the corner of Burwood hwy and Station Streets in Burwood in Melbourne. It unfortunately only went a few years and since then the land has been you guessed it!sold to developers and it is now a built up concrete mess.

Here's the story....

Victor sold the car back in 1983 (approx) when it was 'Candy Apple Red' to Mark Dickinson minus the motor and transmission. He then painted it flat black as is indicated here. Marh then apparently put a 350 Chev in it and according to Victor, it ran a 12.5 quarter.

It's been seen since and is painted back in the 'purple' colour that was on it when Victor originally purchased it for $5.

Finally came across the photo I mentioned of the flat black car. With some of those tell tale signs and the story that speciFEcation managed to find out, this would be the car that belonged to Vic. I would love to see it in it's current purple state.

Hi Alex,

I have seen Vince's FE a couple of times in the last few weeks, once at Parra Exhaust, and once at Chatswood on the road.

The car looks pretty tired, very dirty and well used, even had a ladder across the back seat. Its a credit to Vince in one way though, that the mechanical work he carried out has stood the test of time and daily use.

Still a cool car, and a talented guy.

And like others, Bob's car is a vivid memory - be good to hear the whole story of where it is today.

Cheers,

Craig.

i love these threads, I remember seeing vinces car when i was a kid of about 8 or 9 years old at a car show either in blactown westpoint carpark or bankstown square, it was a smick showcar with some hi tek features like a tv, the wheels that now would be called chasers were not really seen then
i saw it years later when i was all grown up at a run to rosies burger joint and it looked worn and had bog coming out but it was good to see he got his moneys worth out of the car, next time you see it craig, pull out your phone and take a pic.

BYEBYE has been Vince's daily driver car since it hit the road in 1985. Think about what the average VN Commodore looks like today and you can imagine the wear and tear the car has been put through. I believe Vince is talking about bringing the car back up to standard with a full or part rebuild. For those that are not familiar with the car, Vince built the car to full 1985 ADR's, with the rego papers reading '1985 Homemade'. Features included P76 V8, full aircon, articulated wipers, 1 piece door glass, 4 bucket seats, integrated rollcage, colapsable column, crashpad, as well as TV that he used to plug his laptop into for work, and lots of other tricks.
Craig.....added more pics in the thread about Bob's car.
Leon.....the car show you mentioned was at Bankstown.

Alex

You're right Alex, if you compare it to a VN Commodore then Vince is WAY in front ;-)

Vince's car is far from a wreck, just needs freshening up. 20 years of daily use takes it toll on all of us..........

I hadn't seen it for a long time and first saw BYE BYE again at Bob's place out at Dural - Club Christmas party about 4 maybe 5 years ago? Maybe 6? Anyway, like Leon and you I'm happy to see its lasted. And with the same owner, like Alan Hale's.

Cheers,

Craig.

Some more info on "Vic's FC".
Came across an article in Street Machine, June '89 showing what is obviously Vic's old car.
Now owned by Dwayne Gerdes, the article mentions that Dwayne bought the car as a rolling body less engine and trans, smoothed and painted in matt black. Now painted in Venetian Red with 307/350 combo.

Now here is a real treat.
Alan Hale has sent me some photos from his personal collection of his car and a few others, to share with everyone.

I have included what Alan wrote in his emails to explain the photos.

These 3 shots below are the earliest pics I have of the car still in it's original grey/grey colours (light grey roof only) .
I have just fitted the first Red motor,a 161 with a cam ,yella terra head ,extractors and a  Hitachi 2 barrel carby !! That got tossed for a Holley 500 2 barrel pretty quick !!
Chrome glove box/dash and gauges under the glove box that are still in the car today ..
I am about 16 years old there I think ?  about 1971 or 72.
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v117/customfc/holden 1/AlanHale01w.jpg)
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v117/customfc/holden 1/AlanHale02w.jpg)
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v117/customfc/holden 1/AlanHale03w.jpg)

The car is now painted in (the HQ version of 'Hot House' Green) I can't remember the correct name !! Still with 161 power,Tasman mags on the front only, funny looking 'Hood Ornament' !! and some white pin striping.. I also installed an M21 Aussie 4 speed in this timeframe.
I have my P plates so I would be 18 then 1973-74.
Still has 'Preston Motors' sticker in rear window ..
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v117/customfc/holden 1/AlanHale04w.jpg)

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v117/customfc/holden 1/AlanHale06w.jpg)

More to come.

Love the pic with the hood ornament, a classic 70's shot. I dig that pinstriping also.
Thank you for sharing your pics. Great to see the cars early years.

Alex

Anyway in pic number 3,that is our good friend John Peterson MK3 Zephyr leaning on Gunna's car. Pic number 4 over on the right is Peter Fitzpatrick's Brougham that he won the Go-Whoa with several times..

Hi. love the site!!!  My Name is Mark, I was the owner of the FC when it was in black undercoat.... I bought Victor Reillys FC off him minus motor and box in mid 84, he was drag racing it for a while...and wouldnt sell it to me until he ran a 10 second pass which he did in early 84. When i got it I wanted to put it back on the street. It had been off the street for a whlile and whilst it was candy apple red, it had faded and had a few areas of undercoat on the body. One of the conditions of entry to the 86 street machine nats in canberra was that there was to be no patches of undecoat,,... cars had to be painted or all undercoat.I put my 350 chev/turbo 400 in it. Motor was bulit by Bobby Grambau who still to this day owns his black EH   MY064     (i had bobbys EH as my wedding car and left the reception in Victors partners tunnel rammed 66 mustang).. Before I got the FC going we stripped nad painted the engine bay, rewired and re carpeted the car, got wipers, horn and all the other things that the car needed to be steetable done. Once it was back on the street, we changed the cragars for Weld wheels, 15 x 3.5 up front and 15.8's up the back and we were off... I owned the car for 2 years and due to time and other issues beyond my control I didnt have anough time to get the car painted, so to go to the Nats we did it in black primer.... painted it 3 times for $24.95.. Victor was a great help with the car from the moment I bought it off him, he and Bobby Grambau helped me to get it to run 12.55, 12.53 and 12.51 on its only trips down the quarter while i owned it. This was a 3000lb car on 12 month old B.F.Goodrich T/A's  the only change from when it was on the street being the removal of the exhaust, I also put it in the 86 Street machine show at theh exhibition buildings... It was, before I owned it and still is today and great car.and I wish the current owner many many miles of great cruising. If anyone has any current pics I would love to see them on this site.

Hey Mark, welcome to the site.
Thanks for sharing your story on your/Victors car. It is great to hear about your experiences and to be able to fill in parts of the history of a memorable FC. I too would love to see some pics of the car as it is today.

Perhaps these pics will help until that happens.
A couple more pics from Alan Hales photo collection.

"3 shots of Victor's car from the first Mt Gambier show and shine I believe, prior to it being repainted in Candy Apple Red."

Some more pics from Alan Hale, this time jumping back to when his car was painted green.

Green and ROH is with new ROH rear 'kidney' 14" and how high it had to sit to clear.

Green 1 is at Elwood forshore in Melbourne.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v117/customfc/holden 1/AlanHale19w.jpg)

The other 2 are real early Calder shots with the 161 and original 'grey' drivetrain.
One of those shots I shattered the gearbox all over the startline!! I was as nervous as hell, leg shaking and all !! Ha certainly funny now, but it wasn't then.

More great shots of Alan's car. This time the car is now black pre V8. I will let Alan's words tell the story:

'192 Triple' is a bad shot of the engine bay when it was undergoing it's first rebuild to black. I fitted it with triple su's with the engine moved forward to clear the firewall ! I didn’t want to cut into the firewall and the only way to do it right was to change it!!
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v117/customfc/holden 1/AlanHale22w.jpg)
'192 Twin' is what I changed it to! That manifold was actually a genuine holden development one for XU1 Torana that they looked at prior to settling on triple strombergs. Wish I still had it, that engine was fantastic.
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v117/customfc/holden 1/AlanHale23w.jpg)
The next is at the 10th Victorian Hot Rod show in 1975. I was in the Victorian drag racers club back then, and the car is on their stand, I won 'Top Unfinished' at that show and was the first of many shows after I decided it was better to do that than continue drag racing with it then.. Certainly cost alot more than $3000.00 pretty quick...

man, how old am i. all these beasts were the inspiration for my pig. nuthin looks tuffer than seein these ole girls smokin rubber. some of you fellow streeters may recall seein propig on channel 9 in relation to the hoon laws and how a co called drag tag is helping to rid these critters off the road and onto a purpose built burnout pad in campbellfield. the pig is attaining a cult following up there when the ole girl cuts loose. but back to these heros of yesteryear, where wood any of us be without alan, victor and lindsay's initial input into modifying these beauties in the first place. keep those old photos coming, and as long as they do, there will always be an interest in them to members as well as guests.
thanks for the memories folks

Some more of Alan's photos.

First one is just a nice shot of it finished with 192, twin su's, aussie 4 speed and 3.9 :1 LSD and Torana / HK 'chromies' ..
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v117/customfc/holden 1/AlanHale26w.jpg)
Next is a shot of it with V8 now and the new 4WD look that was all the go in the 70's, made the tyre clearance easy back then !!
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v117/customfc/holden 1/AlanHale27w.jpg)
Last one is a pic on the trailer coming back from the Hot Rod drags I mentioned earlier with a rod through the block ! My good mate Dave Ryan from Rare Spares is towing it for me in his and Carol's 56 chev
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v117/customfc/holden 1/AlanHale28w.jpg)
These 2 are from the 3rd Street Machine Nationals in Shepparton Victoria 1978, in the Go-Whoa and an unofficial burnout comp. This was the precursor to the current 'summernats' at Canberra.
If you look hard you might see Chic Henry checking everything out !

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v117/customfc/holden 1/AlanHale30w.jpg)
Last one is another from the Vic Hot Rod show where I had a double display with Bob Grambau and his EH, not sure what year that is. We both cruised to 'John's Picnic' at Pakenham this year

This is the last group of pics that Alan has sent to me.
There seems to be a lot of lookers, but not too many comments. If you want Alan to scan some more, how about showing some appreciation or interest. ;) ;D

1 more from the Shepparton Nationals Go Whoa .. I think the person in the foreground there is Bob Pyz another well known Rare Spares identity.
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v117/customfc/holden 1/AlanHale32w.jpg)

These 2 pics are of Rick Martin and myself, the other FC at the start of the '3 FC's' thread circa 1976-77 I think.
The shots were taken by Norm Darwin on the Sth Eastern freeway in Melbourne before it was open ! They were for a magazine article called 'A Pair Of FC's',, I think it was Australian Hot Rod

Alex, Alan,

I'm definitely enjoying the pictures. The last one is one of the best - remember POS-A-Traction tyres? Limited grip in the dry, ice skating in the wet  :o

The two cars being un-lowered also shows how things have changed, now everything is dumped on the ground, back then it was up high - at the back at least, usually with a set of air shocks. Bad handling guaranteed!!

Keep 'em coming.

Cheers,

Craig.

When i was young, early teens i was mesmerised by FC Holdens.  I used to buy all the mags and also what used to be Just cars.  I have a photo album i just found full of cuts outs of FE-EK Hioldens that i collected.  One of the captions for a FC for sale was GUNNAS DUNNIT and he had this FC for sale for $15000-!!!(worthy every cent, anothe one was the brown FC ute with blown 6)  I will promise to try and scan them all and get them on here, I think people will be amazed by how many FC's they may know that were for sale mid 80's.  Im just wondering though about the phone numbers on the adds??  As I said I have a full phot album of FE-EK's that were for sale, all with pics

Wow, what an interesting thread, Alex, looking back over the cars, and reading the story makes me remember so much. I too had the article that Norm Darwin wrote and it was an inspiration into the build up of my own car.  I remember being stunned when later I saw that Alan had converted his FC from a 6 to an 8. I remember seeing at the 82 nats and thought wow, I had seen it so many times in a magazine and now I was looking at the real deal. Alan if you read this, thankyou so much for the inspiration that you provided me over the years. Alex, thankyou so much for the memories, obviously I hadn't dug back into some of the older threads far enough.

FC 225, that number plate is still etched into the memory banks... :)
