A lot of the American servicemen based at the Harold E Holt naval base had their cars shipped over. The American government imposed a $2,000 bond on each car that came into Australia. If an owner sold their car before their two year tour was completed, they lost their bond. A lot of the cars that was sold were taken to Perth and converted to right-hand drive.

We discussed his demise when the kids asked “Who’s Harold Holt?” I did some research and found he went missing 3 months after being at the opening.
