We’re in Exmouth WA at the moment and found this photo at the Vlamingh Lighthouse.

I found the following tidbit as well

In 1973/74, I spent 12 months based at the RAAF Base at Learmonth, about half an hour south of Exmouth. A lot of the American servicemen based at the Harold E Holt naval base had their cars shipped over. The American government imposed a $2,000 bond on each car that came into Australia. If an owner sold their car before their two year tour was completed, they lost their bond. A lot of the cars that was sold were taken to Perth and converted to right-hand drive.

That’s cool info mate.  It’s the first time I’ve been up here - a great place for a holiday.

I hope the weather is better up there than it is in Adelaide right now John. I’m having a great holiday in my shed none the less. Thanks for the post.
Cheers

. . . Am I alone in seeing the irony of a naval base, no less, named after Harold Holt?

😀😀 Not at all Rob. We discussed his demise when the kids asked “Who’s Harold Holt?”
I did some research and found he went missing 3 months after being at the opening. They renamed the facility in his memory about a year later.

The Harold Holt base is not actually a naval base but a listening station with a large antenna array originally American run.

Sorry not trying to poo poo your fun there  ;D

That may be so, but there's a swimming pool named after him in Melbourne. Australian sense of humour..
