Title: Single Colour FC Specials
Post by: Ken's 57 on April 25, 2017, 08:09:48 AM
Just out of interest, were there any single colour FC Specials produced other than in black or white? These are the only ones I can remember. As a seventeen year old in 1971 I walked into an auction on Parramatta Rd and bought an all white special for $15. Rego number was BNN 402 and apart from a fairly gaping rust hole in the driver's side floor, it was a reasonably good car. I drove it round for a few months then sold it for $20.  :D

Cheers, Ken

Definitely. Adobe Beige, Shoreline Beige, Skyline Blue, various Greys, Hialeah Green, even Terraglow was available as a single-tone colour. The list of trim codes ($2) shows quite a few single colour options for FCs.

cheers

Absolutely, other than Black and India Ivory, there were at least the following after a very quick scan of my records
Ice Green
Cambridge Blue
Adobe Beige
Ascot Grey
Granite Grey
Duchess Green
Skyline Blue
Crystal Blue
Olinda Green
Hialeah Green
Cape Ivory
Some colours were 1958 colours only and others were 1959 colours only. Some like Black and Ivory ran the whole time FC was in production. These colours are now more common for this reason.

I'm surprised there were this many available in single colours. I just don't remember seeing them around back then. Particularly interesting in light of the fact that GMH felt it necessary to introduce duo tone in single coloured FJ specials in order to off-set the strong demand for two tone versions.

I agree Ken. The only single colour FC I recall in town was a black sedan, and it really looked very special (with the dust was hosed off).
But knowing now what was available, I realise we saw only a fraction of the options driving around a small country town.

I have an ice green special, with full paint separator kit installed from factory. Seems pointless.

I'm just about to do some repairs on a single colour [Ascot grey] with full chrome paint separation . It has the red/black interior and all matching numbers . The most original car I have seen in years .

It would be interesting to know how many, or what percentage of the specials produced were single colour  ???

I can tell you that :o

I have 816 FC 225's on my database. So statistically it is well and truly large enough to take meaningful data from.
Of the 816 special sedans, 115 are one colour specials.
28 are Black, 16 are India Ivory, 15 are Ascot Grey and 14 are Adobe Beige.

Percentage wise it may be surprising to see that 14% of special sedan production are 1 colour.

And 24% of one colour specials are black!

Once again thanks to all those people who supply me with numbers from cars they find (wrecked or running)
Without your help I couldn't provide data like this.

Do you have enough samples of utes Ken? I only recall a couple of pale colours; cream & light blue or maybe light green.

Is it possible that multi colour specials may have lasted longer because they are more easily identifiable? Therefore skewing the data slightly (even though your been at it for years?). I'd like to think the difference may be not be that from reality

Interesting question, and one I have mulled over before.
There are a number of scenarios that are possible.

One that I like is the following;
conservative owners bought one colour specials rather than "flashy" two tone cars. The cars owned by conservative owners were better cared for and have better lasted the years. This argument would tend to skew data the other way.
It could also skew the number of grey and white cars versus red and white cars for the same reason.
