Title: Chassis sealant
Post by: rickjen on November 04, 2015, 07:36:14 AM
Hi all, I am just about to put the sub chassis back into place and refit guards etc. What is the recommended sealant to use in the gaps and joins.?

Thanks in advance
rick :)

I used windscreen sealant as it just skins enabling easier removal in the future

I also used a window sealant (Selleys Butyl Mastic) between the mating surfaces. Once assembly I ran a thin bead of sikaflex along the seam. In the future if I (or anyone else for that matter) need to take the subframe off, all that needs to be done is to run a knife along the seal and the subframe should separate due to the non hardening mastic.

Cheers

Rod

Hey Rod, hope you don't need to take the sub frame off in the future as the selley's d mastic sets like cement. When I worked for O'Briens, they used it all the time and it was a problem down the track trying to get the screens back out. Bostic 5614 non skinning mastic is much better for this sort of use as it IS a non skinning and does stay soft for a lot longer.
Regards, Jim

Hi Jim,

I based my decisions on the following post when I went through this process.

http://forum.fefcholden.club/index.php?topic=19669.msg121216#msg121216

There are different types of "mastic". I used Buytl as opposed to D. I hope you are right though - I hope not to have the subframe off in a hurry. Once in 56 years is good going. I won't be around in another 56 years to see it off again.

Jim are you able to tell me where you can get Bostic 5614? I am a day or two away from knocking the back window out of my ute to put a new seal in. Is this stuff the go?

Cheers

Rod

Hi Rick,

I am sorry to highjack your thread.

Jim I just looked online for Bostic 5614 and the info says it is Butyl Mastic.

http://www.bostik.com.au/industry-products-catalogue-sheet-28539-bostik_5614_non-drying_butyl_mastic-m-0-g-0.html

Is this OK for the window sealant. I have a tube of the Selleys equivalent.

Thanks again.

Rod
