Title: Seperate blinkers from rear brakes
Post by: tp.mc on July 07, 2015, 09:57:06 PM
Howdy All,
I was hoping to separate blinkers from the brake lights in my FC.
Is it as simple as running new wires from the flasher and installing bulb cups?

In a word, NO.
I assume you mean lampholders (bulb cups).
You will need the original brakelight lampholder to retain the dual filament lamp which has 5 watt taillight and 21 watt brakelight.
If you want to use the lower lens for indicator/reversing, you will need a 21 watt indicator, and probably 21 watt reverse light.
I'm not sure if you can buy a lampholder and globe with 2 x 21 watts.
If you think 5 watts is bright enough for your reverse light, you can fit a normal stop/tail lampholder with a bit of fiddling, but you will still have to run extra cabling from front to rear, and some wiring(connection) modifications are necessary to make it all work.
It can be done, but it's not straightforward
The easiest way is to convert to late FC specs which flashes the amber reversing light.

Cheers,
Prof.

If you set the electrics up as a late FC then you will have red stop light and red tail light in the upper red section and indicators and reverse lights in the lower section. You use the orange lower cover rather than the clear one you presently have. All you really need is the indicator switch mechanism from the late FC to easily do this plus one extra wire to run to the rear of the car.
Have a look at the wiring diagram for FB EK to see the differences.

I have done this mod on two vehicles. There is already a pre-existing wire installed used for the reversing lights. I tapped into this and got lamp holders from an old wiring loom. I didnt need to run any extra wires. While I was at it I got a reversing light switch and set that up as well. As Ken mentioned I purchased amber lenses with one of my vehicles as it was an FE.

Cheers

Im pretty sure that you can by amber coloured globes if you want to retain the clear lenses

Yep, I did this in my last FE, you have to either file one leg off the amber globe or fit globe holders suitable to hold the Amber globe. I filed a leg off the globe and put them into the FE holder.
