Within the last week there was a picture of an FC that had an RAC badge on the grill on this forum.  I cannot find this picture again and cannot remember who placed it on the forum.I have a RAC (Qld) badge and would like to have another look at the picture.  Can anybody point me in the direction of the picture please.

Does anybody know the history of the RAC?  I guess it stands for Royal Automobile Club.  With Qld stamped on the bottom of the badge it I thought it may have been the forerunner of the RACQ - Royal Automobile Club of Queensland. A search reveals the RACQ name was used since it's founding in 1905.

A search shows that RAC is a UK based club.

RAC clubs were were established in each state from 1903.
There doesn't appear to be any link with the UK RAC club formed in 1897 (other than the concept of providing roadside assistance & motoring services).
The Aus RAC & NRMA clubs are now members of the Australian Automobile Association (AAA) established in 1924.

Old - Twelve motorists formed the Automobile Club of Queensland in 1905 at a meeting of “almost all the motorists in Brisbane” which was held at the School of Arts, in Ann Street. The club received its Royal Charter in 1921. The club was formed as an advocacy group, styled after the successful Royal Automobile Club of the United Kingdom. At the time of formation there were only 16 registered privately owned motor cars in the whole of Queensland.
Eighteen local motorists eventually agreed to be foundation members. Half were doctors; their belief that "autos" could be a reliable means for visiting patients.

NSW - The RACA was established in March 1903 in Sydney, and is the oldest motoring club in Australia ...... used to provide roadside service and insurance but
in 1945 in an agreement with the NRMA, ceased offering these services with members gaining reciprocal access to NRMA provided services.

Vic - Automobile Club of Victoria was founded in 1903 .....In 1916, the club received the approval of King George V to prefix the title "Royal" to its name.

SA - The Royal Automobile Association of South Australia, also known simply as RAA, began as The Automobile and Motor Cycling Club of South Australia in 1903.

WA - In 1905 the Automobile Club of Western Australia as it was then known, was formed by a small group of enthusiastic car owners ..... for social purposes, such as picnic runs and reliability trials, and also to overcome the hostility of a community that still depended on the horse for road transport.

Tas - The Royal Automobile Club of Tasmania, normally abbreviated to RACT, was established in 1922.

Thank you DJ, RET and Ken for the information and pictures.  Ken I found the picture. I will try our library and see if they can get The Crown of the Road in on loan.

Further to RAC badges.

I had a look at another heavy cast badge I have since the bears were bad and always assumed it was an old RACQ badge.  Looking further - around the outside it reads "ROYAL AUTOMOBILE CLUB-ASSOCIATE MEMBER".  The badge is 90mm diameter. It has a 3/8 stud on the bottom for mounting on a vehicle. In the centre of the badge is an 30 mm diameter enameled badge with a cross an an crown.  The outside of this badge has the wording "ROYAL AUTOMOBILE CLUB OF QUEENSLAND"

Also on a flange above the mounting stud there is a stamped number which I assume is the membership number.   The number in this case is A9798. The badge is quite ornate.

I will post a picture when I get a chance.

Keith, you will be lucky to find the book in a library, it was published in 1983. I got this copy at a swap meet.

Thanks Ken for the heads up of possibly not being able to obtain the book.  an interesting thing is that on my iPad the book pictures are orientated correctly however on my windows laptop and PC they are upside down.

Also found an oval RAA (SA) badge.  Looking at data it is 1959 - 1974

I went to our local library this morning and asked about The Crown of the Road book.  A search revealed that there are 38 copies in libraries thorough Australia.  Our state library has one which means that there will be no charge for an inter library loan.  I was warned that just because it is listed does not give a 100% guarantee that it is there.  I have put in a request for a loan.  Anybody else who may be interested in reading the book might check with their library.

Car badges could be an interesting topic.

I picked the book up from the library today.  Looks like some holiday reading.  A brief look through it shows that it could be a good read.

I have finished reading the book now and found it a very interesting read.  It really shows how much things have changed over a century.  Having a 1929 vintage car for the last 40 years myself I can appreciate how things were back then.  We really have life sweet now compared to then.  For anybody with a little interest in the evolution of motoring in this Country I can thoroughly recommend getting this book from the library.  Thanks again Ken for the heads up on the book

Further to the RACV.  I was unaware the the Royal Pines Resort on the Gold Coast was owned by the RACV.  It is only 15 minutes from my daughters place.  We had an occasion to go there this this morning.  She gave me for Christmas a Segway ride operated by an organisation who hires space at the Club.  Very enjoyable ride.  The resort is decorated in the yellow, blue an white colours of the club.

They look good - what's the NRMA doing is SA?

Dave, I was also picking up ones from the sister clubs, in the second pic there is RACQ, RAC Tasmania, RAC Victoria and NRMA.

Also have a great book written for the 100th anniversary of the RAA in 2003 called " Rebel on Wheels ".

I did a little research on NRMA badges a few years ago, looking for the one that suited an FC from Sydney.
I found a wealth of really interesting motoring history behind these. I'll look out for the book.
