Well i finally tracked down a ute i was happy with.
1 owner been in a shed for 45 years so im told.
was blue and was re painted red 47 years ago supposedlly.
No rust anywhere in the car he filled it with an oily waxy stuff around the tray and fuel tank. all inner outer sills are excellent, spare wheel door and hinge are excellent,
has a heap of parts he collected. he has pulled it from the shed in the last 3 months and had brakes re sleeved in S/S and has fitted new exhaust,
Car is ready for rego grille chrome is tatty.
Scratch plates are original in good nick and he chopped the rear venetian for unknown reasons.
A friend went and checked it out in Mackay for me as i couldnt get there
So she is all packed waiting for transport.
He removed hubcaps and anything that could be taken or fall off.

To make sure its roadworthy and my mate that does all the 50,s looking signage is going to do a cool looking logo for the doors ect.
Ill see what its like when it gets here i may lower it a bit but dont plan on cutting it up or anything drastic..

Dont know how that one got past me, in my own back yard so to speak. Haven''t even seen it on the road here the closest looking one was in a ford dealers here but it looked a little more orange than this one. Great find!

Yes slow for all the contract and supply company's. Our blokes are busy though doing all the work we probably should have in the first place. I know just at our plant we have lost over $20million out of our maintenance budget and they have increased the production so in the end the machines wear out faster but we have less money to spend ont the repairs.
Hopefully within the next 6-8 months things will settle down.

Sorry The fe ute on ebay doesnt look that good up close in my opinion very clean no rust but i didnt think it was worth the money. but thats my thoughts.
I bought the one from QLD Which after getting here is about the same if not a little better in my opinion.

Well i picked up the ute and took it up to the smash shop to get polished i was hoping it came up as good as the FE sedan i bought :P
We pulled the floor up and took the rear timber floor cover out lots of parts lots of fish oil but no rust .
Some mint doors some not so mint
tons of starters
generators winders, oil filters for grey, and a few L series blocks and a lot of other parts most of the spare chrome is pitted and not very useable.
with the way work is i dont know weather to hang of till i get the sedan done or bite the bullet and do it to.
I was made an offer to full strip down and respray today for a heap of waterjet cutting.
I have a disc front end , hot 186 never started, Auto with stally, HR diff, simmons, all door rubbers, so undecided what to do????
Ill see what a polish does but id say ill do the whole rebuild i really like the new Astra dark green i really dont go much on red motors but i have one with new extractors, and holley, roller rockers knife edged crank,electronic ign,alloy rocker, new cain manifold all sitting in the loft never used....

He then drew it better on A3 paper we imported into the neighbours sticker machine and hey presto.
Couldnt be more happy.

Got everything bead blasted etch primed painted black.
Callipers were taped up ear plug in the hole beadb blasted and some metal clear coat we use on brass plaques sprayed on them to keep em pretty.
Heatproof paint on calliper bracket.
Rotors all ordered just got to go pick up pipe and nipples to make all my own brake lines look pretty.

Last nights job what a prick that was.
The mill was too loud to start up at night as we have new neighbours
Need to machine the flats on the top shaft.
I drilled and tapped main shaft to use 2 m3 nylon bolts for the shear instead of alloy rivets.
Made the column a little taller than a ek one still seems to short with a bus wheel.
This is a job i wont be doing again for people.
Just to many liabilites if something stuffs up ill leave it to someone else.

Got all the autometer ultra lights out from the sedan for the ute.
Made a new under dash guage holster to suit the bigger guages looks a little stretched but its only 15mm taller than the stock style will look better than the cups bolted under the dash.

HAHAH Yep that's what I meant. You are most welcome to put pretty plates with radiused corners too. Engineer requires at least 65mm x 45mm x 3mm thick.
Ps I have found that using google chrome that if I click on Show unread posts since last visit and shut it down, it show new posts when I open it again but if I then do it on another computer it shows I have looked at em all...

Got the motor all mounted today.
Sat down down and thought id check the old sump and found some nice fragments so i stripped head and dropped pistons out found a broken ring scored bore and a heat spot in number 1 .
1 of my dumb arse burnouts id say when i was a young bloke i remeber getting it very very hot one time doing a burnout so i cant really complain. >:(
So im not spending any more cash on it at the moment so im just going to drop the HR front end in i have thats fully recod,my recod trimatic i was given, that big dollar 186 i have, stock steering with a set of drop spindles that im not using now.

Ill add more picks of radiator support looks really clean and uses most stock components to get the VL 5 litre radiator in there.
Only problem was the gearbox was a VS computer thingo majigo model so i got a VN kick down model getting a shift kit and stally installed..
Have designed my own chassis kit so we will see how it pans out..

The race is on i reckon im not far off him.
I think in total i have spent under a day on the whole conversion thats diff column radiator support the lot.
So hopefully next weekend i can have a whole day to get stuck into it.
Hope to have steering sorted this week was going to recces engine 30mm but may not need to now.
Ill fit a HQ water pump and pulleys i gain 20mm more for fan shroud that way.

They do fit easier but frig their heavy.
Today i was off crook so gearbox went to the specialist up the road thats his thing and he owes me favours.
I ordered B&M alloy pan for the TH700 also ordered 2500 B&M stally, corvette servo, speedo cable allready made to suit TH700 to FC offa dude in melbourne, full transco shift kit, bracket for my new pro ratchet shifter,6an fitting for oil cooler, PWR external oil cooler, fuel pump.
Hopefully cut and install chassis kit on the weekend..

Yeah I will be interested to see how mine goes with the added weight. It will be nice if you can get another one going. Why is the mig wire better than normal tig rod. What gas do you use when tigging steel, just same stuff as the mig, will that do. There is another pure argon for tig I think. What u think.

Wasnt happy with putting a old hadfield kit in the FC so i sold it and the HR front end and made these us this morning just for something different.
Should piece together nicelly.
Dunno what the engineer will say but im happy so hopefully hes happy.
ill make a pretty looking gearbox crossmember and re bate it into the rails.
Trying to find motivation to smash the second one but they are time consuming and difficult to keep square.
real easy to draw a bitch to assemble. about an hour each.

I am trying to get into the old spirit of the 70's rebel hot-rodder and just build the bloody thing. All of this crap and regulation really got to me. I feel liberated now, dunno why, but all the blokes at the hot rod club have done it this way and it all turns out in the end, as long as the quality is right.

My question is how many are running thermos on the front ?
They are stepped off the core 15mm ?
I have ran a 16 inch single before without any dramas i know they are more effiecent on the rear but they will be mounted on the drawn bracket at the bottom that will be welded to the radiator frame.
Im getting the lower spout moved up like a VK core.
should have just used a VK radiator. But i had this VL 5 litre one in the shed.
Everything fit sweet as and i have hidden the radiator which is what i wanted to achieve.

I'm running a 10" and a 12" on the back of the radiator so no gilmer drive for me :'(. Have to spread em wide too as the water pump would fowl on the fan. Only room I have in front of the radiator will be for the Air con condenser and the receiver drier.

The way i see it fan shrouds caust lack of natural flow when driving causing the fan to come on more than normal and the flow lost with a air con condensor i think i should be right.
I think if you run HQ water pump and pulleys you will gain nearlly 20mm.

Pete, I tried a few configurations and in my case twin 10 inch thermos on the front were not sufficient.
In the end a shrouded engine fan was perfect, with twin thermos on the front that would kick in at certain temp. I wired them in to the ECU to come on as if AC was on.. so there was a temp set point and at certain speeds.
with that set up it could idle through Sydney CBD during peak summer without the needle on the temp gauge moving... a hi flow Milodon thermostat was also installed.
the rad was a 4 row, cut down to fit under the bonnet latch panel with torana tanks.

I ran what I think is a 16 inch thermo fan on the front (covered all of the radiator), I didn't think it was enough because the car kept over heating in traffic. I finished up installing an engine fan which made a huge difference and it was running within the temperature range but would occasionally still spit out a bit of coolant. A bit of mucking around but I finally worked out that the thermo was cutting in very late in the heat range, so I just hard wired it and it runs all the time at the moment ( a bit noisy) but still on the hottest of days can loose a bit of coolant.
My next job is to pull the radiator out and convert it to a recovery system, install a new thermo fan and to put a shroud on the engine fan / radiator, hopefully this ticks all the boxes and there will be no more issues.
I bought a Haltech 1000 series computer so it has all the out puts for fans ect so ill set it too cut in at a happy medium.
Was your fan hard on the radiator or stepped off ?

Took the radiator in to get modified.

Gearbox arrived back today heavy duty bands, alloy pan, corvette servo and pin, manulised, cant wait to get this thing running..

They sent the wrong one they were out of stock of the compact model single blower 2sp its roughly 200x200x100 tiny
Got my gearbox back today showed me it was pretty rooted basket was stuffed stripped drive gear for something.
Corvette servo and pin arrived.
Left old pan on till I get it running.
New pans in the pic.
Also machined the bit the column will locate in at the bottom.
Both rails tacked up, I need to modify them as im not happy with them hard against the floor it will be a moisture trap.
So ill notch them a bit to clear the rear pan.
All in all a productive day.

I dont like overlapping hence why I cut it out.
Is it gunna be column shifter. I am gunna use a b and m shifter cable for the column to select on the t700.
Ill use the little pro ratchet shifter I have paint it up old school.
Finally did some work on the UTE lifes bloody hectic so cars have been on the backburner. (and doing others bit and pieces)
Rolled a new tunnel and swaged it.
Modified the firewall a bit in the process.
Started manufacturing a new pedal box assembly.

I just made a lucky dip column vk lower fc upper pinned with m3 nylons.
Old mate round the corner does exhaust s let me loose flared a bit machined it worked good.
Thanks for that Pete, it looks very neat. You did a good job flaring the pipe, I had a local exhaust guy flare some pipe for me but he couldn't get it anywhere near as neat as yours.
I had to machine it afterwards was a little on the piss.
I machined an inner and welded an end into it then i pressed it into the flared section. A little overboard but looks neat.

Must have been shitfaced when I cut that out.
So I cut sections from my bitsas and got the end of the rail swage shorter so they look like they end properly.

Reminds me when i put a 350 auto (two speed power glide fast and faster) in the 1984 Holden shuttle work van. Drove it on normal 4 cyl reg until it passed away. Looked like a sleeper and had a single exhaust. Quiet but you could still tell by the note it was a V8. Took it to police stations without an eye blinking. Even had an accident in it once (not my fault) and the assessor even didnt pick it up. Ah the good ol days.

My question is, why not just weld them in?
Then have a hadfield type set up on the front to be able to get the front end off... I say only type as you have the skills and the tools to make it so much better.

I still think its more of a challenge to do it this way planning on blasting and painting under it now to tidy it up so being removable will help.

Your skills with metal are outstanding. Makes my chasis look cheap and nasty. I chose to bolt mine in place and add internal box section to prevent crushing when bolted up tight.

I spent 15 years doing many of these chassis kits . Most were only welded in at the front and rear and made from rhs or shs . Those that were cut from 150x50 rhs and profiled to the floor pan[ note that no matter how original every pan is different] and welded the full length run the risk of the floors bending [provision must be made for fuel and brake lines at the drivers side rear because engineers usually don't allow them under chassis]. Front subframe 'y' sections usually stiffened with triangular plates this can interfere with the operation and installation of the original handbrake and speedo cables and full width gearbox mounting sections make exhaust shops pull their hair out . Its many years ago now but when I fitted the 5 speed in my van I welded rhs along both sides of the lifted gearbox hump from the subframe to and tapering off at the hat section at the high part of the floor under the seat[this point is where a cross brace might go between rails if placed high enough to go above or around looping the tailshaft] . This not only allows room for the exhaust but plenty of gearbox mount options. Just a thought mate . When I do this I usually get pages of arguments. Cheers

Its not too heavy 4mm sheet but if you look its curved both ways it also has a 120mm of flat in the middle for gearbox mount.
im contemplaiting doing a round thru section for the pipes too. buti need to get motoring.
wasnt as easy as it looks so when you look under the car everything is parallel to the sills.

I normally tig everything but too much heat with the tig bends stuff the wrong way.
those welds on the mount are tig with filler but inside welds are mig.
I can see you prefer the TIG. Having the knowledge & skills to apply the ideal mix of applications only comes from experience gained over a half lifetime.
Something that I've wondered about - how did you calculate the leveraged downward forces on curve where the mount is?
Rang laurie at chop shop to see what maximum offset is their rule of thumb never over 8 inches even if curved mines 7 from gearbox bolts to back of member.

Hi Pete, great work as always. I have a serious question of sorts. I can see how the furthermost front section with the triangular plate (at front frame) should greatly increase the torsional strength under high torque loads, adjacent the bell housing area), similar to torsion rods at the top of engine bay etc for drift type setups (funny cos the load is less drifting cos ure not putting down power as efficiently to the ground ???), anyway, This makes the rear mount way capable of its job of supporting the trans weight etc. I cant wait to see how you might tackle (if required and I am not sure if this was an engineered item that you are doing) tying the left and the right together adjacent and forward of the bell housing area. With a solid front end there is plenty of rigidity there to support the twist. But I am staying tuned to see whether you have considered a verical arrangement for the actual engine load transfer. I remember crudely years ago in Adelaide welding chain on the torque side to alleviate going through engine mounts :D :D :D. How crude of me ey! But it worked on the 351 and a much heavier car. Should I just wait and see, or is it in your opinion dependent on the application the car is used for. I just want insight into how your brain works. I know NES has tried and failed for years to do that, but I have been watching this with interest as I am using a 700 trans too and have been thinking of different ways of tying in strength from the bell housing forward for the torsional twist. Im sober by the way. :D

HUH? Tried and failed on what exactly? My Verical arrangement - as in the vertical load transfer to the horizontal plane is through standard V8 engine mounts - the same as specified by Holden right through to the GTS Spec in 2000. The Fabricated steel mounts on the crossmember are the same as the ones I had when the V6 was sitting in it and
thus have never changed.

Are you referencing my Gearbox? I have only ever had one verical arrangement on that one too, the bloody big loop that goes over the top as engineered by Pat Gardiner which suited both 4L60E gearboxes behind both V6 and V8 engines AND uses a standard VN V8 rubber mount.
My smooth efi V8 wont twist like a 351 leaded carby mongrel either. I am NOT building a monster engine like Pete. My 220kw in 1100kg will do just fine thanks.
Further, my engineer is more than happy with what has been done as the Steel mounts on the Crossmember are thicker than the standard VT.
My torsional twist is within expect limits as per my engineer so I really don't know what I failed on ???

And my theory of having 2 grey motor powered old girls wasnt practical .
I wanted something to just get in and go anywhere.
It wasnt what it was meant to be fully recod brakes were stuffed maybe fully recod 40yrs ago but were meant to be S/S sleeved they werent.
Motor was meant to be tight as and was smokey old low comp girl
Suspension needing everything doing.
Was happy with the body but by the time i do brakes engine box suspension there wouldnt be much change from 6 or 7K so i figure i had the VS 5.0l which owed me roughlly 1K and fully reco box owes me 1700 diff free so far but id say $500 for axles brakes all recod owe me $900 with all new DBA rotors recod callipers tailshaft $250 radiator $240 ect ect

That’s the worst attempt at justification I’ve seen in a while, is that how you sold it to the wife? Just face it Pete, you love cutting up stuff and putting it back together in a much better, way cooler form ;D ;D ;D
P.S. I think I have sold my projects to better halves (and myself) using the exact same logic and rationale as you many times before, must be some form of illness - better look into that...

Tailshaft came back yesty dearer than the last one that i picked up 2 months ago nearlly double so must of used gold filler wire or something? he didnt know why the other was so cheap?

That photo is about as fuzzy as my head this morning good pub dinner tho.
Might get stuck into the rails weld them up and fit the crush tubes this weekend so its all done.
Came up with a solution to stop my hatred of the bannanas on the top of the engine so i ordered a harrop dual plane manifold with a aeroflow billet throttle body and machined injector ports into it so it will run a top mount air cleaner now but still retain the injection.
As dean said i just wing it as i go.

Mate , those rails are beautiful ,seriously .I spent 15 years putting many dozens of rails under mostly FX-HR .Some were cut to profile the floor and others went level through the way you have done but none I have seen are as neat or look as easy to fit as yours . I know that they were a lot of work to get to this ,but if I was looking for a set of chassis rails I'd be asking you to make them or at least stealing your design . Joking ? Cheers Haydn

I was tossing up weather to get someone to do the exhaust but i might give it a go i allready cut all the flanges on the waterjet and i did part of the exhaust on the FB on the cover of street machine.
Maybe steel headers HPC coated so they dont crack and the rest in stainless dunno havent really thought about it.

When we did extractors we got the engine plates CNC and just bought the bends at our local exhaust shop and made them on an old engine block on the engine stand with the heads bolted on , but we had spare subframes ,crossmembers and could dummy up all of the engine bay . With the Vauxhalls I just bought complete second hand sports exhaust systems off ebay and modified them myself. The first was V8 commodore and the second was Nissan skyline . I think you could handle something like an exhaust no probs. Cheers Haydn

I have a mate specalising in LS conversions hes just done a VX big 88mm single turbo it made 790rwhp on its first run and the timing wheel on the crank or something has moved .
But should be good for over 1000rwhp
another bloke is doing a 100mm turbo on a LS427 into a VH
and hes also got a Ls6 into a VK
and i cut my own style of tough mounts for LS into a LH they are doing.
I also have windage trays , header plates, intake manifolds for LS i have been doing for him.

As for the ute yeah its got a little out of hand some big things yet to come.
Pete, strange you say that about the timing wheel moving. My son just built one of these motors for a friend and they dynoed it Monday. Their wheel also moved. Apparently anything pulling this sort of horsepower they are spot welding the wheel. He was working on it last night. Motor has to come back out and also crank.

4am start couldnt sleep
All morning straightening rear panels.
Re radiused corners
Straightened where screw heads were.
Ran a step drill threw them all to re round the holes.
Re gapped every edge
Also fitted knurled high quality nutserts with the hydraulic gun.
Could get them all bar 8 so I had to use a hand one to get them.

You can send your floor pieces to the powder coaters to get the wood grain finish, just an option. Not one that I would do but if you like the look then why not! ::)
For anyone after another handbrake option to the under dash type .
I ordered a lokar fully adjustable handbrake setup with adaptors for corvette /commodore brakes.
Cables come in 96in lengths just cut to the desired length.
A small slot is all thats needed next to the drivers seat.
All bought from summit they do under dash ones as well but not what im looking for in the ute.

...and I'm going to Cable-Mate to sort out a handbrake cable. The handbrake was a bit of a headache to install - the previous floor mount had to be butchered for the Lokar setup to fit.
Doesn't look to be much difference between those and a corolla handbrake from your local wreckers . Someone might find this interesting. The ends on the commodore cables are identical to my 1960 VW beetle which has two separate cables ,left and right similar to LC-LJ torana with them being longer on the left hand side and the front being threaded rods .Obviously the VW is metric and the Torana is UNF. Just right if anyone is putting a commodore diff in a torana . Anyway, back on the subject .I would just fit a early jap centre handbrake lever by cutting a hole and welding a predrilled plate with captured nuts into the floor to strengthen it then take my commodore cable somewhere and get it shortened or remade . Guys I am using the commodore centre handbrake as I used the whole commodore floor hump in my sedan.
I used the commodore cable, cut it so that I had the right length and then took it to a company called Flexible Drive Agencies the branch here in Perth sent it to their big workshop in Melbourne and they made me a complete new cable including outers cost about $260 I think, fits up great and works well.

Yeah, Flexible Drive are here in Brissy also . They were handy when they did work from there shop at Coopers Plains while you waited , but now they send all their work to Melbourne . Means two trips of over one hour each . But my only advice is to go to the wreckers and get a simple centre pull handbrake [most jap cars],mount it on the floor , go to your hardware store and get a turnbuckle and bolt it to a clevis for adjustment then hook your handbrake cable on one side and mark the length on the other side with some masking tape and take it to flexi drive and they can put an end at the correct length . As for that commodore floor and hump and handbrake ,last time I put a commodore floor in a FC I found it slightly narrow and had to leave some of the existing floor at the sills so when I welded the floor in the hump was too high at the dash and looked hideous . So I'm guessing that your floor is welded lower down your sills or as I did section the hump at the front . I would not use a commodore handbrake on a early floor pan , there are better ones out there. Haydn

That's a real tidy setup, I like the way they have taken the headers down between the engine and chassis rail. I think it looks a hell of a lot neater than going through the inner guards. The whole package looks like it was meant to be there.

I just had a look at the Summit handbrake setup as well it looks really good and as you said simple to fit I think I will use it on my next project.

My helper was late. So I only got 1 side almost finished.
Other side is cut out and prepped for tub.
Took 2 hrs of snipping and trimming to get it to fit spot on.
Rhs fully welded in.
Only have a half done photo its too hot and im to lazy to go back over to the shed.
The inner overlaps rail 20mm and is plug welded hence the grinding marks.

Arrrgghhh usual problem just not happy so change something then it snowballed.
Sounds familiar, I think quite a few of us on have gone down that path start doing a quick tidy up and end up doing a full rebuild, frustrating at times but all worth it in the end. :) :)

We went into the fuel filler area a bit but im not too concerned as im making a solid pipe and will have a bolted flange thru the body to seal the back then flexible to the tank.

I have to cut up my nice gearbox crossmember so i can get the exhaust to clear so i cut some nice U shapes on the waterjet the will go over the top of the exhaust so i dont have any hanging bits.
Also cut some rings that are drilled and tapped and step 2 350W 2 way woofers into the doors 20mm step back so we can do a nice door trim to hide the speakers as i dont want any modern grills mounted on the front.
I will dyna mat all the insides of the doors so i get a good sound.

I am going with the 17's as well... But staying with the standard 3.08 ratio.
17x9/10's on the back prob 285/40. On the front 17x7 225x45 to keep the rolling diameter the same for the ABS.

5 minutes on the ute
Im doing the tray i am going to divide it into 2 sections so i made a mullion thats switchboard talk for divider and i made a new front section so all 3 are the same width.
the front section im not going to cut off the ute but im going to have a fold meet a fold so its a nice rolled edge stich the seam together under it. this is how we join sheets doing switchboards.
And for anyone stuck i can get the exact same folds as a UTE tray which is very tight and not many press brakes can fold that tight its 24mm inside and 12.9mm inside for the height making it 14mm OA

And i welded up stiffener under it so my fat arse doesnt bend it if i sleep in there.

Next is the gearbox crossmember
I have been dreading this job .
So I cut radiused bits giving me 30mm of meat around the cutout and 25mm of clerance around the exhaust.
So I have radiused the hoops to follow the curve in the roller.
Also I cut and spliced them into the crossmember.
I will weld the top section and finish it off.
Then I will cut the lower section and weld a half round into the space.
Should not see any movement that way.
No hanging exhausts this way.

Diff back in gearbox crossmember fits really well and clears exhaust.

No guillo and no powered rolls make me lazy.
removed exhaust ready to be jet hot coated.
Rolling a U section is a lot harder than it looks didnt enjoy that bit..

I know the whole hq pattern rim onto commodore is a no no but my rims are multi stud so im thinking p76 blank rotors and redrill HQ and new axles on rear will be HQ pattern and modify disc on rear to suit..
Dunno havent got that far yet i will sort it when rims arrive..
Some pretty billet cnc machined rocker covers arrived I really dont like the stock ones much .
Rear floor sections folded and has double return with radiused edge not an easy thing to do properly.

Rang to order a harrop crank only to be told 10 month wait there out of stock.
So I had a mate with a brand new scat crank and scat H beam rods chev journals.
He had pistons but there 8.5 to 1 comp so if anyone is after a brand new set of JE pistons he had a set.
So I ordered chev 383 forged floating pin short skirt 12.5 to 1 JE pistons.
I also got a set of 8 bosch LS 6 litre injectors 28thou ks on them so im modifiying my injector rail height to run these as we are running the car on E85 now so i needed stainless tipped injectors.
Also im cutting booster plate out and have gone a wilwood set up.
so hopefully i can get back into it in the coming weeks.

Big day I now have a awesome working handbrake with all the cables hidden no big y section.
I cut a section out and installed a flat section I also swaged it so it follows the factory section on top of the sill.
I cut a alloy boot cover routered a radiused edge ready to chrome.
Also made 2 rings to reccess 350w alpine woofers into the door so their hidden no modern looking covers.

The dash is running a haltech digital display has everything all in one oil,temp,rpm,data, speedo. ect i swaged it on my own at about 11pm was a really really hard job to do on my own.

I also like to see what you are doing .The metalwork is awesome . Just thought you might be interested in this handbrake set-up as reference material. This is my Vauxhall [Bedford] chassis .The rear axle is lc lj torana ,therefore the cables are different lengths and the rest is standard Vauxhall [Bedford] under dash handbrake but could have been easily used to relocate a centre pull or beside the bench as you have done .Say for example you were running a set of chassis rails and a different gearbox crossmember and were struggling with adapting a hand brake cable for a commodore rearend to std. front cable. You could use VW beetle rear cables with this lever and a FE,FC front cable .Just thought you might be interested as you seem to be someone who can think on there feet.

Its not that i was struggling its more i wanted to hide any ugly cables from around the chassis rails my sedan is the same im using lokar cables for it too so i can hide them in the chassis rails and i am using a toyota hiace handbrake top section to hide it.
im really impressed with the lokar set up it fits beutiful and is hidden would definetly go that way again.

Bought 2 of these phanton aeromotive fuel system s they are awesome simple hole saw hole and fit the whole unit has fuel proof foam swirl pot set up .

A big effort got the big girl up and running.
rear wheel bearing looked shagged and had taken out the oil seal so lucky i fitted a new bearing press in the shed a few months ago so new wheel bearings and seal, we also put a new non greasy set of pads in her.
A huge thanks to my mates for finding a good box from a VQ statesman.
we fitted a kit thru it.
new ATF
swapped convertors
lowered the car onto the box with the hoist.
When those 2 dowels slide straight into the box you know your gunna have a good run bolted her all up ...
Adjusted shifter cable and he was good to go.
Learnt a few tricks off Craig.

For the ute im running these 17x7 and 17x8 with police centre caps there sorta a bullet shaped cap
they are like a big flywheel FC427 told me they are heavy but dammm they are heavy.
In our order from the states we had 4 pro stars and 1 rim is equal to 4 pro stars :o
Stud pattern is ford/HQ whatever that is in yanky land.
I would stick with your stockies they look fine as cost my price was 1K delivered 4 rims 2 sets on centre caps baby moon and police caps and dress rims.
wheels are under $200 but freights a killer as they weigh so much..
Was hoping to get stuck into the ute this weekend but i had to cut strainers and wood all day for the inlaws.

Nice little cam you have there Pete.Are the specs on the box for 1.6 rocker ratio or 1.65 that you have on your rollers?Puts you just under 500 thou at 1.65.I couldn't find the rev range specs but should be nice on the street.Cheers,Jamie.

should be streetable with the injection.

. The cam specs on the sticker of the cam boss are actually for 1.5 or 1.6 rocker ratio but the website has them for 1.65 On the box it's say .490 lift or something but its actually about .525 odd
Hes dynoing a LH torana tommorow with that cam harrop dual plane manifold stock heads with a 750 carb so will be intresting to see what numbers it makes..
Mine should make more with the come heads and injection...
Back on the ute today
the firewall has been pissing me off i hated it just didnt look right so called in the big guns to cut the firewall out.
Aaron came and gave me a hand and did all the major cuts as he does em every day i was just the gopher today.
He absaloutley smashed it today we got the whole lot done in 8hrs using one of my booster recceses huge thanks to the boys for helping 4 blokes and a carton of largeys got it done

Subframe has took me a week on and off to seam weld clean up all the holes re nutsert the rails on the y frames.
Trial fitted a mates engine as mine is just a block.
Probably overkill on the reccess but I want easy access to the dizzy and it looks cool.

Hey Pete, are you still ok for reg. Vic laws (not sure about others) are about to change for club reg. Not sure of all the ramifications yet but obviously wont affect already engineered registered vehicles. Knew this would eventually happen that's why i went down the path of having it engineered.

Spot welded thru 2 holes on every high spot something to tie the wiring too as studs are a pain in the backside.

Worth the wait on the wheels Pete, even with all the pissing around you're enduring.
I think with a small centre cap in 17inch they will be real subtle should look nice. (hopefully)

Todays project well it took me 5min to draw slight stuff up so I have to modify it a bit but I knocked up a pedal box.
I machined the bushes from brass and cut the pedal arm from 6mm mild

Was in a hurry today so not many pics
I finished the pedal box
Machined a tube and welded to the top of the pedal arm
Machined brass bushes pressed them into the pedal arm .
Then machined a 3/4 pin and welded the lock tab on .
It fits perfect really happy with it feels really solid.

ps VT is a bolt straight unit as JB will also support (for others) unless you have a recessed booster like Pete (and you get the double diaphragm booster 4:1 and quick refill master for twin piston callipers).

I wasnt happy how the front cover latch assembly finished with a raw edge so i shrunk everywhere where it was "puckered" and extended it 15mm the i cut it so it has a 15mm offset arc then welded a 5mm round bar to the edge and smoothed it in.

So front end and all the grille shed ect are going to blaster tuesday then off to paint.
I have been putting off the tunnel stiffener as it was going to be a bastard of a job so i cut 15mm strips and used the shrinker and stretcher to get the arc perfect then i welded them in and welded a strip in the centre of it . took some marking out as its tapered 2 ways.

Its saying my cars an FE ? Could it of had a different subframe fitted ?
But the grille assembly is really earlly FC it has chrome over steel slats ?

According to a bulletin dated 15 Dec 1958, the "FC" prefix started on vehicles after this date. So early FC's like this one had "8" prefix rather than "FC"

A few years ago at Toowoomba swap there was a guy selling ID tags by the hundreds . I asked him if it was legal to sell them and if he had any blank ones as the Vauxhall one is identical to the early Holden and mine has been mongrelled . I normally leave them soak in thinners for a few days and they come up like new .Haydn
No different to swapping a rusted out old front end really.
Exactly my thoughts JB. I did this with one of my cars. The front subframe had been smashed and was pretty much beyond repair when rust issues were added to the calculation. So to keep the car numbers original I cut the original subframe number out and welded it back into the replacement subframe.
I can't see any issue with this at all.
Also I can't see a problem selling old ID tags either, these are not even used for vehicle identification, more for in-house factory coding purposes.
Selling a subframe could be construed as more of an issue than selling a tag as the subframe contains a vehicle identity. No one that I've ever heard of has had a problem selling a subframe.
Buying and Selling number plates could be an issue. Not much of a problem if its just to hang on the wall. But if I was buying a set of number plates to actually use on a car (ie an old pair of black and whites) so that I could then buy that number plate as a personalised plate, and then be able to use the original old steel plates rather than the new aluminium ones then you would need to make sure they weren't stolen for instance.

An x-ray will show the chassis number has been welded in.
Another scenario .......... Someone steels your $30,000 fully restored FC, obtains an old rusted out paddock find, the type you see in pics here all the time, and swaps over the tags and welds in the chassis number into your stolen car, and re-registers it as a newly restored car.
Vic Roads (and other authorities) have to have some way of knowing what is stolen and what is not.
When I registered my Ute, I had no way of proving it was not stolen so Vic Roads simply accepted a signed Stat Declaration from me ...... too easy!!!
Last week i put my FE ute through an identity check as i purchased it from Vic, at our inspection station at regency park and the only numbers that were relevant to them was the engine number and chassis number (near the battery) not the ID plate on the fire wall.
But unfortunately they are to easy to rebirth.

Wasn't having a go .Chassis or body numbers are easy to change ,the x-ray wont work if you heat it up enough first ,then stamp your new numbers on before it cools . Be sure to destroy the donor set . My panel van has a sedan front clip [so sedan chassis no.] .Asked about old number plates as I have a few sets in my shed . When I put my van on club rego here in Qld ,rather than going special interest plates which have a s- prefix I opted for buying my old plates [much cheaper than P.P.]. The next question was if I could get the old plates off my shelf reprinted and use them and yes you can . You know that they are not already in circulation so you just ask for them as P.P Down the track I will do this as I still have the one surviving plate from the van that wasn't destroyed in the accident .
Unfortunately Guys this seems to be the only way we can sometimes bring our cars back to life the only issue is what has already been said about rebirthing.
I am not sure that my FC Sedans subchassis is original and the EK Ute project that I picked up recently did not come with a plate or a subchassis so I have had to obtain both which will make the ute whatever I decide I currently have an EK plate and subchassis and an FB of both it will probably depend on which is the better and then again the subchassis and plates are also from different cars.
As I said sometimes it is the only way.

The wifes going to QLD all next week with the kids and im not invited so wooohooo pub dinners and shed time all week should have it ready for blasting next weekend.
I have to get the EK van ready for the mud run so fuel cell lock the diff and front brakes that will take 1 day.
All the front subframe and grille shell and other bits were blasted and went to the painter yesterday and were undercoated.
Im also doing up full grille bolt kits in stainless steel for my car if anyone is after a set let me know they are socket head cap screws in stainless.
I doubt any bolt mob would beat my prices.

Its running a toyota one with a SU on it ended up running very well towards the end but damm its not a very pretty thing.
Also the bonnet clerance was non existant as it was mounted on the passenger side hence the oky straps.
Ill try dig up some pics.

I am trying to tee up with the blaster a day where its warm enough to do the body all the panels are ready to go the front clips all in under coat .
Really need to get the engine done so it can be primed and painted as well, still having a bastard of a time matching the paint colour i want but hopefully garry at autolac has it sorted now.

all the stainless trims are at shine bright trims in qld so will be intresting to see what they come back like .

Arp intake bolts are to long for a harrop manifold.

1hr on the ute today
Took the diff out made up a frame and set the rims up under the rear on the frame.
Cut another diff down 116mm each side so its going to need reliefs for the callipers into the rails.
Machined the outer bit for weld prep
Trued them up they were pretty straight anyway.
Will assemble it all tomorrow at work as I need to cut and fit saddles first.

I had to dummy assemble the standard width diff with axles and discs and measure that width.
then measure face to face of the wheels under the car so lets hope my edumecation paid off..

The way I'm thinking of of doing it for my ute is to tack the saddles on (when I get them ;D) using the measurements from my sedan and then putting the wheels on sliding it under the back onto the springs and then measuring what I need to take off to make sure I am completely under.
What do you think?
I think this is the easiest way for me as I dont have a jig etc.
Already got the old saddles etc off of the donor diff.

My jigs only 2 parralel lengths of rhs to hold the rims square
yours should be 88mm each side from memory you need to cut out of your tubes and put the join in the middle of the saddle.
peg to peg is 1mtr exactly for the saddles.

I nearlly started cutting last night but uif i dont get it finished it will hold up progress on the sedan next yr so the leafs stay for now.
It affect everything if i change to a 4 link exhaust, diff, chassis kit, ect ect so ill stay with leafs.
I want to take both cars to the nationals not very likely but thats my goal..
LOL, I have just been trying to get 1 car to a Nats for the last 5 years... Its amazing how circumstances change.
But it would be good to have them all there together... Even if the ute is down on horsepower. :P

The backing plate heavy pressed steel one fits the backing plates will fit also but will need the brake line clip removed as its umm close ..
cant remeber but the disc centre is around 10mm thick and the backing is 6mm and the axle is around 80mm theres going to be a fair relief section for the callipers i was going to rotate the disc down a bit but havent looked that far.
Came home crook with the flu
So hid in the shed and notched the rails for the callipers.
Everything is so bloody tight .
I can fit the factory backing plate if I cut the brake line clip off and fit to the diff.
Handbrake cable is very close to the diff saddle so I will put a small notch into the saddle.
Went and got a Tyre fitted fits very well.

Not going to weld the saddles for a sway bar while your there ? I just find its a little neater not to use "U" bolts .Cheers Haydn P.S. Love the attitude with the callipers and the subframe [ if its in the way cut it out ]
No room for a sway bar with a twin 3 inch system.
I prefer u bolt over bolting it in I reckon that looks neater looking.
Maybe its the age gap you have undone too many you bolts over the yrs :D
How about a pan hard bar? Read one of Alex's posts about hotting up early Holdens and the guy used a pan hard bar with great results.

I asked for a cream sample chip 15 chips turned up you would not believe the colour range as well as heat proof powders.
My whole exhaust except headers is done in oxytech satin black high temp powder looks fantastic.
They also have candy powders they are stunning in the light purples and greens.
Mine is Berry Grey sorry not notre dam the wheels are going toyota hilux white.
Scotty can send you colour chips for samples or sell the powder direct to your powdercoater. powders are like paint theres cheap and theres quality his are quality.
we started using his powders on our servce ute bodys we have been making. They have been in the coal mine 12months now and they have zero stone chips and looks fantastic everyone comments on the lustre and shine of the bodys.

I thought of digging a big hole with the excavator and lining it with plastic and chucking the frames in with some volts l. That would get the rust off everything best. But not sure what I should do if anything. What's your opinion.

I'm a bit jealous that you have a Ute. My plan originally was to do an fc Ute and an fe modified sedan like my blue one. But when I saw the rare original taxi with licences I had to have it. So I'm enjoying watching this one come together and the other fc utes.
Decided to cut the sills off go the whole hog
So we are guarenteed no rust can come back at us.
We found dirt build up but no rust it was holding moisture in the dirt.
Cut 2 inspections holes either side of the spare wheel door 1 piece of rare nasco flyscreen found.

Looks great. Have you seen many in your travels with permanent grommets for regular spraying in the sills?
All mine will have grommets in them under the kick plates to fish oil it.
The only place they missed on this car was the sills.
Bought a EH yesterday been in a shed for 30yrs been thru 2 people since original owner
A bloke bought it from the old fella stored it and didnt touch it then the bloke i bought it off got it off him
was stripped and painted underneath no rust 24 thousand genuine miles the cleanest body i have ever seen rear beaver sills rear 1/4s like brand new
interior very clean
Still has original paint just underneath re done.
Auto body 179hp hydromatic special grey and cream roof.
Will need painting he threw in disc front end and HR diff.
So god knows when it will get done couldnt leave it there tho.
That's cool. I like the 179 motor out of the reds if I had to choose one. Sometimes a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do and grab it while he can.

I got a call from Rares to say my new bonnet catch spring was in.
I'm feeling a bit left out with no calls 😖. But I've been getting a lot done and am cleaning up the 327 and all the oily bits from the 2 cars. It's progress but not of the blingy type. Opening newly chromed stuff could become an addiction.
Well it got the better of us the last of the cutting I dont want any surprises coming out from under the paint.
Blast at 9am tomorrow then seal it and start repairs.
Sand and fish oil yum what a mess the shit is everywhere gladly its the last of it.

I wish that was cocaine in the sills might of helped pay for the chrome , windows, diff.
Didnt make it to the blaster due to the rain.
So I spent an hr trying to nock the seat over.
Finished the top hat to clear the adjustment rod from side to side and the front section.
Cleaned up and weld thru primer under where I welded.
Hope to get last bit done tonight.

I am chasing an elusive EH ute in a shed near home original owner im going round in circles keep hearing about it just trying to track down the son..

Hey Pete. When it's like that with only small holes, would you drill them till thick then weld the holes or plate it behind and then fill. Sorta sucks when it's a catch 22. What's your advice in that situation.

I did a lot a small holes with a mig down low & 0.6 wire. It was a smaller area in the floor & the stop/start to control the heat was quite tedious, but it cleaned up very well. If you need to pump a lot of heat into areas that are very thin, a piece of 10mm brass plate pushed flat behind the weld side helps. It acts as heat sink & forms a solid backing that weld doesn't fuse to.
Yeah. I think I will get away with that apart from a small section in the inner guard. I want the inner looking as original as possible. But I wanted flush clean lines under the fe.
Ute is going on the chassis table friday and inners are coming out. :(
On a happier note all the extra effort re radiusing bumperettes and repairs paid off they are smick.

Old inners and outers are gone.
I got hold of a big hand held spot welder and dave re spot welded inners in with added welding looks factory.
Also new outers fitted.
Everything has been done twice really starting to get annoyed at the lack of care off some suppliers.
some of my chrome was sent back big bubbles in a few pieces.
Stainless trim 9 months later it supposedly done so pissed off the lies and bullshit I was fed about where they are up too.
Wants more money and im still not sure im even getting them. If they dont come back i shall be going for a flight to QLD.
Steering boss from classic industries was an ididit one ordered it off hulio.
No dramas it arrives no horn assembly I thought oh they stuffed up no I didnt order one with horn kit apparently even tho i asked for his recomendation.
Ok so i email classic industries how much for the horn kit?
Oh we dont do it seperate FFS
So i email IDIDT no we cannot sell it seperate.
So i re order a new one with horn kit $64 dollars US so the dollars down and freight was more expensive $219aus landed so nearlly $440 bucks to get my boss kit.

I'm sure I speak on behalf of us all when I say it is OK not to be "into it" sometimes, but don't let it get the better of you. Keep your chin up Pete, it would be a shame not to complete them after all the hard work you have put into them. I know how the pressures of work and family can effect the way things go from time to time, but just keep plugging away and you will get it done in the end.

Pete, some of us really wish we had as much motivation and can only ever aspire to achieving half as much to the same standard (pick me!).
I reckon setbacks typically hit when all other demands peak. Progress on the ute is a great read, look forward further updates whenever you can.

Dave wasnt happy with the gaps its all over the shop so hes chopping and cutting and bashing to get them right.
He cut 8mm off the door re did the lower skin and cleaned up the inner.
Neat as now perfect even gaps.
We have to cut the hoop off and move down 3mm tho.

thats bought it in a nutshell, block, feel, block, feel, block, feel, change to 240 grit... feel feel, rub through, swear, prime again, block block block, feel, block lighter, rub through again prime again with more primer to pick up some spots that feel ugly cos if it feels crap, it will look twice as crap.... start over till flat again...2 weeks later, maybe happy to final prime and final rub.... that bought the way it goes... and thats why it costs, but try educating someone that doesnt get it??? they ask "it cost how much??? all you did was sand it down and you took 2 weeks and changed me $2000??????" AHHHHHHHHHHH
the new sealer is now called "corrosion barrier" which is just a fancy name for epoxy again.

I scanned this one looked lighter on our sample board so i think this with all grey underneath and grey engine chassis ect white wheels should look clean and sorta original looking no bling here... :D

This car is the guinea pig for the sedan so far i have to find another stainless polisher also my chrome im not happy with so im up for another chrome shop so im hoping the paint comes out nice.

Yeah was recomended him by a few its pretty poor i thought for what i paid for. little blisters everywhere and it was very clean un pitted chrome i sent to them.
but then others said fern tree gulley wasnt any good either.
I will try the one DJ said or i will get tony from webbys speed shop to take it to his mate at hamilton chrome.
best i add that if there is no budget, then that is even more reason not to use debeers, as i said, its awesom if on a budget and you want that 70's factory look after a few months, but why when its not necessary.
too add to the chrome, FTG are probably still the best out of a shocking lot, they do chrome for rare spares in QLD and a fair few other shops, but the wait time is terrible. a few guys i know have been sending chrome to USA and it comes back quicker, nicer and cheaper than aussie platers. another well known car builder(no names mentioned)has been shipping parts to Taiwan, with excellent results, we have just "ticketed" and regulated ourselves to chrome death here in australia unfortunately

That's very disappointing to hear.
The turnaround time is probably quicker due to volume & maybe they don't have the same 'green' chemical rules imposed on our metro electroplaters, but what about added the shipping costs?.
That's a shame about the chrome Pete, as I said Vinnies did the bumpers on my HK wagon and they did a good job, I just got some stainless done for my EK by Carl Mills in Lismore, and he did a great job. He put some pictures on his facebook site of them. Dave
Hey Dave long time no chat.
After i spoke with you i went to pick up my van off brett and his chrome was very good as well so i thought no dramas.
The cad plating on the tailight backing and hinges is flaking all were bead blasted and prepped.
I sent the tailgate badge back it had a big bubble 1 end
And the headlight surrounds had bubbles and the underside had big blisters that were wafer thin not that the back mattered much also the lower bar had a few bubbles.
Been talking to Carl hes a very nice bloke indeed he will egt my sedan chrome to do.

I recognise those sanding discs, most of the dust misses the holes & the bag doesn't need emptying very often.
They do a good job though.

So i rang em up and she rattled of something about chrome being like cancer sometimes its got stuff hiding under the surface .

Of a night i have been rubbing back my caravan as blue and green shouldnt be seen (ffs if i hear that one more time i will snap ) massive effort to try straighten 60yr old plywood a bit.
Not much you can do unless i add a heap of bog =weight.
Me and a mate designed a flash kit.
So the edge is 316 grained stainless (protective coating in photo on stainless)
And behind we have stucco alloy sheeting.
I have one side finished but the cold weathers not giving me a good run.
So im at the paint shop today to use his booth.
Water based matte paint sprayed on with the gun.

Hi Pete, just wondering why you had the tranny tunnel seam sealed. Is it because it's a lap weld that's not fully welded top and bottom rather than a butt weld? I'll be installing my tunnel soon and checking out different ways of doing it. Really enjoying your build, thanks for posting.

For the dash top colour we tinted the blue 3 shades darker and added flattening agent.

The clear on the ute was blocked back and the whole car re cleared to flow coat it .

The boys tried the wheels on today.
Note it has the wrong diff in it and the rear shackles are the wrong way around so it will go a lot lower.

Hoping over 400 at the wheels.
Well the FE has been taking all my time
But we got the springs and diff and steering rack painted.
Had to change the pinion angle so there went half a day so i added a nice little gusset .
I wasnt happy with the wheel colour so we stripped them and re powder coated a creamy cream as they had stuffed up and done them a toyota white.
Also the door rubbers are being a pain in the arse so we are persevering with a nice soft profile i found at the local rubber shop.
Should have it home the week after Christmas.

Steering all fitted very straight forward.
Column appears a little long but will not know until seat is fitted.
Im having the same issues as JBs v6 conversions front end coils are bound bad the springs are way too soft.
I thought being so much lighter they would be fine but they aren't.
So ryan at united speed shop got me a set of 350lb ones.
As jb stated they were marked as 250 but when tested they were 200lb.
Love the stance.
And even with it real low the tyres still clear the guard.

Well it's been ages covered up so time to start tinkering on the ute.
The FE is nearlly wired so hopefully some dyno time next week to run the engine in and get some figures then back full steam into the ute.
How things snowball.
Fitted injector rails and throttle body.
Also distributor ect.

Between Family life and work and winter i barely get out of to the shed of late.
We tried firing the FE last weekend everything worked great except the coils were wired arse about ::) wasnt me but a valuable lesson 6 new plugs needed hopefully it is all back together in a few weeks.
I have been fiddling on little bits of the ute.
I drive the wagon most weekends re wired the heater so it actually blows air now a lot better. the previous owner must of froze ..
It's been a while since I logged on so it looks like a lot of progress to me. The colour is very cool and the wheels too.
Working on carpet makes winter time more bearable
Got a few hours to myself
Fitted new diff cover and started making brake lines as the ones i had made were the wrong thread 😞

Did you front end come with a sway bar Pete? If it didn't, I would get one.
No it didnt but i left the mounting points in the subframe for that reason.
I have a plan to fit a sway bar.
Im very tempted to rip the front end out and change it tho making me cranky i would never buy another one thats for sure.
I knew about the one you had for the rear but not for the front. ;D
Had the same problem with the AVO shocks, kept chewing up bushes. I also changed to QA1 shocks and springs and haven't had a problem since. No wonder no-one wants to stock AVO's in Australia!

Same old story here not enough hrs in the day im struggling to find time to re assemble ute.
Cut up a 900 dollar radiator to make it fit properlly.
The inlet and outlet were on weird angles so chopped them off and fitted new ones with a doughnut on the lower to make it look pretty.
I have the tool to swage the necks to make them look factory.
I used a copper vk radiator to set up the car so i bought a pwr direct replacement and it was no where near direct replacement.
Lower pins were different and the necks also its slightlly taller
Should of stuck with copper but i wanted the alloy look.
Also Qa1 coilovers didnt come with spanners so i cut my own out.
Attached is a pic of the v6 conversion coil check out the bushes brand new never driven on completely collapsed.

Might have to fatten it up around where the bolt goes but its only a small alternator with a V belt

I had all intentions of running my new lenses in the guages .
U water jet cut the glass
Then laser etched it.
Broke 1 assembling it so lucky i had a spare and fitted that.
Woke up this morning and it was broken.
So i had a mint screen printed one so i fitted that.
I will have a new pair screen printed in the original pale green onto the glass.
Re oiled and got the speedo running sweet.
I really like the colours in ghe guages.

Hey Pete I see you are using the Haltech Sport 1000 is that a direct plug and play with the engine wiring harness or are you rewiring the harness I look on the website and I thought the GM one was direct plug in.
I've just finished freshening up a V6 that I got from Ebay that is pumping 227rwhp for my FB/EK ute project and missed out on getting the Haltech with it so if you or anybody has one just laying around I would be interested.

Its a full loom not a gm haltech as we only end up using 1/4 of the loom to keep it neat.
Same features i think tho.
Im running ice igniton with twin sensors ao i can run semi sequential injection.
Productive weekend
New alternator fitted
Bonnet hinges fitted
Some of the exhaust fitted.
I need to get it on the hoist to get the rear section on.
All rear panels fitted with a little cursing.
I fitted a new tv and big surround sound system as payback for the new neighbours 3 day party last weekend.
The v8s were on full song for 6hrs.

I have changed my mind 4 times so not real sure as yet..
Made These fiddly little buggers this arvy.
2 cut finger tips make them hard to hold to tap .
2 more to fit yet.

Works crazy so have only had real limited time on the ute.
Ordered a oil cooler for under the ute.
Their mounting kits horrible if you have ocd the fan sits on the piss 20 degrees and only uses 2 screws.

I made a bracket that will be powdercoated and goes between the inner sill and chassis rail.
I need to put a stone deflector over the core.
I ordered the pwr core with davies craig fan and temp switch that will utilise a output and relay from the haltech.

Heres one that pissed me off nearlly 28 bucks for wiper gaskets bugger that 26 seconds to cut on the waterjet.

And i found door stop rubbers the perfect size between bar and body 3.30 each and bolts under 3 bucks

Next i want to hide my guages as haltech will have engine protection so is only so i can see whatshappening on hot days.
So cut a spacer and guage mount to fit in speaker grille.
16mm ally cuts like butter.
Will powdercoat black.

A little more on the ute.
Speedo done.
Shifter cable done.
Exhaust fitted.
Oil cooler mounted.
Having dramas with the shifter bracket its ran out of thread so ill cuta new one 15mm different.
Also had a stuff up i ran the shifter cable out the side of the tunnel but the angle at the shifter stopped this working .
Turned out allright as it was in a perfect place for the speedo cable.
Just need to make the stone deflector for the oil cooler.
And rear exhaust tip hangers.

1 quick job at work for the morning new shifter bracket to sort out the adjustment issue.
I spoke to the dyno shop about the travel on a B&M pro ratchet and he tells me they have always been out of alingment if you do it as per the instructions.
So put it in low and adjust the pin on the box.
When you put it into park theoretically it should be loose and perfect but in fact its 3mm out so it therefore doesnt go into park properly so he sets them all up in the neutral position so its a happy medium.
I think i will re cut the bracket on the box with the shifter hole 2mm up that will make the radius smaller therefore giving me that 3mm im looking for. (I worked it out on solidworks)

Brake assembly all powdercoated and installed.
Vaccum line installed.
Booster all painted.
Another drama i have been dreading.
The column is too long so after 4 hrs i worked out how to disassemble a ididit column and shorted it.
All shear pins re installed the same .
I chopped 60mm out of it.

I dont like how original ones sit with where i have my heater core so i made this up today.
Finally got to use my shrinker and stretcher then ran the curves thru the english wheel to straighten out.
Fits perfect very very happy.

Yep i will cut a guard with a louvres so stones deflect off it also it has a 10 inch thermo on top pushing air down if the oil gets hot the sensor in the cooler triggers the haltech to turn it on.

You posted that you are making a stone shield and you have a cooling fan . Could cool air be deflected over the top and blocked at the rear so as to force air down through the fins with the right shaped deflector . Just something to think about for future projects . Very happy its loud dont think it would pass a noise test but i will just fit restrictor plates in the exhaust for engineering.

Looks dull as its bead blasted so the powdercoat has a profile to stickto.

Hi everybody
Just a few small things.
Powdercoating came back .
I fitted a high flow K&N element to the air cleaner .
Made a bracket to hold the coil which now hides under the air cleaner.
Lead brackets blend into the extractors making the leads dissapear very happy with them.
I had to drill the rocker cover thread out to fit the breather. That was daunting. Hope it works as it looks smick very happy with it.

Very nice Pete .. Hows that wiring coming along looks like a bit of a headache... Have you been able to get out a bit in the wagon and van .??.. Today would of been a ripper day down here for a cruise.. When its a nice day it alway makes me think of every one and their completed cars.. hopefully enjoying the shit out of them.. ;D

I havent started the wiring .
I have changed my mind 10 times how im going to do it..
Today was rainy and overcast so cleaned the shed and played with the kids.
I havent been out much at all works busy so thats where my time goes.
Took a friends car to the drags ran a 9.2 then a 8.8 over the quarter back to the drags saturday .
Shes a little datto 1600 running a turbo LS
850rwhp on a mild tune.

Also we dynoed a mates eh i did a bit of work on.
It has a rb20det which i paid 100 dollars for 7 yrs ago . Absolute lucky dip engine unknown condition rolled out 193rwhp drives fantastic.
So i do keep busy just not on my own toys.

what a cracker, 105 mph no probs I also looked at a new base model Monaro 6cyl for similar cost but radio and heater was extra as I recall so went for the dato
Finally got around to making the wiper motor bracket and gasket.
Im using a BA falcon one now.

Nice work Pete.
pete I had to use a XD falcon motor as vr commodore didn't come through the fire wall enough. It looks in the pictures that you may strike the same problem.

You could also put the mounting plate [or another] on the inside . Haydn
I have modified the original vr arm to fit the fc parts. Should work.

Just need a spot face drill bit so i can get the nut on
Using this arm makes up for the short shaft on the vr wiper motor

That's very similar to what I did Pete I think I used two nuts to gain more distance into the cab and it works fine.

Well the utes home
Everything works i just need to make the fuel tank for it and battery box.
I need to sort the base timing in the haltech as its too far advanced.
Gave her a quick bath and cleaned the chrome.
Really really dissapointed in the chrome its all turning to shit so may have it all redone for the 3rd time on some pieces.
Motivation is at a all time low doing big days at work takes it out of you.
Im on the hunt for seatbelts as autolux seems to of disappeared?

Looking real good mate, you can’t rush excellence. I brought my seatbelts from Repco, they are Klipan belts, may be able to buy them direct.

I had a commodore one in there then a xcell and it looked to modern so recod the delco one. my sedan one is cable drive and hidden. remeber this was a quick tidy up and drive car :D

i think it worked out 85 litres,
The rate im finishing stuff i wouldnt commit to selling one i dont think.
