Title: Starte Motor problems
Post by: REDMR2RED on January 21, 2012, 12:22:08 PM
Just when you think you've covered everything ...... something else goes wrong.   >:(

Started the FC Ute yesterday and the starter motor continued to run for a short time even after the engine started.  My car usually starts first kick.  Turned it off and tried again, same thing but this time it didn't stop after a few seconds and I had to lift the bonnet and turn off the battery switch. It did it a few more times, so I gave up.

This morning before turning the battery switch back on I turned the ingnition swith on and off a dozen times and tried again.  And it's back to normal.  But now I don't trust it.

Could it be the ignition switch or the solenoid or the starter motor?  Considering it continued to run when the ignition was turned off fully, my thought was it must be the solenoid.

Any thoughts!

Kevin

Kevin,
If you've got a test light or multi meter, take the wire off at the starter solenoid ( the push on terminal one) put the test light on the wire and get someone to operate the stater switch the light comes on when the switch is in start postion the fault is with the starter motor

Sounds to me like the shaft needs oil where the solenoid throws the gear out to engage with the ring gear. When the car starts the engine continues to drive the starter which is the noise you hear. Eventually the starter gear returns into place and all is well for a while.

Pull the starter out and have a look at the shaft - if it seems dry then this will be your problem.

correct ken
starters are like women, give them a good service & they run good for a while.
but....reco your starter,go forever
unlike a women....

REDMR2RED

Ken is most likely correct in his diagnosis but as an added precaution you may also want to check that your ignition switch is returning to the on position after releasing the key.

Thanks everyone, I checked the ignition switch and it appears that it is returning OK.

So tomorrow the starter will come out to lubricate the shaft, thanks Ken.

My fe did the same never didnt engadge just always hung on for a while.
so I stripped it down and it was choca block full of carbon.
so I bead blasted everything except armeture and inner windings.
now the bastard takes 3 or 4 clicks to engadge?
i used never sieze on the shaft so maybe its too gooey ?
it all moves free and once its hot its fine.
