Title: brake lights
Post by: Not Happy Jan on November 26, 2011, 05:38:47 PM
I have an issue with my brake lights
When the lights are on the brake light is on i.e bright light on the passenger side. Drivers side is OK.  (i.e  both filaments light up) if I take out the bulb housing from the light surround then the brake light goes off, and just a single filament is on.  Earth it again against the housing and the brake light comes on.
when the lights are off and the brakes are pressed then just the parking lights come on.??? Single filament,Hope that makes sense!
Any ideas???

seems to me it's an earthing issue, either the housing to the car or globes or wires to the housing.if you had rain or washed your car lately ,even under carports you get condensation, check it out & if all that fails ,get  McGYVER. ;D

Mine had a loose wire after a day of chasing in the blinker pot up on the colum

I also think there is a short in the switch in the honey pot - could be a loose wire as fchoon suggests. Could also be a short in the socket holding the globe, pull the globe out and check the wires are sound

Thanks for the replies
I just wiggled the wires as they come into the receptacle for the bulb and now nothing.. Gave it a bit of a clean and still nothing.
I feels like the black wire has broken about 1cm from the connector ...at the least it is very corroded.
How do you remove the old wire to check. Are they soldered into place. I tried using a soldering iron on the end but it wouldn't budge. Swearing at it doesn't work either ;D

Take the bulb out and push the wires and the centre comes out of the housing and you can unsolder the ends on the wire little brass thingo.

All Fixed
Thanks all for your input!
There was a dry joint at the "little brass thingo"
But I also changed the bulb to one out of the standard wagons blinker and it then worked a treat.  ???
