You need to log into the US site to be able to purchase from the US Ebay. The same happens when I purchase from Ebay UK. It is in US $ because it is it the US Site. I have purchased from both and dont fear either.
Hope this can reassure you but offcourse there are people who do not play by the rules no matter where they are.
