Title: Locusts
Post by: Glenn 'Stinky' Stankevicius on April 07, 2010, 10:17:22 PM
I told a few people about my adventures with locusts between Balranald-Hay-West Wyalong, here's the proof  :o
I hadn't been reading the forum as much on the lead up to the Nats and found out later there had been a warning  ::).
On the return trip the locusts had gone as far as Mildura and a few around the Renmark/Berri area too, although not anywhere near as bad as what we experienced last Wednesday. We had to stop a few times between fuel stops to clear the radiator as the car was overheating, looks like the radiator will be coming out for a proper clean soon.

I read the forum but ran out of time to manufacture a bug screen, I had a slight over heating problam on the way to Orange mainly due to crap and scale in my radiator & a few Locusts, a quick flush at Euston helped me get to Orange.

I Travelled back with Scott & Martin, the weather was cooler (rain) so the Locusts were not quite as thick, my temp started to rise by the time we made it to Mildura but with the assistance of the weather gods a huge down poor of rain and all the bug guts got cleared and I was back to normal running temp for the rest of the trip home.

Cheers Jim

We copped the thunder storm on the way into Mildura too, a few close calls with lightening strikes, torrential rain and crazy semi drivers made for an "interesting" drive.

Stinky

By the sounds of it you were not to far behind us.

We hit the plague between Balranald and Hay on the Tuesday
Luckily we were following a semi for the whole journey who took the brunt of the swarms.

On the way home from the Nats we hit the plague again between Cobar and Broken Hill.
50km out of Wilcannia we hit a wall of locusts. Managed to get to Wilcannia as the temp gauge started to rise. Pulled into the servo on the highway to find they had nothing to clean the windscreen so went around the corner to a BP advertised on the way in. Found a shed with one pump. At least he had a bucket of soapy water and a squeegy. I asked if he had a air or water hose to clear the radiator   No!
asked if there was a hardware store for flywire...No! So we cleared the radiator by hand before continuing.
50km out of town we had to pull over to clear the radiator again. Devised a good stiff bristle brush to reach through the grill. Bundled together some cable ties and Gaffa taped them together. Worked really well

the wagon looked like this by Broken Hill

Am now sitting in our hotel room chasing out locusts.

In comparison to the others I had a relatively clean trip home. Maybe the cooler weather made the locusts hide, or maybe we got them on the way up to Orange.
I was very popular with the boys in blue. I got pulled over for breatho at Wagga, and again at Deniliquin for another breatho, licence check, rego check, and drug test  :o Passed all of them with flying colours of course.
Not complaining though, I would rather see the guys out in force and keeping our roads safe.

Thought this would be great way to dry my socks. ;D

Cheers

We've had a couple of interesting nights in Broken Hill
with the future Mrs 8) 8) 8) squealing and getting me to chase locusts around our hotel room every time she hears one on the wooden floorboards (which is very often as the plague is passing through town)

They are getting worse

Lucky i fitted the screen

I must get around to washing and vaccuming the wagon

The horrible smell suggests the locusts are starting to decompose
