Just thought i would let you all know that there has been alot of locust action in the areas we will be travelling through on our way to Orange. We will not come accross them until above Albury, so i would suggest that if you value your radiator and grill that you put some fly wire or shade cloth across the front of your cars, no matter how dickie it might look, it is cheaper than a new radiator.
Cheers Scotty

Tony, I thought you had grown out of the "frock" fetish... "drag out the old car bra"....

Scott, thanks for the heads up - went out and bought some flywire today. We head off on Friday (like 36 hours  :)), taking in a few days in Canberra & in Katoomba to get us into the mood. Tony has helped me get Chris's ute singing in tune... 48 main jets and some tweaking of the idle mixtures & vacuum balancing the twin strommies and it runs much better. Now just got to pack everything (including the patchwork quilting - well, it is her car  ;))  into the ute and we'll be ready.
See you soon in Orange,

regards,
Trevor_B

Made my locust guard today, thank Scott.  We leave Tuesday, staying with friends and will catch up with the VIC mob at Cootamundra.

Cheers, Kevin

Wasn't going to worry too much about the 'hoppers, that is until I went on a shake down run to Traralgon and back - so now after much effort to remove the guts of just a few bugs, I'm in the middle of getting that flywire over the grille!
Thanks for the tip Scotty
cheers,  Leigh

getting exciting now!!

Any quick tips from you experts about how to cover the grill opening (FC) and tie the flywire down?

Thanks,

Martin

I just used cable ties thru the flywire & around the top grille bar and bumper. Looks dicky but should save a lot of cleaning and overheating. Plan is to dispose of the used bit "in an environmentally friendly fashion" when I get to Orange and use a fresh piece for the trip home.

Hi All
Living in Cootamundra the last 7 years I have wire between the grill and the radiator ALL the time.
there are some grass hoppers around.

Wish I'd read this post about the locusts before today.  I got a radiator full of them travelling over the hay plains to naranderra area.

Martin, i found that if you put the tape on the edge of the fly screen half way then fold it back onto itself and stick it to itself then get another piece of tape and stick that to the grill then to the tape onm the edge of the screen, it worked fine for me, and i did about 300klms in the FC on the weekend with it and it hasn't folwn off yet.

The tip from my grandad was to undo the 4 radiator bolts and put the screen in front of the radiator.

Cheers
Peter.

Thanks for the tips fellas.  Nylon fly wire and cable ties were the method I took:  put it on today.

Now I'm just waiting to leave.  Got a million things to do before I go away, but getting impatient to get moving now.

Scotty you are a life saver.  The Locusts were a nightmare.  I fared OK with the screen I made covering the radiator and 90% of the grille.  Took me 1/2 hour to clean the front of the car.  Someone who arrive at Cootamundra via Mildura had his car covered with locusts and took ages to pick more than 100 out of his radiator and thermo fan. The frony of his car was yellow from dead locusts.

The majority of the VIC contingent fared much better leaving the Hume at Coolac to Cootamundra.

See you in Orange tomorrow.

Kevin
