Title: Paint colour on hubcaps? Post by: frank on June 21, 2009, 09:23:17 PM hi everyone
from previous threads, I know the red is maranello (excuse the spelling), but wondering about the black ... is it gloss, semi-gloss or matt? And I guessing some primer first? Any other tips greatly appreciated, it's one of those jobs I'm dreading .. cheers frank Title: Re: Paint colour on hubcaps? Post by: mcl1959 on June 21, 2009, 09:46:07 PM Gloss black - no primer

Post by: FC427 on June 22, 2009, 10:41:39 AM Gloss black - no primer Shouldn't they be etched so the paint will stick to the Chrome properly ??? ??? ??? ???........FC427.......Ken Title: Re: Paint colour on hubcaps? Post by: mcl1959 on June 23, 2009, 07:13:58 PM Depends if you're replicating original or not - originals used enamel paint over a stencil straight onto chrome. Etching is OK to make paint stick better.

1) Wash the hubcaps thoroughly with degreaser. 2) Knock out any dents. 3) Wash the hubcaps when you're doing teh dishes. here's a chance to volunteer for a job for your missus. Make sure you scrub them very well. 4) Rinse them off very well. 5) Let 'em dry. 6) Apply paint. When I did the black, I put it on thick, so that it settled into a smooth, brush mark free surface. 7) Put tehm away for a week or two to dry. Now, when I use a pressure blaster on those hubcaps, teh paint will not lift. It adheres to teh surface like it is chemically bonded. At that time, i used 'ordinary' gloss red, as i was having some trouble getting Marinello Red in an enamel. I did do an FJ hubcap for my father, as a clock, using Marinello Red Lacquer, brushed on. It sticks reasonably well too. |
