Post by: Ed on April 30, 2009, 12:03:10 PM
Hello,

Can anybody help me find some info on how to register a new "homebuilt" trailer in NSW?

do u need a  manufacturing plate / license, inspection etc?

Planning to build a bike trailer.

Cheers

Ed

Not sure about NSW but here in VIC if the trailer is less than 3M (10 feet) and no wider than the vehicle then no registration is required.

Check this out, the National Code of Practice for building small Trailers

Hey Red,

Just found a manufacturer's compliance plate which you can buy.

just need to fill it in.  Unfortunately NSW is not so generous with no rego requirements.

rego of a bike trailer will be about $52 pa.

cost increases with size / weight.

Looks like, all I need to do is stamp in a VIN #, just researching all this before I go ahead.

Cheers

Hey Ed.....

Talk to Leon Spicer. He built his own car trailer for the last nats and might be able to point you in the right direction.....

Good idea Les,

I'd forgotten about that.

I think the smaller trailers are easier to rego, but certainly Leon would be a good starting point.

Next meeting

You will need a trailer compliance plate which can be purchased from most trailer parts suppliers.  You will then need to fill the blank details in which is generally done by engraving.  Try the address below which will start you off with the necessary info, whilst in the RTA site there are other useful downloads such as braking, lighting, coupling and safety chain requirements.  You will also need to have the trailer inspected at a Blue slip AUVIS checking station (one that can do unregistered vehicles) then with alldocs complete it is simply off to the RTA and hand over your cash.

Hope this helps Wayne

Hi Wayne,

Yes that does help alot.

I trolled the RTA website but couldn't find all that info!

another visit to the blue slip station, where they will nit pick.. lol  :-\

I find the compliance plate quite funny, particularly as you just stamp it and attach it yourself. I found a supplier who has these.
