Title: Strip down naked ......................... Post by: hrpremier on October 08, 2008, 01:59:38 PM Hi all
Started to pull the guards off my FC and was wondering what grade paper in used as a starting point to rub back to bare metal. I started with a 600 sanding disc on a small angle grinder. Not sure if this is to coarse, seems ok but theres always a little bit of doubt. Also is it then recommended to go over it again with 1200 grade or such. Now footy season is over and done with for a few months (AFL, not that silly league game and don't even get me started on soccer) hopefully I can start putting more time in the shed working on the car. Careful with the angle grinder though, you can warp panels if you stay in one spot too long and heat it up. Title: Re: Strip down naked ......................... Post by: TTV6FC on October 08, 2008, 10:56:28 PM Tried all these methods and would say that stripper first then "strip" disc is the way to go from both a cost and panel damage point of view.Strip discs on their own can distort panels (as mentioned and are bloody expensive) if you are trying to move thick paint and paint stripper on it's own is not enough.Using the two together works well and the discs also get into the small pits. Then I use deoxidine to neutralise anything left in the pits.Cheers,Jamie.
Title: Re: Strip down naked ......................... Post by: ofc304 on October 13, 2008, 08:07:25 PM use paint stripper & metal paint scraper apply stripper fairly thick then cover in plastic for about 15- 20 minutes then try a small area may need to re apply a 2nd time after you scape off the first as acrylic will melt rather than fry up like 2 pak wear gloves this is a very toxic product as it is caustic. I''ve been using these products for years make sure you clean off everybit of paint residue or the stipper will work under new paint, stay away from joints & seams. Read all safty info good luck with bit .regards Glenn.
