Title: Spark Plug Covers
Post by: KFH on August 06, 2008, 03:55:30 PM
In the interests of keeping the car original I would like to know if the spark plugs had rubber covers over them originally or was there just a bare connection on the plug?

Keith, as far as I kmow they were bare. I think these are original. There should be a rubber O ring just below the coil holding them all together.

Thanks John

That how mine is at this stage and from what I remember from a long time ago this is how it was. I'll leave it that way.

Cheers

I remember fitting a set of spark plug leads when I was a first year apprentice. One of the older mechanics tried to suck me into putting my hands on the bare spark plug leads to stop the motor. I wouldn't but he did and the engine stopped. Never seen anyone do it since, but definately bare no covers over the leads.

For the benefit of people who want to use the rubber O ring that John mentioned in his post the size is 18mm ID x 5mm thick.  Mine still had the original one on it though well perished. It held the front three plug leads together.  A bearing place should be able to supply one - I hope

Thought the plugs had covers, maybe that was fb onwards, but on that topic does anyone have any rubber boots for the coil & dizzy they no longer need

I picked up some boots up from Repco.  They are not quite the same as the original.  The old ones had gone very hard.
