Post by: fatso on March 20, 2008, 01:44:00 PM
hi all. glen here have been trying to buy fe or fc for some time now. finally found one that i think is a really nice car . it has a lot of extras i am a panel beater by trade and i looked at the venicle for over 1 hr and i could not find any rust. i am not smart enough to post photos but hopefully my  girls will be here over on the weekend and they will. hope this will create some interest.i live in dapto nsw just wondering what club/clubs i should look at joining as i would like to go on outings with other people and there cars. the car arrives from queensland next week.

   1956 model
   engine number-L287506
   chassis-6-1331-S

Welcome aboard Glen,

I look forward to seeing pics of your new car.  I hope you get many happy years of motoring from it.

NSW FE-FC Club would be a good place to start.  Someone will probably post details here shortly.  Quite a few of the members would be on the way to South Aust for the FE-FC Holden Nationals over Easter.

 :) ;D

Hi Glen,

From what I can see the from the numbers that you have supplied that is one very early FE according to the data it was the 331st FE of any kind assembled at the sydney plant, and 31st business sedan assembled at the Sudney plant. The engine number shows as being produced in July

You can check other data that is on the firewall and enter it into the calculator listed below. Ken (one of the Guru's on this site that collects numbers for a database and extremely knowledgable) may well be very interested in your car if he doesn't have the details already

http://www.fefcholden.org.au/techinfo/idinfo.html

I hope that you get much enjoyment from the car

Glen, nice to hear of this car again - once belonged to Terry Hamilton in QLD when I got numbers.

FE-217-S-31
167-488AQ
253-14756

Chassis number 6-1931 B

Obviously there is a difference between the chassis numbers, can you check your numbers carefully again and confirm which is right please

Hi,
Where in Qld did you buy the car?  Just that, today I was driving down the road from my place and saw an FE similar colour on a tilt tray.  I am sure I recognise the car and am sure it is a FE 217, I was talking to the owner a few years ago. Does it have FC mouldings on the side?  The guy I talked to was telling me that the mouldings were an after market accessory??

Hope all goes well with the car

Michael

Yes the car had FC mouldings on the side when I saw a pic of it about 8 years ago.

All NSW FE made ID plates have a weird code on them

FE 225 has AO on the plate
FE 215 has AP on the plate
FE 217 has AQ on the plate
FE 2106 has AS on the plate

I assume AR was reserved for either the wagon or the van, but neither of these were made in NSW so the code was never used (that I have seen anyway). Then the code was dropped for the FC model.

I don't know what the significance of the code is

Re AQ/AO etc:

Going by similar codes used on FJ ID plates, it probably relates to a code for a different supplier of the interior trim material.

Glen you sent me 11 pictures and asked me to pick out the best ones and post those, sorry mate could not pick out ones any better than the other so here are all of them. :)

Besides that would be denying everyone else the enjoyment of peering at them.  :D

That is a good looking car.  In spite of it being a mix of models and trim specs, it has a really integrated look.   :)

Great looking car, pleased that both your wife and you love the car, much easier when the Minister for Finance, War, Peace etc approves.

Hope it gives you many years of pleasure. I look forward to the day that I can meet up with you both.

It's usually stamped along the rounded edge where the top of the inner guard goes from horizontal to vertical. Generally it's above the battery box, but can be as far along as above the regulator.

The numbers are only about 1/4" tall, and can be pretty hard to find.

RET, I've been thinking about this (always a worry). If these are to do with interiors, it would seem more probable that the code might relate to the interior kit to be used so that someone knew exactly what to supply for which car? particularly if the shells were being sent interstate.

Also, I assume that cars that went to the assembly only plants, ie Brisbane and Perth, went as painted and trimmed shells? If not, I wonder how were they allocated and how the assembly plants knew what paint and trim to stock unless they were told what was coming and how many. As this is an early Sydney car, in an unusual colour, if it is close to Geoff K's Standard car, this might support this proposition?

Sorry again Fatso :P

John

Title: Re: new member with new car
Post by: RET on April 02, 2008, 02:20:16 PM
John,

The only problem with that theory is that the existing 3-digit code preceding the AQ/AO entry already identifies both the colour(s) and the body-style. If you have a look at this page ($2), you can see what I mean.

I can't pretend to know the complete logistics of how the CKD vehicles were supplied to the assembly plants, but as I understand it, Sydney manufactured sedans were shipped to Brisbane and Adelaide manufactured to Mossman Park (Perth). Yet this code only appears on Sydney cars. (Obviously vans and wagons are a different story ($2).)

Don Loffler's books show Sydney made FJs have a very similar identifier on them which is known to relate to the trim supplier, hence the theory that Sydney made FEs continued to use this scheme.

cheers

Glen,

I've sent you the email that went around to our members, with the details. If you're coming from Wollongong you'd be best off meeting us there I would think.

If you've printed off the application form and want to bring it on the day, no worries. If you haven't got one we can make sure someone has one for you on the day.

cheers

Glenn

You didn't need to post a response as your reasons for selling are yours and yours alone, but in saying that I do wish you the best with your business and hope things pick up and you are in a better position to get another car.

Please don't feel that you are not welcome as this if for people with not only cars, but those with an interest in FE FC's.

Mmmmmm,,,,,,
Nice Car Glen,,,,,,

I have seen this car on E-Bay, and have been looking, ( and for a long time ) for a good standard FE/FC, so I can join this great motoring fraternity !!

Just wondering what other members think of the car, if they know anything of its previous history, as I think thats pretty important !!
I think its important to me anyway, that the car is pretty stock, matching no's etc??
I see it came down from Queensland, anyone know much of the previous owner ??

Do the other members think this is good value for this car ?? (14k at moment ??)
Look forward to your thoughts??

And good luck to u Glen, I hope you get what you want for it,,,,,

Thanks
Geoff

The car seems to be a really good quality car and being a 217 makes it a very rare vehicle. Don't know that its worth 14K - I would have to see it close up to make that judgement. It's certainly worth around 10k just by looking at the photos.

This car came from up here near my place, and I have spoken to the previous owner a few times.  It is a very nice car and in very good condition, and I know it has won first place for best orignal and others in various shows up  in Qld.  He told me the FC trim was an original aftermarket accessory fitted when new, but how could this be so if the FC wasn't evenmade then?  The extra trim is the only thing I could fault, but I am an FE person anyway.  Again though, I am not sure if it would be worth $14 000!  It comes back to "It's worth what someone is willing to pay for it"
