Title: Temperature rating for grey motor temperature sender
Post by: FB_Ute on March 18, 2008, 07:08:48 AM
Hi all,

Does anyone know the temperature rating for a grey motor temperature sender?  We have a spare AC Delco that has "239 F LO" written on it.  239F seems high for a grey motor.  Would it be for a red?

Just thought we'd check before putting it in our trusty grey.

Cheers & thanks .... jacquie

Hi Jacquie,

greys just have the "idiot light" no?

sounds about right that at 239F the light would come on meaning its cooked.

An engines optimum temp is around 180F so you can see 239F is quite warm.  You can fit a gauge on for better temp indication and place it discretely if you are worried about originality.

Cheers

Thanks very much, Ed.  Yes, there's only an "idiot light" (at least, on the FB), though I thought that only came on when the engine was cooking, not already cooked.    I guess we were wondering whether the 239F-rated temperature switch was for a red motor rather than a grey, and whether there's a lower-rated switch for the grey.

We have installed (discretely) a digital temperature gauge, but the sender is connected to the thermostat housing bolt, so it's going to take time to figure out what's an OK temperature range vs what's not.

Cheers & thanks again .... jacquie

The idiot light is to warn you something is wrong with the cooling system and should come on when your engine is getting too hot, well before it cooks and does any damage.

Master parts catalogue gives no. as 7406993 from FE eng. no.L388858  to EH, Manual says temp light should come on when eng. temp. reaches 217 deg. F. hope that helps.

Just adding confusion to this topic -
- the EK workshop manual indicates 226F (108C) for the temp switch.
- and cross-checking Tridon - they call up a TTS033 part with a 125C spec.
- and I was just given a Tridon TTS100 (supposedly from a red engine), but can't find any tech data on that part.
- grey motor info link http://www.fbekholden.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=9856 also indicates TTS033.
