4 years ago the car was at a panel beater for an attempt to fix the body and paint it. The beater said that the car had a bent rear right rail so he straightened that. But the quarter had been repaired previously by somebody else with the bent rail and was welded on wrong. So he cut the old quarter ready for another piece. With the quarter of he shut shop and left it like that. But i am tackling this properly now.

Thanks guys, i couldnt touch the rails unless i was going to get it engineered. I managed to fit a 245. Still a bit of room but i went smaller to play it safe untill car is drivable.

its pretty smooth but how will you know how fast you are going?
When you get pulled over for speeding and the copper says" Do you know how fast you were going?" you could, with all honesty, say "No officer I did not know how fast I was going!!!!!" :P

Just mounted a 90ltr stateman fuel tank in the old girl, still have to modify the filler neck which i'll do tomorrow night. Also engineer made me fabricate extra cross members under the body which were a real pain to do on the ground!!! Also put the seat mount bolt in the pillar.

looking real nice there. ive almost completed doing a similar gas tank swap but mine was from a VN/VP commy. had my filler neck relocated to the old position and had the guy srop in a backflow restrictor to slow and stop and fuel splinng out under acceleration.
what were the braces the engineer anted you to put in and wher did you fit them as i was just going to put a piece of 65 x35 x3 tube in the boot as a brace just below the roll down above the diff. id be interested in seeing them,
how are you going to hold your tank in?

Engineer has not seen it yet, as for the straps i'll be looking in to that tonight also. I'll put more pics up of the strapped up tank when its done. Are you using the original filler neck or the commodore neck?
im using a combination of the 2, i used part of the original neck so i can use an older style cap, and part of the lower neck, the guy who soldered it up for me also incorporated as a restrictor for splash back which is just above the large breather and the breather and overflow vents. i also used the bent section near the top of the commodore neck in between the 2 original sections to get the angle right, took a little bit of fiddling around as i did all the trial fitting at home then took the tank in. the new sheet metal is 2.5 mm.

you can just see the welds between the 2 sections here, i also had to modify the boot latch slightly as it would foul on the new pipe. as mine is being set up for efi i will solder the breather hole closed in the new cap. i have got to put a new sender unit in from the top of the tank now to match up with new fuel gauge :-\ :-\
there are some nice looking filler caps (aero style) you can get from earls plumbing but these were way out of my budget

Instead of changing the fuel sender unit, try ringing howard instruments in Heidelberg and ask them if the gauge can be calibrated to suit your sender. I will be using the original commodore sender as i'll be running autometer gauges. Do you know if you can get nice looking fuel caps for the commodore tank?
i want to run a speco fuel gauge and when i spoke tothem they said their gauge is only compatible with their senders, though he did say something similar to what you sugessted. we have a gauge repair place here in canberra so i might ask them, just have to weigh up the costs involved. but its worth a try.
as far as the caps go i couldnt find anything suitable due to the commy neck being a screw in as all of them are hidden behind a door . the caps i spoke about are similar to motior bike filler caps in they have a retainer ring, however you will need to adapt this to your neck, when i spoke to the tech standards guys in canberra about this very same situation i sugessted that i wanted to just use approved rubber tubing to match up the 2 they weren't too happy about that idea but it may pay to ask your rego office.
and you could also use the bike filler caps as you are still doing body work, mine was painted when i decided to change tanks :-\ you can pick up the necks and a small section of sheet metal around them for about $100 at most bike wreckers. all you have to do then is cut out a section on your beaver panel and weld in the new one.
i wanted to retain a more original look from the rear so after much stuffing around and looking i decided on my current path.

Try a motorcycle wreckers, I have a nice looking "aviation style" filler that is destined for my currently shelfed Torana project.

The fuel cap im going to let the panel beater put that in for me, im leaning towards a blue with white flashing but still unsure. I had a dream that my car came back from painter this horrible green colour and i was cursing that i spent all this money and it turned out like that... :o :o :o maybe im just thinking too much about the old girl.. as for your sender problem i will ring howards for you tommorow.

hi john, i spoke to howard instruments today and they were really very helpful. i have now decided to get them to modify the VN sender unit so it is compatible with the FC 0-30 ohm gauge. it actually will work out cheaper than getting a speco.
i'll be getting it down to them in the next week or so i hope.

Thanks guys, certainly will be putting up more pics.. but still has to go back to the painters because i think he is blind >:( The engine bay is bothering me really bad, the repair marks are really obvious and there are a few marks which have to be repaired. When the car arrived home the doors and boot had no padding between the body, so all the way from the painters to my house the doors and boot chipped paint away >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( So that's 1 set back.

Custom console still needs work done, wiring 85% done, running gear done, bit of chrome put on and billet side mirror. Still bit of work ahead..

I managed to buy nearly a complete set of chrome bits for a fc from them only a couple of weeks ago, they said a customer had left them and never picked the up. Got them dirt cheap too ;D

What diff are you running, and what size wheels and tyres are you running up the back?

The tubs cost $250 a for the pair, theres no modifying of the boot only cutting that little bit from the original tub to the rail.. Im running a 8 1/2" wide rim with a 245 tyre.... and 9 inch diff... If your going to go this way you do the tubs first then sit what ever wheel you want to use, make sure there square to each other and have adequate space (aprox 20mm) between the tyre and tub. Then measure the distance betweeen the back of the 2 wheels and thats your diff width... Im actually going to full tub the car after i have finished it, so i can run a 345 or so.. I should have done it in the first place. The only reason i didnt is because everybody was booked out for a least 10 months....

Hey John,Your car is looking better than when I first saw it you just got it back from the sandblasters, you probably don't remember me but I got a door off you bout 18 months ago or more from the opposite side of town to where you were living. Just a couple of questions what master cylinder are you running & I am pretty sure you do have to have a collapsible steering column also I thought you had to have a welding certificate to do the mods yourself Re: the chassis strengthening. ??? This is only what I have been told over the years so not sure.I am doing a van up at the moment was going V8 but changed my mind again for the 500th time ;D Now am going to run full VN V6 comm. gear. Anyway your car is looking great can't wait to see it in the flesh or paint probably better.

Thankyou very much Pete for the comments. I have ordered 320 sq feet of almond cream colour leather from the states which should arrive this week some time. Then off to the trimmers. Not sure of any patterns but i want it to look sleak and not too busy.
Getting the exhaust to fit is lots of fun isn't it!!!

just an update on the old girl, she gone to the trimmers to get head linning done should be back on friday so my other trimmer can do the seats, door cards and carpet.

Kids grow up too fast .
I have 3 daughters 1 3 10 love seeing old pics of us as kids and want memories for my kids.

Still have bits and pieces to do like the custom scuff plates and some resonators to quieten her down a little etc..
Very special well done. I do like the interior especially the centre console and the treatment on the doors. Great stuff.

Can u tell me if u had to modify the firewall at all or cut the seam the sticks out
at 90% angle of the fire wall to for the chev in

Thanks guys. Q bear would be happy but he has yet to see in finished ;)
I did cut the seam that hangs out but I welded another 50mm x 2mm strap right across from behind the seam which the engineer agreed on. As for the radiator I just ordered that from aussie dessert coolers.

When I did the dummy fit of the engine the head on the driver side touched it.
That is one beautiful looking FC, what an excellent job.

How is the sexy fc going?
Going good mate. Always doing things to improve. Lowered the rear another 40mm upgraded to an alloy radiator now im playing with thermo fans. Have 2 fans in the bay but its not cutting it. Im trying one of those 16" bmw fans front mounted.
