Title: Horn Button
Post by: crowbar on November 26, 2007, 07:36:07 PM
Has anyone repainted a horn Button?
If so would you be able to tell me the colours and how to get off the old paint without damaging the clear plastic

Crowbar, the old paint is removed with caustic soda, the new paint is an opaque enamel which must be sprayed on with a mask in order to eliminate brush strokes. The chrome is achieved by vacuum metalising.
I have tried a number of times with a brush but cannot eliminate brush strokes entirely.
You cannot use a water based paint because it doesn't stand the UV anywhere near as well as enamel paint.
You must use an opaque paint so that the chrome shines through the red when the light strikes it.

After all this - you can see why we had them done as a repro.
