Title: Straight cuts
Post by: srevoice on May 03, 2007, 05:46:13 AM
Hello all, has anyone got some straight cuts for a grey they want to sell. I am doing up a hot grey and want it to make a bit of noise.

What about Diecrest Engineering?
Worth a try I guess, they make(made?) straight cuts for Red motors.

Diecrest Engineering
Bagshaw St Harcourt VIC 3453

If they don't make them already, I am sure they could for the right amount cash.

i have made some enquires, this is a definately a no goer.  I have heard that a steel set is the go for the old grey and thats what I think i will get as mine has the shitty fibre one and im not driving to Mt Gambier and stripping it, cheers >:( >:( >:( >:( :P :P

There's nothing really wrong with fibre ones in general, as long as they're kept lubricated.  If the oiler to them gets clogged up (often the case in a car that has sat for a long time), they get brittle and collapse.

Note also that it's a designed weak-point, because it's a lot easier to replace than a lot of other engine internals. It can be replaced without pulling the engine out.

Having said all that, if you've souped up the engine a bit - cam, double valve springs and the like - you'll be putting more stress on the timing gear than they were really designed for, so a steel one is probably a good idea.

Hope that's some help.

cheers

maybe fibre timing gears are ok, but after striping two within six weeks on the F3 freeway i personally am too scared to get on the freeway again with fibre gears.
