Title: 179 REAR MAIN SEAL LEAK Post by: ozihotrod on March 10, 2007, 11:36:50 AM I HAVE A 179 FITTED IN MY FC, THE REAR MAIN SEAL LEAKS NON STOP , IVE REPLACED THE SOFT SEAL 3 OR 4 TIMES TOP AND BOTTOM. THIS WORKS FINE FOR A WHILE THEN THE LEAK RETURNS, . ANY IDEAS ON HOW TO FIX THIS PROBLEM ONCE AND FOR ALL. CAN A LATER TYPE OIL SEAL BE FITTED WITH MODIFICATION TO THE JURNALS???? IF SO WHAT IS INVOLVED.
Title: Re: 179 REAR MAIN SEAL LEAK Post by: craiga on March 10, 2007, 10:43:27 PM The engine isn't building up pressure internally is it? This would blow the gaskets and rear main out as you are experiencing.
Is the PCV valve operating OK? This must be in good condition as pressure will build if the PCV valve is blocked/inoperative. Compression rings with leak by will pressure sump as well. We use to have cylinder leakage testers that could pressurise the cylinder using compressed air and check for this condition. Maybe your local mechanic will have one? Good luck. Cheers, Craig. Title: Re: 179 REAR MAIN SEAL LEAK Post by: Ed on March 27, 2007, 10:53:27 PM if the seal is rotating a little, try using some superglue to hold in the lower seal.
a few dabs of the glue, put the lower seal in and presto, it wont spin. a trick listed in the GMH technicians book. Cheers Ed Title: Re: 179 REAR MAIN SEAL LEAK Post by: fe-ute56 on April 02, 2007, 07:24:01 AM crank could be worn cheers danny
