Title: steering
Post by: fcdunedin on December 12, 2006, 04:49:48 AM
please help!!! i was reversing out driveway and the steering locked up.It [FC sedan]would turn right ok but would not turn left any further  than 1/2 way, like it was locked up,or obstructed? I had to jack front of car up and move with a trolley jack back into garage, when on the jack i tried steering wheel again and the problem was still the same.I removed nut on pitman arm and freed it from spline, tried steering again and it still locked up,but after a couple more turns it freed itself up and now steering runs smoothly lock to lock.I had a new kit from rare spares installed [SBFEK]1 year ago and car has probably travelled only 300 miles,as you can guess i am not keen to put pitman arm back together and go for a drive and see what happens?? Has something like this happened to anyone else or had experience with? Just hope this question is detailed enough to understand. Thanks

If it was still locking up with the pitman arm disconnected it suggests something inside the steering box is binding up.  Are you sure the steering box reco kit was correctly fitted?  I haven't got a workshop manual to hand, but I recall there are some fine tolerances involved.  The how-to in the manual is quite detailed.

Not much help, I know.  Have you got a workshop manual?  If you don't you should get one.  The original GM-H one, not the Gregory's version.  They appear on Ebay fairly frequently.

cheers
