ive welded the front and back off the tranny hump and i welded the lip that runs around the firewallfrom the inside so that i could grind it away for a cleaner look in the engine bay also gives me some more clearance at the back of the motor.
the last picture is where i cut out the chassis rail and folded up a new piece and welded it in this will be where the commodore fuel tank will sit on

cheers fat

Panel gaps around the door are excellent . The repair was really easy compared to doing wheel tubs on the van.next on the list is the drivers side outer sill that will be this wednesday night

The above photos are off the a pillar on the passenger side lucky it wasnt as bad as the other side only a couple more little bits of metal to weld in and the repair will be finished

ps just ordered a tailgate skin from craig vaine sheet metal $60.00 plus freight will take photos when it turns up

Fatboy, make sure you give us some feedback on the tailgate skin. I've pretty much given up on finding anything here in SA and the one on the FE Ute is trash.

Title: Re: FATBOYS OLD SCHOOL UTE
Post by: FATBOY on June 16, 2007, 07:10:19 AM
Paint stripper get the panel hot scratch the panel with 36 grit apply the stripper put plastic over the top of that then leave for 20 30 minutes then peal it off and scrape the reidue off then wipe over with thinners .THen go over the panel with astrippa disc looks like seaweed then wipe over with deoxidine or similar

be carefull using the bog at night like that, the metal shouldnt be cold to touch, the bog shouldnt really need much heat to cure it, unless its winter i use upol cool-it to retard the curing time so it doesnt start to cure before i get it all on and into shape.
you dont want moisture in the air to get in or the metal to rust, the only ways to remove rust are with sandblasting or acid, rust can form on the metal in the night air in half an hour or less so you need to treat it with acid just before you bog and get any moisture of the panel with metho on a rag, especailly at night when moisture from rinsing of the acid wont dry.
by the looks you know what you are doing and your metal work is probably alot better than mine but the night at this time of year isnt the best for bog, i plan on doing a bit soon in the garage with the door shut and a bunch of supercheap
your desk layout looks the same as mine but mine has bulleit cans on it and my steering wheel is now in my room.
flas off-

flash on

my steering wheel is white pearl over a white base with a bullet in the centre.

my colum is EJ , i was kicking myself after leaving a fully recoed one a year ago at a swap meet for $6o, mine is a auto one with its holes filled, i still need to wire it and find a nice chrome indicator stalk for it but its also painted in the white / white pearl as is the dash fascia, i had some probs like rain in the paint and went a little heavy with the pearl fixing them and overpowered the white so the dash especailly almost looks gold

Title: Re: FATBOYS OLD SCHOOL UTE
Post by: fccool59 on June 23, 2007, 08:25:14 PM
its not collapsible, its just a six and is kind of only a 179.
i guess you would have to find a colasible colum the same length roughly as ej-eh.

Nice job Fatboy.

Nice vanishing act Fat,

I find with the louvres and heat off the motor I dont use mine much, however down the freeway with more airflow, I usually crank the vent open.

Cheers

I'm with you guys, I love drivin' with the cowl vent open. After the FC there hasn't been one produced with a cowl vent, so i think my car is pretty unique.

Hey Fat,

Starting to take a little shape. I like the idea about getting more room for the rails, every little bit helps.

Cheers

All looking good Fat,

one thing, I had to do was notch the passenger side rail for more clearance for the oil filter.  While you dont have to do it (it will fit) it gives added clearance.  I use a small commodore filter.

Cheers

Ball is finally rolling mounted the vn v8 brake booster today was a really easy job drilled a 54mm hole through the firewall and mount behind then drilled the 4 mounting holes for the booster then i cut the booster rod down then everything bolted up as per factory.
I have been putting this job off for months but it was so easy.Wednesday night ill be into the rear cargo area and fuel tank area .Then i can mount the diff back in and the front subframe can go back on.Then i can bring it home (as long as the  ek ute sells).Might have to take it to my mums house to get it out of the way
