Title: Rear quarter trim clips
Post by: pedro on July 17, 2013, 01:09:05 PM
Just interested in finding out what everybody else is doing with this problem, where the rear wheel arch and fuel inlet is you can't get at the clips from the inside so the original clips screwed on from the outside and you pressed the trim on to them, the rare spares trim kit comes with clips that have nuts on the back so they can't be used and i can't find anybody who sells the original type of clips anywhere.

There is a clip you can buy which presses into a blind hole and achieves the objective. It's similar to the one used on the front door lower stripe.

Thanks Ken I'll look into it, the kit came with a couple of dodgy looking plastic push in ones but they are too narrow for the rear strip.

I think the Rare Spares kit is fine except for the clips in this area.
The clip I use, you drill a hole about 5 mm diameter in the quarter panel, insert the clip into the trim and then push the trim onto the body. The clip legs compress together and then spring apart behind the hole.
The Rare Spares clip is a bit like this, but it is not very good.
I have also hand made plastic clips similar to what is used on HZ which are screwed onto the body like originals and then you press the trim over like original. This takes a little trial and error to get the size just right so you need to get that right first on an old panel.

Thanks Ken, I should have clarified better, but yes I meant it flares out like a screw one would when pressed in. Have u ever tried to take one off afterwards  :P serious question or do u just pull at it with reasonable force?

Yes that is a problem sometimes, I always test first on an old panel to make sure hole diameter is correct. In theory the clip should pull out with reasonable pressure and not graphic on too hard.

Cool. Yeah testing things out on irrelevant or more manageable areas of the car is always a good idea, such a simple idea but its amazing how many people just dont do it.

I ended up ordering some GM universal press in rear Quarter clips from America, not sure if they will fit or not but they look like they should.
