I recall a post I read here about vibrations in the car while driving, but can't find it now. Last night at our club meeting, one of the members told us of the same problem and how he finally got it fixed. It appears there is a cardboard tube glued inside the tail shaft and after time the glue breaks down and the tube spins on it's own. This throws out the balance of the tail shaft and each time the shaft is balanced it gives a different reading. Solution is to cut the end off the shaft, remove said tube and weld end back on, rebalance tail shaft and problem solved.

This is something I never ever heard of before, but it does make sense of a really tricky problem.
Look forward to getting the story on this detail!

My curiosity got the better of me, so I went to the shed and cut the end off an old tailshaft to see what (what if anything) was inside. And guess what!!! there it was toward the back of the shaft (diff end) a piece of cardboard tube just floating around inside. It is not what you would call a tidy piece as the ends are not square at all. My son who is a mechanic seams too think it may have been used as a sound deadener??, anyway here are photos to prove that it does exist.

Great quality shots at this size.
A good add for your skills behind the lens.

I have found these in tailshafts that I have shortened myself and never really thought about it as far as balancing goes .Just pulled them out and threw them away .But yeah , it would be for sound deadening and could cause balance issues if it was moving around . Pull it out , lot less gravel roads now . Haydn
