I was wondering if there is any difference in the stub axles themselves on HR frontends if they are using either drums or discs.
Or is it simply the braking method which is changed?

G'day Mikey,
The HD/HR drum brake stub axles are interchangeable left to right. The disc brake stubs are specific left to right, because they have provision for mounting of the caliper.

I had to use drum stubs modified to take my VT calipers and discs.

Thanks for the input lads, I suppose a bit more info from myself would help.

I have a complete HR frontend, except for the stubaxles, which need to be sourced. Havn't decided what disc setup to run yet.

Graham indicates there are drum type and disc type and so does Jason by saying he had to get his drum type modified to run VT discs brakes.(Jas what was done?)

This is my current understanding,  there are 2 stub types and depending on choice of brakes determines stub type needed.

Gee that was long, please feel to correct me/set me in the right direction.

Mick,

If you plan to use discs, then get the drum brake stubs.

modification involves grinding down the upper Drum brake backing plate mount (cast into the stub) about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch (can't remember exactly).  This is to allow the disc caliper adptor to seat properly etc.

I'm not sure of the differences between drum and disc stubs, however this was required when fiting a HQ caliper adaptor to a drum stub.

There may also be more recent advances in caliper adaptors.

I think Ford rotors offer the largest diameter? and drop out centres???

G'day Mick,

Ed's right on the money there... I have used the rotors and calipers fron a VT and supplied a set of drum stubs to Hoppers Stoppers in Vic.

They modified the stubs as described and then supplied all of the gear to do the job I required. Everything bolted up perfectly.

Thanks to all for your help,
                                          I will pay Hoppers Stoppers a visit, they are in the next suburb about 10 mins away.

I have used them before, but only for buying car and trailer brakes (pads, shoes, cups, rubbers, etc) but never knew they were into the modification game.

Sometimes you don't see the pot of gold sitting right under your nose.
Thanks to Jason for showing me to Hoppers all the way from Cairns!

Although you've got all the info you need I thought I'd add that I too have a VT front brake kit from Hoppers Stoppers.  The only difference being drop spindles.
I would highly recommend them to anyone for brake info,parts and kits as the were very helpful and were very knowledgeable.

While we are on the subject,
I am going to fit LC/J discs to my FE, the advice I have been given is to reverse the Torana stubs (left on right, right on left) and to use the HR steering arms.
Is this the right way or does someone know something better?

thats how my mate used to do it when he managed all GM wreckers in Sydney in the eighties, he swears its the simplest method, same as making electric windows for old holdens always use the kiss (keep it simple stupid)method bud

Now you mention it, what have you used for installing electric windows in an FC? Any particular modeltouse as a donor?
Any tricks?
As much info as possible would be appriciated.

we never fitted them to an FC but did to HR and EH's you get the ones from hk to wb and measure the arms to centre pin then start cutting and welding them back together with arms from back doors re welded at the right measured point so desired reach is achieved not hard just fiddly, cant remember exactly these days but start getting motors and arms from a few models  and non electric ones as well you will find a few just about perfect that way

Stinky, just interested to know if your changing left to right using torana stubs on a HR front worked or did you still have the steering geometry problems that are reported to occur when you use torana stubs on HR fronts?

That was a long time ago and boy do things change! The car's still not on the road yet (better get a wriggle on).
Anyway, I have ended up using a set of CRS drop spindles.
