Post by: GOA350 on September 17, 2007, 08:14:07 PM
I'm picking this FC up in a couple of weeks when I can get hold of a tractor to move the hay bales.

Great looking car, Scotty.
Photos are a bit deceptive, car looks to be blueish not grey.
Distinct Mid 1959 Car  > After Vic: June 1959 (by paint code), but before indicator lights went orange October 1959
Haysheds are great places for storing cars, unless there is a bush fire.

Really interesting pics Scott. Nice colour scheme too! Almost up there with Teal over Elk Blue ;) Do you know any of the car's history?

Cheers...Ken

Post by: mcl1959 on September 18, 2007, 07:33:11 PM
Geoff, according to rego sticker it's a November car - I think it says 20th on the expiry date.  If you look closely at the clear indicator it appears the orange may have faded out. Scotty will be able to tell us later if their is a globe in the lower socket.

It certainly is a great find though - that's 3 cars found in Vic in the last 4 weeks out of barns/sheds
It never rains but it pours!

G'day everyone,
Dean, I intend to clean it up to see what its really like. Then redo the mechanicals, brakes , ect, and get it to a roadworthy condition then put it on club rego and go criusing. I dont want to get too fussy with it otherwise it will never get finished (ask devilrod how long it takes when you start to pull too many things apart) besides, its only an FC  ;D ;D now if it was an FE it may be a different story, he he ;D.
I'll keep everyone posted on the old BALES(oh i mean, GIRLS) progress now that i can get photos up on the forum. Stay tune for the photos of her first criuse since 1979,
                       Cheers for now

So Scotty... have you got a tractor yet to shift the Hay Bales??? When do we see some more pics without 28 years of dust?

BTW - we nearly have our Ute on the road.... hope to get it registered in time for the Vic Club Weekend run to the Grampians in a month's time. Getting extractors & 2" exhaust fitted tomorrow  :) VASS next..

Cheers,
Trevor & Chris.

G'day everyone,
the car is home now and i have only had a quick look over it, but what i have seen it is in great condition in the body and subby. The interior is cactus, so if anyone has a red/black trim to sell i would be interested. I haven't had a chance to put photo's up yet, have been too busy, but will when i get a chance. I am leaving the dust on it for a while then in summer on a 40 degree day i'll take everything out of it and give it a good scrub then let it bake and dry out,
                         Cheers for now,
                                                Scott

Hey Scott,

How about a few photos on how the FE wagon's coming along?????  I ended up using the money on my 1st house and buying an engagement ring - Young and dumb, what I would'nt do to get hold of that car again!!!!!  I wish she could have put up with having a bonnet emblem for a ring that way I could have had them both!!!
Anyway hope it is bringing you joy and not too many headaches.

Cheers

G'day Shane, nothing has been done to the Wagon yet accept for the engine. It has had all the machining done and is ready to be assembled, one day. Sorry mate but I dont think I will be getting rid of her any time soon, I love the car and am going to really enjoy the building of her.
I am still currently building our new house and hope to have that finnished soon. Then I'll do the vintage caravan ive got then maybe the FC then hopefully the wagon, but those plans might change yet. There's always something to do.
          Cheers Scott

I have built a new motor for it and have bought some floor sections and bits and peices for it. I have cut the rear floor out and will hopefully have the new floor in this weekend. Unfortunatly i don't have the time i would like to have to b able to get more work done but i am enjoying biulding another car that is different to the others.
Iwill keep you all posted on my progress,

The motor is finnished all bar accessaries, the Jack Meyers headers are off to be HPC coated along with the manifold. My new electronic dizzy is being made as we speak and i should have it in a few days. I am concentrating on getting the floors done at the moment then the electrical, because the Rats ate it. Then i will get the brakes and running gear done, and we will be somewhere near how i want the car to end up.
I will update as i go so i will catch you all then,

No Ed, no Chev this time thats old hat now anyway ;D ;), they're turning up everywhere. Anyway i already have 2. Why not go back to the beginning and play with the things they yousto in the 60's and 70's. It's going to be a FUN car that i'm not going to be as worried about compared to the Pride & Joy.

Scott

The old girl should be great, good to see that you are putting a warm grey into it. I also think that the V8's have run their course, my FC will have a red 6, with 4 speed but will essentially be what was around in he '70's.

I wouldn't mind seing a close up of how you have converted your grey from bypass to full flow oil filters if you don't mind. Everyone seems to do it a little differently.

Keith

Post by: GOA350 on April 15, 2009, 09:32:22 AM
The flow through filter set up was already done before i got the engine, i just bent up some stainless tube for it. This engine was originally built in the 70's as a hotty, and since then it just sat around in the FC that just rusted away. Then i got hold of it and pulled it down and found that the circlip on no5 gudgeon pin had broken and run a groove in the bore and piston. I striped the rest of the engine and sent it to a machinist who sleeved that cylinder and honed the rest. I couldn't get just one piston so i had to get a set. with new rings and bearings and the deck shaved, the head had already been ported so i just had it faced and red motor valves fitted with hardened inserts and double valve springs, it should hammer. It also had a Wade 112 cam in it so i've kept that. The whole bottom end has been balanced, from clutch to balancer. The flow thru filter has definitly helped this engine in its previos life, which has helped me with the rebuild. I am really looking forward to giving this thing a bit of stick to see how well it goes.

Well done Scott,

Great to see another modified grey. Port match your head to your manifolds if not already done and the motor will breath a lot easier and rev a lot further. It will be interesting to see what RWHP you develop if you get a chance to dyno the motor. I get 100hp at the rear wheels with not much more done to mine.
Who is doing your electronic dizzy?

Go the greys!!

Weddo

I get Dick at Scorcher to do my dizzy's. I've had no problems with his stuff. A few years ago the FE/FC Club of Vic went to his factory for a tech night, and it was very impressive. He makes a whole new dizzy accept the cam gear, you have to send it down to him. I'm actualy getting 2 done, the other is for the Grey motor i'm building for my FE Wagon.
                                                                  Cheers Scott

Scott,

Good choice having the dizzy done by scorcher.  i've just changed the dizzy in mine to electronic and it was done by them as well.  Runs beautifully, the advance curve seems spot on.  It got even better when I changed all the leads and coil to MSD parts and put Iridium plugs in it.

I thought i would continue on this thread seeing as it was the original thread. Does anyone know how to transfer the photos from the other Hayshed FC thread? It would be great to get all the photos together so the progress can be seen completely.
Here are some more current photos. There is progress but it is slow due to Famliy, Footy season and work commitments.

And this is how she looks after the weekend
(http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y241/goa350/IMG_0149.jpg)    (http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y241/goa350/IMG_0151.jpg) This is me doing the dirty work.

(http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y241/goa350/HayshedFC020.jpg)  (http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y241/goa350/HayshedFC023.jpg)The car all masked up.

(http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y241/goa350/HayshedFC025.jpg) And the final result.

Now, i will put an old front end under it,to move it around while i am rebuilding the original front end, then i can turn the car around and lift it up and pull the diff, suspension and tank out, then finish painting the back half of the car.

This is starting to sound like a plan!!!!

Cheers Scott

Unfortunatly due to Summer coming on i was informed that i promised a swimming pool for the Kids this Summer, so i haved been dragged away kicking and screaming from the FC but i will get this damn pool done as quick as i can so i can get back into the FC. I am starting to understand why blokes call there wives "Handbrakes". They are always holding us blokes back. ;D ;D ;D

G'day Everyone,
just an update of what i have been up to with the FC. I painted the front end crossmember yesterday, so now i can start to put all the reco'ed parts i have already done together, on the fresh crossmember. Got my carbies, for the twin manifold, on Friday, so i am starting to set them up with linkages and rods. So progress is tsill being made. I haven't been taking too many photos lately but i will tonight and put them up as soon as i can.
Cheers Scott

Another update, motor is in now but diff is out. Springs are stripped and repainted, just need to be assembled when the new insulators arrive. Diff is in the mollasses drum getting rid of the rust at the moment. The floor is painted and ready for everything to be put back together. About to order the radiator, then i need to take it to the trimmers to have the headlining and windlacing done then windscreens, then finished? (maybe). Anyway i think the photo's will tell the story.

Scott, you have done a great job, there is a lot of hours there. What radiator did you decide on? Im a bit worried about keeping my grey cool in Broome. Did you rebuild your steering box? if yes was it difficult. I renewed my front end all but the steering box and it plays on my mind. What exhaust system have yuo decided on to suit them headers, that grey looks great!

Gary, i did pull my steering box apart. All i did was clean it up and put it back together. There didn't seem to be any wear in it. When i put it back together, instead of using the grease that Holden recommends, i was told by a steering box reconditioner to use Morey's Oil Stabiliser. It's alot more sticky and will actually work its way up the steering components and lubricate them.
Those lines are my oil lines for my flow through oil filter system, which i have mounted on the radiator skirt. I plan to paint them once i am satisfied with the engine bay.
The radiator i am using is a re-cored standard one which i am having baffles fitted so that it works more efficiently, i plan to go and see him tomorrow. I am picking up, all the gear i need to make up my linkages, today and will make a start on them tonight.
The idea for this car, is to have a nice looking engine, and just have the rest of the car servicable and useful, and have plenty of fun with it.
And finally, Kathi, i did finish the pool and the kids love it. Even the handbrake is getting more understanding of my hobby/ obsession. ;D ;D ;D
Cheers for now

Great Progress made on the weekend.
Had Tony Galea and his family up for some much needed R & R on the weekend, so Tony and I spent the weekend in the shed, drinking beer, listening to the cricket, and working on the FC. It's amazing how much work you can get done when you have a bit of company and someone who you can let do whatever they want to, to the car and you can trust that they know what they are doing.
Let me tell you, Tony knows his stuff, and while going through all my shelves and boxes, Tony found things i had forgotten i even had.
After collecting FE/ FC parts for the last 25 years, it's easy to forget a few things.
Anyway here are some photo's.

 (http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y241/goa350/SDC10123.jpg)    (http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y241/goa350/SDC10120.jpg)     (http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y241/goa350/SDC10112.jpg)     (http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y241/goa350/SDC10124.jpg)     (http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y241/goa350/SDC10125.jpg)

We sorted the wiring out and got everything working, so i was absolutely stoked to see lights working and indicators and stuff like that. I put the rear springs back together and fitted them with new bushes. Radiator is fitted with panel above and bonnet latch. Bonnet is on, Choke is connected and works (thanks to Tony). So as you can see I am getting there.
Cheers Scott

Another update,

Fuel tank has been repaired and painted, just needs to be fitted. Tailshaft has new uni's and is in aswell as the diff. Rear bumper is back on with the tow bar. All door glass is cleaned and in and goes up and down nicely again. The doors have been sealed up where the door trims go on, just need to clean up the door trims and fit them and the handles. The accelerator linkages are finished and work well, the bonnet is back on, the new boot rubber is fitted and the boot hinges, but a little hicup when fitting the new hinge pins, one of them stripped so i'm waiting for another to arrive. Then i can fit the boot. I hope to get home tonight and do the rear brakes.
So as you can see, i am on track for the Nationals. I hope to get some more photos up soon,
   Cheers Scott

No work on the FC on the weekend, went to Berwick Swap instead. Getting work done at night though. Have been up until midnight for the last couple of nights.
Small amount of progress made, Diff is back in and brakes have been put back on with the handbrake attatched and adjusted. Fuel tank is in and connected, door trims are back on, the bash plates are on under the front end. Car is booked in to have front end allignment on Monday and exhaust system on Tuesday/ Wednesday, then get the FC home on Thursday and look at firing it up soon after. The FC is booked in to get the headlining fitted in 2 1/2 weeks, so this is probably the only thing that could hold me up.
      OOOOOOOOOOOOO i'm getting so excited  ;D ;D ;D

A little more done on the weekend, Put most of the interior in the car including the floor mats. Put the boot back on and set the boot springs ( what a pain in the a@#$e they were). Primed the engine with oil, i now have oil pressure. And loaded the car on the trailer and took it into town to get the front end alligned today and dropping it off to get the exhaust fitted tomorow.

Hi Everyone,
                Another update,
i have finally got the FC home from the exhaust shop and it looks trik. Due to the exhaust shop not painting the exhaust when finished, i had to when i got it home, so, the last couple of nights i have been taking the exhaust off  and cleaning it and painting it then last night i fitted back up. The hardest part is trying to get to the flange nuts next to the block. I made special flange nuts out of brass that are longer and have a turned down section up close to the flange so that the hex of the nut doesn't hit the flange when it is tightened. Anyway the exhaust looks fantastic, and i hope people have a look when they see the car in the flesh.
Well anyway the weekend is approaching and i hope to fit the booster and bleed up the brakes and clutch, and maybe, just maybe fire a shot out of the old girl.
By the way, the trimmer has my seats and is respringing them and has the headlining pattern and visers, so he will be working on them over the next week or so, so i will be taking the FC back into town soon and getting that fitted along with the screens.
Good Luck to All and bring on thr Nationals
                                                         Scotty

PS: I will get some photos and maybe a video (if i can work it out) up here after the weekend.

Fired the Grey Motor for the first time last night. After making sure i had oil flowing the correct way through the oil filter, i pulled all the plugs out and turned the engine over on the key for a little while to make sure the oil flowed around the engine. Then i replaced the plugs and turned the engine over on the key again so there was compression, then put all the leads back on and hit the key and it fired and idled straight away, no problems at all, i haven't put the timing light on it yet but it sounds like it is very close to where it should be. So another mile stone made. I will get some video of it when i have got the clutch sorted out and can take it for a drive. Man am i looking forward to that.
 Cheers Scotty

Had dramas last night, this clutch is giving me the shits, i just can't seem to get it to work. Can someone shed some light on what i could be doing wrong. I have bled the clutch and it seems to be working. If i push on the clutch pedal the slave cylinder moves the rod, and the fork is moving, but there doesn't seem to be enough resistance and the pedal won't return on it's own. I have racked my brain and can't seem to come up with an answer. The clutch isn't a standard one but it is the one that was on the engine when i got it.
Please can somebody help me, i don't really want to pull the gearbox out.
The car is ready to take for a drive and this is all that is holding me back.

Title: Re: Hayshed FC
Post by: GMH-059 on March 09, 2010, 01:30:31 PM
Scott,
I had a similar problem with my FC.
I had the master cylinder sleeved and rebuilt by Bernie's brakes.
My pedal wouldn't return so I took it back to them.
It ended being that the spring in the master cylinder was put in backwards.
The spring I was told by Bernies is tapered and if assembled in backwards would not allow it to return, once reassembled the pedal returned.

Also isn't there on top of one of the pedals (can't remember if its brake or clutch - haven't access to shop manual at time of writing) an adjustable bracket for adjusting the return spring pressure, this might require adjusting if its on the clutch pedal as the spring could be going over centre and not allowing the pedal to return.

Hope this helps?

Cheers,
Steve.

Thanks very much for your suggestions of the reason for my problem with the clutch. I went back to the book yesterday afternoon and started at the top at the pedal assembly. I set it up as per the book and then went underneath and found that something must be wrong with the fork itself because there seemed to be far too much distance between the slave cylinder and the hole that the pin sits into. When i looked at another engine and gearbox i have at home, the shaft that goes into the fork is not adjusted to the same point as the one on the FC. So i had to bite the bullet and pull the gearbox out and pull the fork out and check it. Once out it was obvious that this is my problem.
As you can see, the two fingers that go onto the thrust bearing and push the thrust bearing against the clutch, are bent and have spread.
So it was as simple as getting another fork off another gearbox and fit it. I had it all back together in a couple of hours and took it for it's first drive in 30 years at about 9pm. I had the 2 kids and myself driving down the drive with the lights on hi beam and no windscreens, with bugs hitting us in the face and me wondering how this floor shifter works. The kids got a real kick out of it. I drove it down to the end of the road and back, dropped the kids off at the house, told them to go to bed (which they didn't) and went back to the shed and set the tappet clearences while the car was hot. Once i did the tappets it ran beautifully with no rattles in the top end.
I plan to take it for a bit more of a drive tonight, bed the new rings in a bit and then it will have a few other bits and pieces done before it goes and has the headlining and proper trim fitted and the windscreens.
 Cheers Scotty

How about this Video.
I am still sorting out the carbies, but i should have them done tonight.
Spoke to the trimmer today and the material for the headlining has come in and he is going to get started on it on Monday. I am dropping the car off on Wednesday and organising for the winscreen guy to fit them on Thursday or Friday, then i should be able to drive it home on Friday.
I am hoping all this works out so i can have some time to sort out any issues, such as, oil leaks, water leaks, etc, before the trip to Orange. Cheers Scotty

Sorry Gary i forgot to mention, the book says to set the inlet valves at .008" and the exhaust at .012", so that is what i did. I will be keeping an eye on them and adjust to suit, but i shouldn't have to, once they are set that should be it.

Sorry to everyone for putting so many posts up, but i know i would be interested if someone else was doing what i am doing, and once this car is done i have been told NO MORE (for a while anyway, thats what i told her). So after this i won't be bothering you all as much with a build that i am doing.

Hi Scott,
Suggest you give Wade Camshafts a call and they can tell you the correct clearance - Ph No 03 - 9568 0333. The cam in our ute has to be set at 13 thou for both inlet & exhaust (can't remember the exact grind). They could also tell you the lift/duration etc.

Thanks Trev,
I have a copy of my cam details that Wade sent me and it says i need to set the valve clearence at .016" for both inlet and exhaust, so i am going home tonight to reset them.

The cam card is the right info to use but I found this article very interesting.

Using Valve Lash to Help Tune Your Engine

Most people do not realize that you can make subtle performance improvements by opening or closing the recommended lash settings.

The intake and exhaust valves cannot move until all the running clearance (valve lash) has been taken up. Therefore, the amount of valve lash you use affects the engine's performance. For example, if you decrease the amount of (hot) valve lash, the valve will open slightly sooner, provide slightly more lift (valve opening), and close later. This makes the camshaft look bigger to the engine, due to this slight increase of duration and lift. If you increase the amount of (hot) lash the opposite occurs. The valve will open later, provide slightly lift less, and close sooner. Now your engine sees a smaller cam with slightly less actual duration and lift.

You can use this tuning method to experiment with what the engine responds to, then keep the setting that works the best. Just remember, the more lash you run, the noisier the valve train will be. If the clearance is excessive it can be harsh or damaging to other valve train components. Therefore, for prolonged running of the engine it is not recommend to increase the amount of lash by more than +0.004" from the recommended setting. Nor is reducing the lash by more than -0.008" recommended.

The common gains that people see will be that by reducing the lash will increase top end (upper RPM power) horsepower, and increasing the lash can improve low end torque and acceleration.

Post by: EffCee on March 12, 2010, 12:18:51 AM
It should be noted that by altering the valve lash, effectively retards or advances the camshaft by a degree or two. If you are seeking more power at either the upper revs or lower revs as described above, it is far better to fit a multi index crankshaft gear and dial the cam in properly in order to obtain the results that are sought.

As mentioned above, excessive clearance causes severe damage to the valve train very quickly, insufficient valve clearance can cause burnt valves and seats

Hi Guys,
i think i will leave the lash as it was given to me by the experts. They have done all the tests over many years so why would i mess with a proven formular.
Last night i set the valve lash to .016" on both inlet and exhaust and also set up the idle mixtures on the carbies. The carbies were set way too rich but that didn't worry me because i needed to bed the new rings in anyway, and to do that you need lots of fuel in the cylinders to wash the bores of oil to stop the glazing from friction. Now that i have set the mixtures the engine runs beautifully and when i took it for another drive it drove great, i can't get too much speed up because i have no windscreens in yet, but it really gets up to speed quickly. Look out, GOA350 might be in for an upgrade  ;D.
All i need to do now is, a few little jobs then wait to get it down to the trimmers. It's ok though, i rather be in this position than trying to get all of this done with only a couple of days to go.
Also it lets me get a bit of work done on the other two cars i am taking.

 By for now Scotty

Scotty

I am sure you could have overcome the windscreen problem and took the helmet out of your FE, I am also sure you would have one for that, and you drive it with the windscreen in ...go figure.

Go for another rap this time with a helmet on...and enjoy

See you at the Nats

Hey Scotty,
You could always wear your leather helmet and goggles.  You'd look just like Dick Dastardly with Georgia alongside as Muttley from the Wacky Races!!  Good to see you're nearly at the end of the tunnel.

Just did small things on the weekend, such as, put springs on carbies, tweaked carbies, trying to stop rocker cover leak, adjusted boot springs, fitted spare wheel and changed over fuel tank sender (thanks Tony). Will get more work done later this week when the car goes to the trimmers for the headlining etc.

Dropped off the FC this morning, to have the headlining fitted and to have the seats repaired, the trimmer tels me that it will be ready to pick up on Friday. Will organise to have the screens fitted on Friday aswell, then pick it up. Unfortunatly the back seat won't be finished by Friday but i will pick that up next week.
I will put some more updated photos up next week.

If the parts are ready on time then pls advise me of this guys contact details.

Had my Prem seats dropped of with a expected completion date of 3 weeks.  5 months later they were done.  >:(

Not an uncommon scenario from auto repolsterers apparently.

Hope this one is true to his word and everything falls into place for you.

Hi everyone,
Went to the trimmers today and took these photos of the headlining, he has done a pretty good job, now he has to finish the seats and she will be done. The windscreen guy can't do it 'til Monday, so i will be picking it up on Monday and dropping it around to the mechanic to do a roadworthy, then i can take it to get plates. So i would say, next week some time i can organise some "shake down" drives to fine tune the driving side of the car and then i would like to take it to the guy that i got it off and show him the FC back on the road after 31 years.

Also Hr Premier, this guy assures me, he will have it ready for me and so far so good he has been true to his word. It has been the windscreen guy who has delayed things more than the trimmer.

Cheers Scotty

Don't want to tell you what to do Scotty but have you thought of painting the areas under the windscreen rubber with some primer or killrust to stop the rust in the future, It's a bit hard to get to once the windscreen is in.

 Hi everyone,
Just letting you all know that the FC passed the roadworthy with flying colours and will be registered in the coming days, ready for the week end at the Jindera swap meet. Looking forward to going for a few decent drives to get a feel for the car.

Just on what i started with. Maybe i need to put a photo of the FC, before i started, on the dash board so that people who haven't had the pleasure of keeping up with the rebuild, can appreciate the work that goes into getting one of these cars on the road.
To all those that have rebuilt your cars from the shell up, you need to be commended. I have only built this one in the running gear and rust repair department, and it has cost me a fair bit in $$ and time. I can only imagine what it would cost if I had the body straightened and repainted aswell.
If someone can go out and buy me a FC or FE for under $10k with all the things that i have done to this FC, then i would like to see it, and i bet there are alot of hidden secrets that the seller won't tell you.
It always amazes me that these cars don't get the price tag that a similar era Chev or Ford get. There is just as much cost and time involved to do all of these cars, but for some reason ours are about $10k behind, go figure. Sorry for venting, it just gets my goat.
Maybe one day our investments will be acknowleged for what they are worth.

Cheers Scotty

Congratulations on the car passing rego Scotty, Well done

As for the value, they aren't making any more of them, there are alot of them that are being pulled apart still and the owners are deciding that they are too far gone. As such they are getting fewer, you only have to go through the for sale posts to see owners that have started then abandoned the projects over the years, most abandoned projects are sold cheaply and wind up being used as parts

I think in time to come, and not too far off, we will see the price of our cars increase, not subsantially, but continue to rise

My 2 cents

Keith

Hi Everyone,
The FC is registered now, i got my Plates a couple of days ago,it's on club rego, so i am off to Pedders next week for them to have a check over it to make sure the front end is still where it should be, and to clock some test miles up before i drop the oil and water and put some fresh stuff in ready for the treck to Orange. I also hope to take the FC to the guy who gave it to me and show him that it lives again.
 See you all in Orange,

Hi Everyone,

Took the FC for some much needed k's and clocked up about 300 of them yesterday. Got her home and dropped the oil and put the detergent oil in and a new oil filter, then dumped the water out of the radiator to check the filter in the line and to put some fresh water in. It was the best thing i could have done. When i built this engine i spent alot of time scraping the water areas out and flushing them around the cylinders, while i had all the welsh plugs out, then i put a new water pump on and a new radiator. So when i put it all together i always put a piece of stocking in the top hose to filter the water before it returns into the radiator. After doing all of that cleaning and putting new parts in you would think that there would be no crap in the water system wouldn't you,     WRONG , after dropping the water i pulled my piece of stocking out and low and behold, there is bits of scale and sealant in there. It isn't stopping the water from circulating, but it could have blocked a tube in the radiator and made the radiator less efficient.
I was always told that the 2 main weaknesses in a Grey Motor was the Crank shaft and oil system, and the cooling system, ie heads used to crack. So if you can improve these 2 areas then you should have a more reliable engine.

Anyway, back to taking the FC out for the day. After i left the Swap Meet i headed home, criusing along with my son in with me. I got home and rang the guy that gave me the car to see if he was going to be home if i came around, mind yuo he lives about 1 hour away.
I spoke to his wife and she said he was at the golf course and you could catch up with him there. Anyway, i headed off to the golf course and waited for him to finish his round then took him to show him the FC. He was there with his son aswell, so i showed him all the work that i had done and how it had come up. Then i said that i will take him for a drive, so there was the 4 of us in the FC, and off we went. I drove for a little while then pulled up on the side of the road and offered for him to have a drfive, which he accepted. So he hopped into the FC's drivers seat and looked at the dash, grabbed the wheel, then this HUGE smile came up on his face, all the while he is explaining to his son, who is about 12, all the things they used to do in this car when they were kids. Anyway, he proceeded to put it into gear and take off, still with this smile on his face, then out on the open road and through the gears, here he was criusing down the road in the car that his parents used to pick him up from school in and take him on holidays in towing a caravan, then he said " Well i thought i would never see the day that i would drive this car ".
We got the FC back to the Golf Course and talked some more then shook hands and away i went.
It made me immensly proud that i could show this bloke a part of his child hood and let him remeniss a bit about his past and give him a father and son moment that i am sure he will cherish for ever. No amount of money can buy that but it does make it happen. These are the reasons we are into this hobby and if you haven't experienced this before, try it, it is very rewarding.
Cheers Scotty

Hi everyone,
Well i made it back from Orange safely and with no dramas and this is the first opportunity i have had to put anything on the forum.
I took the Hayshed FC to Wangaratta for the swap meet and the show "n" shine. It was a sensational day, but not too many bargains. I was waiting for the raffle to be drawn and they were doing the presentations before hand, anyway, i was sitting in the shade minding my own business, when i heard my name read out for something. So i got up and started walking over to the guy with the microphone, and he informed me that i had won the Encouragment award for the Hayshed FC. Obviously the judges thought that the FC is a work in progress. After recieving a couple of nice looking bottles of wine, i informed him that the FC is finished and that that is the way i want to keep it.

Anyway it was nice to get something,

Thanks to Lester and Chris Hilli for the warm company, and the Early Holden club of Wangaratta and the Lions Club for the Event.
                                                    Cheers Scotty
